Visiting The Golden Gate Bridge

Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge

Over 10 million people visit the Golden Gate Bridge every year. It has to be one of the world’s most beautiful sights even for locals, the sight of it never gets old.

The complementary colors of the red-orange bridge and the brown, rocky hills, the blue water and sky, and the graceful sweep across the straight is spectacular.

Stop : Earthquake Testing And Retrofitting

As many people know, San Francisco has suffered through many major earthquakes in its history.

The largest of these was the 1906 earthquake, which was estimated to be a 7.8 on the Richter scale

Since 1906, the city has experienced numerous other strong earthquakes.

Because of the danger that earthquakes pose, we have to know to a high degree of certainty that the Golden Gate Bridge will survive a strong earthquake.

As part of the design process during the creation of the bridge, scientists put models of the bridge under severe stress to figure out which parts of the bridge would cause trouble.

As you can see from this large beam that is bent in the middle, the researchers discovered one possible fault in the bridge.

They fixed it before the bridge was ever built, but they kept this bent beam for visitors to see.

Walk back under the bridge, and walk up the hill towards the right. At the top of the hill, youll see a set of stairs with a large flagpole at the top. Walk up to the area with the flag.

Ride A Bike To The Bridge

There are a number of excellent bike paths in the area near the bridge on the SF side this is a popular biking spot for both locals and visitors.

Bike rentals: There are no bike rental offices near the bridge, but you can rent bikes at several places near Fisherman’s Wharf and on Lombard Street en route to the bridge. From there, it’s a relatively easy, and very scenic, ride to the bridge. Fun for kids, too, and mostly flat.

See my tips on where to rent the bikes, plus information on biking across the bridge and taking the ferry back. There are some good deals available for both renting bikes and taking bike tours over the bridge.

What Holds Up The Golden Gate Bridge

It’s a simple concept: Two cables anchored on either side of the 1-mile wide Golden Strait are held aloft by two steel towers. That’s it: only two cables, each 36-3/8 inches in diameter. Here’s a photo of a cross section of cable displayed at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center* on the San Francisco side.

Where To Park To Walk Across The Golden Gate Bridge

Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco, CA

Having a car makes it nice to not have to plan a tour bus or use public transportation, but it makes finding parking in the city sometimes tricky. With that in mind, there are two parking areas. The visitor center parking lot on the city side does not have a lot of parking but if you can find it, take it. This is where the buses drop people off for walks and photo ops, so it gets pretty crowded. There is a nice gift shop where I picked up an orange rivet photo stand for a photo I took of the kids. If the weather is where you cant even see the bridge, they have a fun photo op inside. Be sure to check it out.

If you cannot find parking here you can drive across the bridge to the Vista Point and look for parking there. This is a great photo opportunity to get the city view and the bridge. Realize that if you drive across the bridge and cant find parking you will have to pay the toll to come back across.

Four Other San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge Tours

In addition to the popular biking tours, you will also find a variety of other types of San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge tours. Here are four of my favorites.

    1. Hop On/Hop Off Bus Tour: The Hop On/Hop Off Bus includes around 20 stops throughout the city. You can get off and back on at any stop along the way. You can also spend as much time as you want at each stop.

This open top bus will take you over the bridge to Vista Point on the north side. You can either hop out or just admire the bridge from the bus. It runs daily and is a great way to see the bridge as well as many of our top attractions. Find out more and check for tickets on the Big Bus Tours site.

    2. Fire Engine Tour: On this expedition, you will enjoy some time on a big red shiny Mack Fire Engine. This open-air tour starts at The Cannery in Fisherman’s Wharf.

You will ride through the Presidio, drive over the bridge, and then make your way into Sausalito. On the way back, you will stop at the Fort Baker lookout point.

Here you will get some amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco skyline, and Alcatraz. After this stop, you will drive back over the bridge.

This tour includes access to authentic firefighter gear so you can stay warm on those chilly San Francisco days. It’s about a 90-minute tour and is offered a couple of times a day. Find out more and check for ticket availability on Viator.

    How To Extend This Walk

Of course, there are plenty of ways to vary this up and extend your walk.

For example, you could continue on into the Marin Headlands or into Sausalito, for example, or down to Fort Baker.

Another popular option would be to go up to Battery Spencer, which is an additional 15 minutes walk up Conzelman Road. Its up a hill that involves about 200 feet of elevation gain, but the views are really worth it!

Taking A Golden Gate Bridge Tour

You can also explore more of the bridge by taking a tour. You can go on the bridge on a bike tour which takes you into Sausalito and then back to SF on the ferry. You can go under the bridge with a sunset cruise . Or you can soar high above the bridge in a private helicopter tour.

However you do it, be sure to enjoy your bridge walk and make sure your phone has a lot of battery juice, because you are going to want to take a lot of pictures. Have fun and happy trails!

Three Suggested Walks On The Golden Gate Bridge

    Kara

Insiders Tip: Always dress in layers so you can get warm or cool off when the Golden Gate Bridge weather changes and those changes are common.

Insiders Tip: During the warm months from April to October the closest parking lots to the Golden Gate Bridge get very crowded and there can be long delays in finding parking. If you take Muni, Golden Gate Transit, Uber, Lyft or a taxi there and back you can save a lot of time that you can then spend appreciating the beautiful views. Hop-on hop-off tour buses allow you to set your own pace, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge as far as you want and to stay here as long as you like during daylight hours.

Four Cool Routes For The Bridge Walk

When most people think of walking the Golden Gate Bridge, they are just thinking of the pedestrian walkway on the bridge itself. But if you are up for doing some additional mileage, you can take a hike to the bridge from one of several connecting pathways. These extended routes gives you more opportunity to see the bay, the Pacific and the bridge itself from different angles.

    Why Are Bridges So Strong

Suspension bridges are strong because the force on the bridge gets spread out. The weight of the cars or trains or horses, whatever’s traveling across it, pulls on the cables, creating tension. Those cables then pull down on the towers and also pull on the anchors on either end of the bridge, to hold up the deck.

    Golden Gate Bridge History

The Golden Gate Bridge history starts in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Joseph Strauss wanted the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge built to connect Marin County with the city.

Many thought he was crazy and that building a structure in that location was impossible. However, Strauss received enough support and a bond was issued.

His team and he received nearly $35 million dollars to build it. They were also told to complete it in four years. It ended up coming in under budget and earlier than originally scheduled.

The San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge officially opened to cars on May 28, 1937. It opened to pedestrians just one day earlier.

Remember Youre There To Have A Good Time

Life is short, and walking the Golden Gate Bridge is something everyone should do at least once. Feeling the briny air in your hair while gliding hundreds of feet above the churning ocean is exhilarating. Even bad weather has its charms up there: a howling wind blocks out the incessant traffic a visit from Karl cloaks the endeavor in a mystery that approaches pure fantasy. The walk itself can be stressful if you let the questionable choices of your fellow crossers get to you, but just remember youre there to have a good time, and everything else will work itself out.
