Biggest Takeaway From The Competition

USMNT vs. Mexico: 2021 Gold Cup Final | Highlights & Reactions

Jeff Carlisle: The U.S. player pool is deeper than originally thought. Heading into the tournament, there were a lot of question marks about certain positions and while a few still linger — namely who is going to claim the starting striker spot — more questions were answered. Miles Robinson looks like a player who can be a real contributor at center-back. Kellyn Acosta is a solid backup for Tyler Adams in defensive midfield and given Adams’ difficulty with injuries, could very well be called upon to play. Goalkeeper Matt Turner can give Zack Steffen and Ethan Horvath a run for their money between the posts, too.

Berhalter also has the luxury of identifying players who can excel in “supersub” roles, be it a midfielder like Cristian Roldan or an outside-back like Shaq Moore. It all gives Berhalter something of a selection puzzle when it comes to naming a roster for World Cup qualifying, which begins in September, but he has many more options than he had before and that is a positive development.

Gold Cup Guest Invites Not Unprecedented

Special guest teams at international competitions is not a new practice in global soccer. CONMEBOL, the South American soccer body, regularly invited Mexico to its Copa America and the USA participated in the Copa America in 1993, 1995, 2007 and 2016, advancing to the semis on two occasions .

CONCACAF has invited teams in the past to help boost the level of world-class competition at the Gold Cup and provide quality opposition for its teams, and it started with one of the best out there: Brazil got an invite to three Gold Cup tournaments in 1996 , 1998 and 2003 . Other Gold Cup invitees have included Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, South Africa and South Korea.

But with the quality of its national teams improving considerably, CONCACAF moved away from the practice after 2005 and Qatars invitation has been the first one since then.

Gomez: Canada is already there. As was the case with Mexico and the USMNT, Canada was without several of their biggest stars for the Gold Cup. However, they showed they’re deeper than ever and boast an electric group of young talent — Buchanan was a revelation, rightfully winning the tournament’s Best Young Player award — who will challenge to make their first World Cup since 1986.

Meanwhile, Central America is also experiencing a changing of the guard, yielding an interesting preview of what’s to come in World Cup qualifying. Costa Rica,Panama and Honduras have lost quite a bit of steam, while El Salvador was a welcome surprise under manager Hugo Perez. Beyond the three North American countries, La Selecta will challenge Jamaica for the playoff spot and make life difficult for every opponent along the way.

Bonagura: Even without its two best players, Canada advanced to the semifinal, where it had its chances to beat Mexico before losing at the death. So, the short answer is: yes. Canada is on the rise and will be a tough opponent for the United States and Mexico for years to come. Canada hasn’t qualified for the World Cup since 1986, in Mexico, and the expectation this cycle should be for that to change.

Qatars Schedule At The Gold Cup

Qatar, coached by Spaniard Felix Sanchez, played group stage matches in Houston and put on a show against Panama , Grenada and Honduras to finish top of Group D.

Qatars No. 58 world ranking was the fifth-best going into the 16-team Gold Cup. Its standout players have included captain Hassan Al-Haydos , forward Almoez Ali, who was top scorer at the 2019 Asian Championship, and sensational winger Akram Afif.

Theres no doubt that Qatar, still unbeaten in 2021, will have ambitions to continue their run. Qatar will face El Salvador in the quarterfinals and should it advance, it will take on the USA or Jamaica in the semifinals. Qatar already beat El Salvador in a friendly in the leadup to the Gold Cup.

It would probably be considered a success if the Asian champs can advance far enough to get a game against regional powers Mexico or the USA, potential opponents at the 2022 World Cup. If the matches help Qatar, they will also be useful to the CONCACAF teams that might also have to face the Qataris down the line.

A Guide To All 16 Gold Cup Teams

The 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup is here, leaving 16 teams to vie for this summer’s confederation championship title.

Broken down by nation, here’s the rundown of what each contender brings to the field. They’re divided into four groups and eyeing a ticket to the August 1 final at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

How qualified: Canada punched their ticket with a second-place finish in Concacaf Nations League Group A.

Gold Cup history: This will be Canada’s 15th Gold Cup and 12th in a row. They’ve made it to three title games and won it all in 2000.

Head coach: John Herdman, who guided the team to the quarterfinals of the last Gold Cup, is 18-4 since taking the reins in 2018.

