Our Cost Exposure Due To Gold Cost In Plating Of Watches

Q. We are a direct mail order company who sources watches from China. What we would like assistance with is understanding a number of things:#1 is if our specs are adhered to which is a 1 micron thick plating of 18k gold how much impact to our cost is every $25 USD movement in gold?At $1850 USD gold, we believe the cost of 24k gold should be just a fraction under .06 cents. so, 18k gold would be approx 75 % of .06 cents/mg.What we are not sure of is how to calculate the area of the case/band & clasp to calculate the total dm2 to then be able to convert to mg and then calculate what our cost would be at different gold prices. We have asked our supplier these questions and are not getting a reply that is logical or makes us comfortable. You might say that we may be shopping for a new supplier at the same time.#2. what is the most cost affective way to confirm that your specifications of gold plating are being met? Our current method is quite cost intensive to send to a metallurgical company.#3. Should we source each step ourselves and contract an assembly point?

A. Hi, Phil. I agree that you can’t function without knowing both how much gold is supposed to be on the watch and how much actually is. Frankly, I’d be very surprised if your vendor doesn’t know exactly how much gold is on the watch because they have several ways to tell , and a lot of incentive to know .

#3. I can’t help with #3 and I doubt that anyone can without a lot of investigation. Good luck.

Cost Per Part For Silver Plating

I’m an engineering student working on a project involving silver electrodeposition. I need to calculate the cost of silver per part using a silver cyanide plating process. If I were to use a barrel plating process and silver nuggets for the anode is there a formula to calculate cost of silver required per part? I am sure you need to factor in square footage and desired plating thickness, but how do I factor in such things as dragout costs and plating efficiency? What are the current prices for both copper and silver anodes? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Creating Innovative Electroplating Solutions

To do that, we commissioned a special tool that would enable us to spot-plate, so that the gold would be precision-placed onto just four critical points rather than having to be applied in two stripes along the whole length of the roll, as it had been previously.

As a result, we were able to reduce the use of gold by some 25%, leading to significant cost savings, particularly given the often high price of gold.

Coming up with and then applying innovative solutions is just one of the ways in which we help our customers create better products.

Why Solid Gold When Gold

How Much Does it Cost to Rhodium Plate my Ring?

The prices of solid gold jewelry are unfathomable for many people. Instead of succumbing to the great desire to wear gold jewelry, the gold-plating process made fashion jewelry so much more affordable. As you visit different and view the catalogue of many brands, the first thing you must do is make sure they are reputable.

You also have the choice of shopping on e-commerce giants. A quick look shows over thousands of gold-plated jewelry, with many products costing less than $30.

Make sure that you are not comparing apples to oranges like 14K to 18K gold plating in making comparisons. Moreover, you also try to know the type of base metal used and the thickness of the gold plating. These are the information you can obtain from the merchant. As for the veracity of the claims, that is up to you to decide. Lastly, you also want to make sure that the craftsmanship is superior. These are the pieces that would look no different from solid gold jewelry.

Indeed, why should you buy solid gold when you can get more than good enough gold-plated jewelry? Because of low costs, you can have separate sets of jewelry, giving you the option of choosing which piece to wear at any given time, depending on your mood.

Does Gold Plated Rust

Tarnish Resistance: Gold does not tarnish, rust, corrode and is hypoallergenic. If it is gold plated correctly, this issue is completely eliminated. Increasing Value: Most jewelry makers and artists choose to make their pieces out of brass, bronze, silver or copper as it is affordable and easy to work with.

K Gold Plated Jewelry

Simply said, it is jewelry with a plating layer made of 100% pure, high-quality 24K gold. Jewelers get it by applying an extra thin gold layer to the base metal surface by using electricity.

That way, gold bonds to the base metal and forms gold-plated jewelry. Basically, you will get the base metal jewelry with the 24k gold layer when purchasing 24 gold-plated jewelry.

Dont be fooled with the 24K gold included in your jewelry. It is the purest gold but is also highly soft and not much durable. As a result, the plated layer will get scratched over time.

The gold layer thickness can significantly vary but must be within the value determined by the Federal Trade Commission. This value is up to 0.5 microns for gold-plated jewelry and about 2.5 microns for heavily plated jewelry.

When the gold layer is thinner than 0.5 microns, such jewelry is considered gold electroplates. Jewelry with gold plate thinner than 1.75 microns is regarded as gold flashed or gold-washed pieces.

What Is 12k Gold Filled

If you find an item that is marked 12K gold plated, that probably means that the gold that has been used to plate the item is 12K gold. However, in the past, some jewelers have played around with their stampings, and assigned karat ratings that reflect the total gold content of the item by weight.

Can You Shower With 18k Gold

Wearing solid gold jewelry, white gold or yellow gold, in the shower will not harm the metal itself, however it can reduce the shine therefore it is not recommended. Showering with gold plated jewelry can eventually cause the gold layer to wear off completely, therefore you should definitely refrain from doing so.

Rhodium On White Metals

White gold starts out yellow and no matter how much alloy is added to make it white you may still notice some yellow undertones. Consequently, it is common for manufacturers to apply a very thin plating of rhodium.

Rhodium is a silver-white metal from the platinum group and is commonly used in this way. Because it does not oxidize it stays shiny and reflective. Over time this rhodium plating may wear thin. Therefore, some people like to have this rhodium reapplied to get back that crisp brilliant white.

We apply rhodium with an electroplating process that adds a very thin coating to your jewelry.

Can Somebody Give Me A Rough Estimate As To What The Gold Plating Price Might Be

Q. So I have a tiny little USB with a 2-part case and I want to get it gold plated, along with 4 smaller metal pieces, really tiny like a tiny keyring and stuff like that that links necklace parts together.

A. Hi Benjamin. Unfortunately, onesy-twosy pieces like that require individual logging, inspection, possible polishing, planning & scheduling, racking, handling, and packaging. A lot charge of $25-$250 would not be unexpected even if the cost of the gold is but a few cents.

But hopefully Vern will open a shop and do the job for a quarter 🙂

The thing he is very right about, is that production volume largely controls the cost. You can probably get 10 of each plated for that same lot charge and if the order were for 100,000 and the gold plating quite thin, it might cost just pennies each.
