Amex Rose Gold Annual Fee

Don't Miss

Dining Credit: Up To $120 Value Per Year

NEW American Express Rose Gold Card | Is It Worth The Annual Fee

I order takeout from Grubhub or Seamless once per month, so I’m always looking for promotions that can offset the cost.

That’s why one of my favorite perks is the yearly $120 dining credit that can offset purchases made with Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar and select Shake Shack locations. . If I’m especially savvy, I can get my monthly order for only a couple of dollars.

This perk is automatic, and you can expect the credit to automatically appear on your account two to four weeks after an eligible purchase. From my past experience, it’s often within a week.

American Express Gold Card Review

Opinions, reviews, analyses & recommendations are the authors alone, and have not been reviewed, endorsed or approved by any of these entities.

In September of 2019, I leaped into the world of premium rewards cards when I applied for the American Express Platinum card. During the following months, I continually looked at the American Express Gold card as a potential companion to my newly-acquired card, but eventually disabused myself of that idea because I wasnt sure that Id be able to make full use of its perks. Cut to this past fall and an enhanced welcome bonus along with new benefits on the Gold card got me to change my tune. On top of that, Amex recently reintroduced the Rose Gold card option, further bringing attention to this coveted card.

So what does the Amex Gold card have to offer and how has it benefited my wallet over these past few months? Lets take a closer look at the American Express Gold and Rose Gold card:

The American Express Platinum Card

The Platinum Amex card offers members five points for every dollar spent on flights booked directly through airlines or through the American Express travel site, five points for prepaid hotels booked through amextravel.com, and one point for every dollar spent on other purchases.

The Platinum welcome bonus as of February 2021 gives cardholders 75,000 points when they spend $5,000 or more in the first six months of account membership. This is the equivalent of $855 for flights booked through the Amex travel website. However, if you decide to add up to three additional cards on your Platinum account, expect to pay an extra annual fee of $175. Each card after that will be billed a $175 annual fee, as well.

The Platinum card is great for people who love to travel. There are obviously many more perks that come with the Platinum card than with the Gold, especially when you consider the higher annual fee. Rewards can be used for merchandise, gift cards, dining, shopping, entertainment, or for use at the Amex travel website. Points can also be transferred to other frequent flyer programs.

The Platinum card offers Uber ride credits in the United States, giving cardholders a maximum of $15 in credits each month. The card also comes with an annual $200 incidental airline fee credit on the eligible airline of your choice, giving passengers complimentary checked baggage and an in-flight meal with qualifying airlines.

Drawbacks To This Card

  • Annual fee: The perks and bonus points of this card don’t come without a cost. You’ll pay an annual fee of $250.
  • No lounge benefits: While this card has great earning potential when it comes to travel purchases, it does not feature some of the luxury perk of other travel . If that’s important to you, then you might want to look into The Platinum Card® from American Express. You can start by exploring the differences between the Amex Gold vs. Platinum cards.

Some say that the Platinum card is simply a dressed up Gold card. The Gold card will cost you a $250 annual membership fee. While the Platinum account charges no interest because balances must be paid in full each month, the Gold card offers the option of carrying a balance on certain purchases over $100 with interest. The Gold card also offers a bunch of benefits similar to those from the Platinum card, although at reduced levels.

Other Cards To Consider

If the benefits of the American Express Gold Card dont offset the annual fee in your eyes, a card with comparable rewards and a lower annual fee may be a smarter choice.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a generous sign-up bonus that can help kickstart your travel plans and is an excellent option if you like to travel and dine out. The Sapphire Preferred offers many similar benefits to the Amex Gold, including travel insurance coverage and DoorDash benefits, but with a much lower annual fee of $95. Seeing how the Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold rewards stack up next to each other can help you decide which card offers the greater value.

If you’re more interested in travel benefits, then The Platinum Card® from American Express would be a better fit. With this card you’ll get lounge access, a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee credit, elite status with and Hilton Honors, and much much more.

The American Express Gold Card

The Gold card comes with an annual fee of $250, and there is no annual fee for adding any additional cards to a Gold account. One of the biggest perks for any cardholder is the membership rewards program, which allows consumers to earn points as they use their credit cards.

The Gold card is geared toward people who are big shoppers, eat out a lot, and do a lot of everyday spending. American Express Gold cardholders can earn four points for every dollar spent at U.S. restaurants and U.S. supermarkets , three points for every dollar spent booking flights with airline companies or through the American Express travel website, and one point for every dollar spent on any other purchase.

As of February 2021, first-time cardholders are also eligible for 60,000 points after you use your card to make $4,000 in purchases for the first six months of account membership.

Unlike traditional credit cards, American Express cards do not have a regular APR or charge interest, as all balances must be paid in full each month. However, the Gold card does offer cardmembers the flexibility to pay for purchases of $100 or more over time at a set interest rate.

