Which Is Better The Amex Gold Or The Amex Platinum
The better card between the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum is the one that best suits your lifestyle and spending habits. Though both cards come from the same credit card issuer and have some similarities, there are important differences between them. For example, both cards earn valuable Amex Membership Rewards points, but the Amex Gold is more suited for earning on dining and grocery purchases while the Amex Platinum is geared toward travel spending.
This is made even more clear with each cards benefits. The Amex Gold offers up to $120 in dining credit each year, while the Amex Platinum offers up to $100 in fee reimbursement for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, complimentary airport lounge access, free elite hotel status with and Hilton Honors, and more. Select benefits require enrollment.
Who Should Consider The American Express The Platinum Card
The Platinum Card from American Express is a great option for frequent travelers that want luxury benefits and generous rewards. Cardholders get complimentary travel insurance, no foreign transaction fees, access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, concierge services and more.
You can transfer points to partner airlines through their frequent flier programs.
You get complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status and Hilton Honors Gold Status.
You can earn 5x points directly on airline purchases and prepaid hotels and flights booked through American Express Travel, up to $500,000 per year.
Both of these cards are solid options for consumers that spend generously, and want significant rewards. However, the divider between the two cards is the lifestyle of the cardholder. If you are a regular traveler, meaning more than once a quarter, you may find the Platinum Card worth it. If you travel a few times per year and enjoy eating out, the Gold Card will get the job done. While The Platinum Card is packed with benefits, the $695 annual fee is a steep ask. So if you decide the Platinum Card is your best choice, be sure to have a plan to utilize the benefits.

Earning Points With The Amex Green Gold Or Platinum
All three of these American Express cards earn Membership Rewards points, which can be redeemed in many different ways. But by far, the most lucrative redemption option for them is travel, and with many partnership opportunities, Membership Rewards points can help you visit friends and family around the world or even take an outrageously expensive once-in-a-lifetime trip for very little cost.
Surprisingly, even though the Amex Platinum is the most expensive card of the three, it actually earns the fewest points on your everyday purchases. Other than earning 5 points for every dollar you spend on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel, as well as flights booked with Amex Travel or directly with an airline, youll only earn 1 point per dollar on everything else.
On the other hand, the Amex Green earns 3 points per dollar on all travel purchases, which includes all hotels and flights regardless of how theyre booked, along with rental cars, cruises and many other travel-related purchases. Youll also earn 3 points per dollar on restaurants including takeout and delivery and transit. Then, on all other purchases, youll earn 1 point per dollar spent.
For those looking for a card to maximize their food-related purchases while travel is at an ebb due to the pandemic, the mid-tier Amex Gold card is a perfect fit. Youll earn 4 points per dollar at restaurants and 4 points per dollar at US supermarkets, up to $25,000 per year in purchases .
Delta Skymiles Platinum American Express Card Vs Delta Skymiles Reserve American Express Card
When comparing the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card vs Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, its important to note that the differences between these cards are much more minor than between the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card cards. That said, we believe that, most of the time, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card will still give you the most bang for your buck.

The Platinum Card From American Express And The American Express Gold Card Are Two Of Our Favorite Cards Because They Both Offer Valuable Rewards
While one card offers more rewards for everyday purchases like restaurants and groceries, the other card features travel and lifestyle perks potentially making them both great options to add to your wallet.
But which card is better? Lets take a closer look to see if we can figure out which card is best for your needs.
The Vacationers Final Thoughts
These two cards contend to be the best American Express credit card for earning travel rewards. You can earn an above-average number of points on travel purchases and redeem your points for award flights.
However, each card serves a different customer base.
The Platinum Card from American Express offers a crazy amount of luxury travel benefits that other premium credit cards cant hold a candle to. However, these perks wont be worth the $695 annual if you dont fly often or patronize the brands offering the statement credits.
On the other hand, the American Express Gold Card is a snazzy semi-premium travel credit card. While you sacrifice several air travel benefits, you can make up the difference each week when its your go-to card for grocery and dining purchases.
Once you decide which card has the most relevant travel and shopping benefits for your circumstances, its time to apply.

The American Express Platinum Card
The Platinum Amex card offers members five points for every dollar spent on flights booked directly through airlines or through the American Express travel site, five points for prepaid hotels booked through amextravel.com, and one point for every dollar spent on other purchases.
The Platinum welcome bonus as of February 2021 gives cardholders 75,000 points when they spend $5,000 or more in the first six months of account membership. This is the equivalent of $855 for flights booked through the Amex travel website. However, if you decide to add up to three additional cards on your Platinum account, expect to pay an extra annual fee of $175. Each card after that will be billed a $175 annual fee, as well.
The Platinum card is great for people who love to travel. There are obviously many more perks that come with the Platinum card than with the Gold, especially when you consider the higher annual fee. Rewards can be used for merchandise, gift cards, dining, shopping, entertainment, or for use at the Amex travel website. Points can also be transferred to other frequent flyer programs.
The Platinum card offers Uber ride credits in the United States, giving cardholders a maximum of $15 in credits each month. The card also comes with an annual $200 incidental airline fee credit on the eligible airline of your choice, giving passengers complimentary checked baggage and an in-flight meal with qualifying airlines.

With 4x Membership Rewards points on dining at restaurants, 4x points at U.S. supermarkets and 3x points on flights booked directly with the airline, you are able to rack up some serious points over the course of a year.

Many of those who already have The Platinum Card® from American Express may be eyeing those bonus categories as a great complement to whats already their wallet.
As TPG contributor Ethan Steinberg explained here, you can pair three Amex cards to really maximize your rewards on just about every bonus category and everyday, non-bonus spending. But to specifically address the issue at hand, is it logical to hold both the Gold card and the Platinum card, especially with their serious annual fees? While that partially depends on your travel habits and spending patterns, there is one case where it can definitely make sense: if you can maximize the credits for each card.
