Golden Globes Clouded With Controversy
The Golden Globes have traditionally been second in importance only to the Oscars in Hollywood’s film awards season, but their credibility has been thrown into question — and their future plunged into doubt.
Event organisers the HFPA has been accused of racism, sexism, bullying and corruption.
More than 100 entertainment writers make up the HFPA, but a Los Angeles Times investigation last year found the organisation at the time did not have a single Black member.
HFPA president Helen Hoehne said it had been a time of change and reflection for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
“For eight months we’ve worked tirelessly as an organisation to be better,” Ms Hoehne said at the nomination 2022 ceremony.
“We also have 21 new members, the largest and most diverse in our 79-year-old history.
The 21 new members include six black journalists.
At the same time, a chief diversity officer has been added, and America’s National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People has been brought in on a five-year partnership.
Nonetheless, many publicists and studios refused to participate in this year’s edition, and A-listers publicly distanced themselves from the embattled group.

The films Belfast and The Power of the Dog dominated the Golden Globe nominations, with seven each.

As outlined in The Times investigation, the HFPA is facing renewed scrutiny over its 87-person membership and fresh allegations of self-dealing and ethical lapses. Our report found that the organization has no Black members, which partially explains the puzzling nominations each year and the oversights in this years crop of nominees.