With the Amex Gold, you are eligible for up to $10 in monthly statement credits when you use card at participating dining partners.

These partners include at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar and select Shake Shack locations. This statement credit functions similarly to the up-to-$50 Saks credit on the Platinum Card® from American Express in that it isnt allotted all at once, but instead is spread out across the year in monthly installments.

You need to enroll your card for this perk on the Amex site under “benefits,” so do that as soon as you get your new card.

People Who Are Over 5/24 With Chase

Whether you have years of established credit or are new to the points world entirely, at TPG we almost universally recommend that you start by applying for Chase credit cards because of the pesky 5/24 rule. Simply put, this rule means that you will be automatically rejected for most Chase cards if youve opened five or more credit cards in the last 24 months.

The question of what you should do after youve maxed out your five slots with Chase gets a little trickier, but the Amex Gold could be a great answer. Not only will you immediately begin earning a valuable transferable points currency, but the bonus categories also will help you earn your next award flight or hotel stay that much faster.

Does The Amex Gold Card Get You Access To Airport Lounges

Unfortunately, no. While the American Express Gold Card comes with a variety of travel benefits, you would need The Platinum Card® from American Express in order to gain complimentary access to American Express lounge networks. If you’re open to getting a card from a different credit card issuer, then the Chase Sapphire Reserve® will offer you a ton of luxury travel benefits that more than compensate for the card’s annual fee.

The Amex Gold is part of the Amex trifecta and pairs well with the Amex Platinum. You can compare the Amex trifecta vs. Chase trifecta rewards side-by-side to see which card combination gets you your preferred travel benefits.

Amex Gold Bonus Categories: Food

The bonus categories for the Gold card include 4x on restaurants worldwide, which is even better than the 3x points on dining with Chase Sapphire Reserve.

The Gold card also offers 4x points on US supermarkets up to $25,000 per year. This could be worth 100,000 Amex MR points if you spend a lot on groceries!

If you value Amex MR points at 2 cents or greater, this is an even better return on supermarket spending than the Amex Blue Cash Preferred with 6% cash back on US supermarkets .

US military Commissaries overseas are eligible for the 4x points on US supermarkets. If you’re stationed in Japan, South Korea, Germany, England, Spain, Italy, or Bahrain, you can use this card on base at the Commissary.

The no foreign transaction fees on this card make it perfect for OCONUS TDY, PCS, and deployments. If you like to travel internationally on vacation, you need this card in your wallet.

This card is an excellent compliment to the Amex Platinum card. The Gold card earns more points on restaurants and US supermarkets than the Platinum card. I compared the Amex Gold vs Amex Platinum to see which is better for military servicemembers.

The Platinum card earns 5x on airfare, vs the Gold card’s 3x points on airfare booked directly with the airline or on amextrael.com. Therefore, use your Platinum card for airfare and your Gold card for groceries and dining out!

People Looking To Complete The Amex Trifecta

The two biggest weak spots in the Amex Gold’s bonus categories can be easily fixed by pairing it with two other strong Amex cards: The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express.

No matter how much money you spend on dining and groceries a year, youll likely want to combine multiple cards into the Amex trifecta to maximize your bonus category earning.

If you combine these three cards and use each one for its bonus categories, youll end up earning anywhere from 25 points per dollar, or 410% back, on nearly all of your purchases. And these cards really fit together like puzzle pieces, with the Amex Platinum providing luxury perks, such as lounge access and hotel elite status, that the Amex Gold doesnt, and the Blue Business Plus elevating your base earning rate on non-bonus spending from 1 point to 2 points per dollar without costing you a penny in annual fees .

How Does The Amex Gold Card Compare To Other Rewards Cards

Amex Rose Gold Card Review & Benefits

While the Amex Gold card offers one of the best rewards rates on both restaurant and U.S. supermarket purchases, its high annual fee can make it difficult to recoup the cards value with rewards earnings. Plus, while it comes with a few valuable credits, its dining credit has some restrictive requirements that could make it harder to maximize.

To get a sense of where the Amex Gold stands in todays marketplace, our team of researched hundreds of credit cards to rank the Amex Gold based on factors like its rewards rate, welcome bonus, annual fee and more. The card fared quite well because of its rewards rate, welcome bonus and annual bonus . It does charge a higher annual fee than the average rewards card, however.

Though the Amex Gold can easily pay for itself if you take advantage of its benefits, if you arent sure how many of the cards perks youll use and worry about a high annual fee coming back to bite you, there are a few other rewards cards that offer great rewards rates and charge a lower annual fee. Plus, since the cards rewards are best used for travel transfers, it may not be the best fit if youre looking for maximum flexibility.

Consider these alternatives:

  • Points are worth 25%-50% more if you pair with a higher-tier Chase travel card
