Are Dollar Coins Rare

The 1804 dollar is one of the rarest and most famous coins in the world. Its creation was the result of a simple bookkeeping error, but its status as a highly prized rarity has been established for nearly a century and a half. The silver dollars reported by the mint as being struck in 1804 were actually dated 1803.

What Are The Coin Dealer’s Ethics

RARE** vintage 1979 P Susan B Anthony One dollar coin ...

There is nothing more disheartening than standing at a dealer’s table at a coin show and watching a little old lady approach the dealer with a jar of old U.S. coins, and have the dealer barely glance at them and say, “I’ll give you 10% over face value. That’s all they’re worth, and I’m being generous.”

A coin dealer such as this isn’t just lazy he’s hoping to make a score. He’s hoping that there’ll be something in that jar that will spell a big payday for himself. But even if we give him the benefit of the doubt, and attribute his action to laziness, is he being fair with his customer? She was trusting his expertise. Would you like to do business with someone who treats his customers that way?

Additionally, using high-pressure tactics in order to close a deal is just as disturbing. Both parties should come away from a deal with a feeling of fairness. If pressuring a customer to close on a deal is their way of business, you will want to avoid this coin dealer.

Coin dealers who subscribe to a code of ethical standards, such as that espoused by the PNG, have enough respect for their customers to take that extra 2 or 3 minutes to look through the little old lady’s jar and give her an honest appraisal. They agree to represent their merchandise fairly, grade coins honestly, and treat people ethically. These sound like traits you should expect anyway, right? Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, so think about this before choosing a coin dealer to do business with.

Government Reports & Resources

Jack Weatherford, an anthropologist who wrote the 1998 book The History of Money, says he loves coins, but he doesn’t love the billion dollar coins piled up in the nation’s coin vaults.

“Destroy them,” he said. “People will not accept these coins. Nobody in America wants to use them. As long as they have a paper currency, they will use that.”

Of using coins to save money, Weatherford says that in an era of electronic financial transactions, “the argument is about 50 years too late. Coins have rapidly become less and less important in our society â like paper money itself is becoming less and less important.”

Buyers Remorse For Bills Proponents

Delaware’s Castle, who left Congress after a primary loss and now practices law, acknowledges that the demand for golden dollars didn’t materialize as he had hoped.

Castle says he and others knew when they were passing the bill that widespread adoption of dollar coins would be hindered by the continuing production of dollar bills. But he says that mandating a wholesale switch from bills to coins was politically untenable then, as it is now.

“It’s not quite like cutting somebody’s Social Security,” Castle says, “but politically it’s not something the members want to deal with, so it’s just very hard to get something like that done.”

Castle says the coins should continue to be produced, but in smaller numbers.

Value Of Sacagawea Dollars

Sacagawea gold dollar coins were minted first from 2000 until 2008 and again with different reverse designs starting in 2009. These are popular coins but well over a billion have been minted since 2000. There are a couple of special varieties that are collectible like the 2000-P Cheerios coin. However, your regular strike Sacagawea coins are still just worth $1 and will likely only be worth a dollar for the foreseeable future. A moderate exception would be that some of the older rolls do sell for a very small premium over their face value. All Sacagawea coins, while gold in color, have absolutely no precious metals value. They are made of copper, manganese, brass, zinc, and nickel. Despite their limited collector value, Sacagaweas are still a fun coin with a lot of history.

Our guide at the bottom of this page lists the mintage figures and historical information about all the various Sacagawea coins from different years. Here are some quick facts that collectors might find of interest:

Notable Old Gold Coins

Year: Dating back to 1795

Origin: The U.S.

The Story: Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins are unique in that they survived the legislation under President Roosevelt, who banned anyone from obtaining and keeping monetary gold. Roosevelt had ordered that anyone holding gold coins send them back to the treasury and, as a result, few survived in circulation. Any remaining gold coins dating back to 1975 are now considered incredibly rare.

Particularly rare and valuable gold coins from this time include:

  • Gold Quarter Eagle
  • Gold Half Eagle
  • Saint-Gaudens Gold

Value: The value of a pre-1933 U.S. gold coin depends on its denomination, as the percentage of gold in each coin is proportional to its face value. For example, a 2.50 quarter eagle is made of half the amount of fine gold as a $5 gold half eagle.

The Brasher Doubloon

Year: 1787

Origin: U.S.

The Story: The Brasher Doubledoons name comes from its creator, Ephraim Basher. Basher, a goldsmith, and silversmith in New York City, made the coin in the late 18th century, probably unassuming of its impending value. The coins front features a rising sun with the state seal, the reverse showing an American eagle with a shield. The coin on its own is particularly rare, but different versions with varying characteristics exist that hold even more value.