Key man: Even with all the in-form forward line talent available, Alphonso Davies is still Canada’s main man. From recovery help at the backend to his terrifying motor driving the attack, the Bayern Munich star can take over matches.

Player to watch: With veteran No. 1 Milan Borjan off to prepare for Champions League qualifying with Red Star Belgrade, Vancouver netminder Maxime Crepeau now has the chance to start making his name at the international level. His shot-stopping can keep Canada in games when they’re under fire.

MLS connections: Thirteen players on Canada’s tournament squad can currently be found on MLS rosters, and another four previously played in the league.

How qualified: Topping Nations League Group D did the trick.

Canada Closes Out Gold Cup Preliminary Round With Loss To United States

United States forward Gyasi Zardes chases down the ball as Canada midfielder Samuel Piette defends during the first half of a CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer match in Kansas City, Kan., Sunday, July 18, 2021.

KANSAS CITY — Canada conceded a goal 20 seconds in and lost 1-0 to the U.S. in their final preliminary-round game Sunday at the Gold Cup.

The Canadian men found their way back into the game after Shaq Moore’s opening goal but were unable to breach the U.S. defence despite having the edge in play as the match wore on.

With both teams already qualified for the quarterfinals, the game at a soldout Children’s Mercy Park decided first place in Group B. The North American rivals came into the game with the same goal difference but 70th-ranked Canada had scored one more goal, meaning the 20th-ranked Americans had to win to finish first while the Canadians only needed a draw.

Canada came into the match 8-0-0 in 2021, outscoring mainly lesser opposition 39-3, with its last loss coming in January 2020, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Iceland. But the U.S. represented a significant increase in the degree of difficulty.

It was a disastrous start for Canada, which conceded 20 seconds in. Canada failed to win several duels in its own end and Sebastian Lletget, given plenty of space on the left flank, sent in a low cross that eluded goalkeeper Max Crepeau and set up Moore for a tap-in at the far post. It was his first goal in his eight senior U.S. appearances.

Player Who Impressed You The Most

Carlisle: Miles Robinson. The U.S. center-back should have been named the player of the tournament. Not that it matters that much to him as he’ll gladly settle for being part of the Gold Cup championship team, but Robinson was dominant in every game, putting out constant fires and delivering composure on the ball.

In the final, Robinson even showed off his ability to carry the ball forward into the attack. And he was central to a U.S. defense that conceded but one goal — a penalty kick, at that — the entire tournament.

Will it be enough to break into the U.S. starting lineup? There is an open slot alongside John Brooks, and Robinson’s mobility could make him an ideal replacement for the injured Aaron Long. There is competition as well, though, and and Matt Miazga won’t give up without a fight, but Robinson’s emergence was the most positive development for the U.S. in the Gold Cup.

Gomez: While Canada’s Buchanan was spectacular throughout the Gold Cup, Qatar’s Almoez Ali continued his prolific run with his national team, raising many eyebrows along the way.

The 24-year-old striker won the competition’s Golden Boot award and displayed a mix of speed and skill that enthralled observers and rankled defenders throughout. Ali walks away as the only player to win the top scorer award at both the Asian Cup and CONCACAF’s premier national team competition.

In the Gold Cup, Hoppe’s confidence and willingness to take people on stood out, and he’s earned a spot this fall.

The 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Got Underway On 10 July Was Held Across 11 Different Stadiums Throughout The Us And Now We Are Down To Just Two Sides

Sixteen sides started the month of July with hopes of lifting the CONCACAF Gold Cup trophy on 1 August – some more wishful thinking that others – as the biggest prize in North and Central American international soccer was laid on the line.

Perennial favourites Mexico and the USA were seen as the sides to beat and it turned out that way, with both of the great rivals now set to meet in the showpiece final.

Is Anyone Going To Challenge The Usa And Mexico Moving Forward

Highlights: Qatar 0-1 USA . Gold Cup 2021

Carlisle:Canada looks to be the team best-positioned to threaten the U.S./Mexico hegemony. The Reds had already made some noise in the CONCACAF Nations League when they defeated the U.S. at home. Then, they arrived at the Gold Cup without two of their best players before being depleted further when forward Ayo Akinola went down with a torn ACL. And yet Canada pushed both Mexico and the U.S. to the limit, losing both matches by a single goal.

Tajon Buchanan was already looking like an immense talent at the club level with the New England Revolution. Now he’s showing the same at international level. Stephen Eustaquio impressed, too. When Canada gets its full team together, it could prove formidable indeed.