The Umayyad Gold Dinar

Year: 723

Origin: Islamic Spain to Central Asia

The Edward III Florin

Year: 1343

Origin: The U.K

Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

Year: 2007

Origin: Canada

Old Gold Coins We Look For

Is It Worth Holding On To The New Gold Dollar Coins

Jack W. asks: Is it worth holding on to the new gold dollar coins? If it is, are there certain ones I should be looking for, such as markings etc. Thank you.

The Sacagawea, Native American and Presidential dollars should be.spent. The numbers minted are vast. Collectors in the future will look to purchase gem condition examples. You wont find ones in that lofty condition in the wild but you can buy Mint and proof sets from the U.S. Mint . For regular issues, those are the ones to save.

Some lucky people have found errors, including a rare mule error . Those have turned out to be a financial boon to the finder.

Note that there is no gold in the golden dollars. It is an alloy of copper-nickel with a bit of manganese to temporarily give it a gold color. An unprotected coin soon oxidizes to a chocolate brown.

Design Of Type 2 And 3 Dollars

The Type 2 and 3 gold dollars depict Liberty as a Native American princess, with a fanciful feathered headdress not resembling any worn by any Indian tribe. This image is an inexact copy of the design Longacre had made for the three-dollar piece, and is one of a number of versions of Liberty that Longacre created based on the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture then on display in a Philadelphia museum. For the reverse, Longacre adapted the “agricultural wreath” he had created for the reverse of the three-dollar piece, composed of cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat, blending the produce of North and South. This wreath would appear, later in the 1850s, on the Flying Eagle cent.

Art historian Cornelius Vermeule deprecated the Indian princess design used by Longacre for the obverses of the Types 2 and 3 gold dollar, and for the three-dollar piece, “the ‘princess’ of the gold coins is a banknote engraver’s elegant version of folk art of the 1850s. The plumes or feathers are more like the crest of the Prince of Wales than anything that saw the Western frontiers, save perhaps on a music hall beauty.”

Do You Have Any Recourse If You Get Ripped Off

Coin dealers who are full members of the PNG have agreed to submit to binding arbitration to resolve disputes. This agreement is a critical consideration if you are buying expensive coins or coins for investment purposes. What happens if there’s a dispute? Why not avoid that possible situation, and do business with coin dealers from whom you have some recourse.

Reception Of The Presidential Dollar Coins

The Presidential dollar coins were originally produced and intended for widespread circulation and were heavily promoted by the U.S. Mint and the numismatic community at-large. However, the Presidential dollars failed to gain much traction in standard commerce channels for much the same reason other recent attempts at circulating dollar coinage have flopped the dollar bill concurrently circulated.

With more than $1.4 billion Presidential dollars sitting in Federal Reserve vaults as surplus, the U.S. government suspended production of the dollar coin for circulation. However, the U.S. Mint is still producing Presidential dollars for numismatic distribution in coin sets.

Are They Illegal To Own

Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States Code titled “Mutilation, diminution, and falsification of coins” covers the legality of plating and colorized coins. This law provides criminal penalties for “Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States.” The statute continues to focus on the intent of the individual must be fraudulent. In other words, if you transform or change the appearance of a United States coin and disclosed to the buyer when you sell it as a modified or altered coin, you are not trying to deceive or defraud anybody. However, if these marketers tried to sell these as “solid gold” coins when in fact they are only plated, that would be a violation of the law because they are trying to defraud you.

Even though plating coins is not illegal, the United States Mint does not actively endorse plating, colorizing, engraving, or performing any other modifications to coins. The mint has in the past sold coins mounted on spoons, Christmas ornaments, or jewelry. The key difference here is that the coins are unaltered and are not being sold with the intent of defrauding the public.

The Material Of The Coin: Gold Or Silver

4 golden dollars collection

Old coin values are also dependent on material, as some old coins are more valuable than others because of what they are made of. Many coins minted before the Great Depression were made using silver and gold.

Naturally, these are worth a lot more than the ones that came after them that were made of copper, bronze, and steel. This is why the value of old coins before 1965 are so high. After 1968, no silver coins were produced.

The value of silver and gold has increased in the last 150 years, changing gold and silver coins value, rippling into the value of coinage that was minted in these precious metals. A striking example would be the 1794 silver dollar, which sold for more than US $10 million at auction in 2013.

Consider the most notable old gold, silver and even copper coins that hold substantial value because of their combined material, rarity, and history.
