The price change is a part of a five-year toll program approved in 2019 to keep up with bridge maintenance and sustain bus transit and ferry services. The district says it has yet to fully recover from the effects of the pandemic, with bridge traffic down by 20 percent and its bus and ferry ridership down by 70 percent and 90 percent from its pre-pandemic levels, respectively.

On Thursday, July 1, 2021, all Golden Gate Bridge toll rates will increase. More info here:

With the declines in Bridge traffic and transit ridership, the toll and transit fare programs provide critical funding that helps the District continue operations at the Golden Gate Bridge and maintain transit service through the regional reopening and economic recovery, the district said in a news release.

The bridge district still plans to provide lower transit fares for those with Clipper cards and those eligible for discounted fares.

The district is also raising fares on the Golden Gate Ferry and Golden Gate Transit Buses. See the full list of updated fares.

Steven And Kellie Page

$9.75 to cross the Golden Gate Bridge? 5 toll increase ...

On January 28, 1993, Steven Page murdered his wife Nancy and then threw his daughter Kellie off the Golden Gate Bridge, before jumping off the bridge himself.

Page worked as a buyer at Owaga-Mune Nursery in Fremont, California. The Page family home was in Fremont, but Page maintained a separate apartment after he and his wife separated. At 10:00 am on January 28, Page drove to their Fremont house and murdered his wife with a 12 gauge shotgun. He then left a message for his mother-in-law to pick up his nine-year-old stepson from school. After arriving at the Page home, she discovered the body of her daughter. Page, after killing his wife, drove with their three-year-old daughter, Kellie, to the Golden Gate Bridge. Highway patrol officers noticed Page walking along the bridge carrying a bundle and recognized it to be a small child. After being approached by the officers because of his unusual behavior, Page threw Kellie over the railing, then climbed over the railing himself and jumped off. Following the incident, investigators were puzzled by Page’s apparent lack of psychological indicators prior to the murder/suicide.

History Of The Bridge

The idea for the bridge can be traced back to 1919, when officials in San Francisco wanted to explore the concept of building a structure to span the Golden Gate Strait, which was the body of water that connected the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. City Engineer Michael M. OShaughnessy came up with the initial design for the bridge. In November of 1930, a bond measure was passed to pay for the construction of this bridge and the process of building it began in 1933.

Interestingly enough, the construction bonds were repaid in full in 1971, and totaled $35 million for actual principal for the project, along with close to another $40 million for interest. All of the money was paid back by toll revenue.

Is The Golden Gate Bridge Toll Fee Indicated Before Entering The Bridge

I was traveling to San Francisco last weekend and went through the Golden Gate Bridge. I have just received an 8 USD toll invoice by mail .

Is the toll fee indicated to the car drivers before entering the bridge? I didn’t see any sign but could have missed it as it was at night .

The toll seems to only apply for the outside San Francisco -> inside San Francisco bridge direction .

First, there’s a “LAST EXIT BEFORE TOLL” sign alerting you that you have 1/2 mile to exit before the toll.

Then, there’s a sign advising you to call 511 for “travel info” and “toll info.” Not a particularly useful sign, but it does further indicate the presence of a toll ahead.

Then there’s another a “LAST EXIT BEFORE TOLL” sign at the southbound Alexander Avenue exit, which is your last chance to get off before driving over the bridge. The sign stating the toll price is a short distance after the exit; you’re already committed at the point you see it.

If you enter the freeway from that last exit, you’ll find two TOLL signs and an opportunity to go right or left .

Signs in the US have several color schemes:

Opening Festivities And 50th And 75th Anniversaries

The bridge-opening celebration began on May 27, 1937, and lasted for one week. The day before vehicle traffic was allowed, 200,000 people crossed either on foot or on roller skates. On opening day, Mayor Angelo Rossi and other officials rode the ferry to Marin, then crossed the bridge in a motorcade past three ceremonial “barriers,” the last a blockade of beauty queens who required Joseph Strauss to present the bridge to the Highway District before allowing him to pass. An official song, “There’s a Silver Moon on the Golden Gate,” was chosen to commemorate the event. Strauss wrote a poem that is now on the Golden Gate Bridge entitled “The Mighty Task is Done.” The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt pushed a button in Washington, D.C. signaling the official start of vehicle traffic over the Bridge at noon. As the celebration got out of hand there was a small riot in the uptown Polk Gulch area. Weeks of civil and cultural activities called “the Fiesta” followed. A statue of Strauss was moved in 1955 to a site near the bridge.

    Pay A Fastrak Toll Invoice

Authorities consider Golden Gate Bridge tolls

As of January 2021, tolls incurred at Bay Area bridges will be included on a Toll Invoice when a toll is not electronically collected through the use of a FasTrak toll tag, License Plate Account, or One-Time Payment.

FasTrak will issue an invoice to the vehicleâs registered owner following the first toll crossing. Any future toll crossings will be included on a monthly invoice, the period for which starts on the date of the first crossing. You must pay this invoice within 21 days online, over the phone, by mail, or by using a Cash Payment Location. State bridges and Golden Gate Bridge transactions will be on separate monthly invoices.

If you use Bay Area Express Lanes, you must use a FasTrak toll tag, otherwise you will receive a violation notice including toll evasion penalties.

Why Drive When You Can Walk Or Bike

How you experience the Golden Gate Bridge depends on where you are going and why. For locals who travel back and forth from the surrounding counties to the city proper, the bridge is the means to get to the destination and requires going through an electronic toll that is required for cars in the southbound direction. The length of the bridge spans 1.7 miles and this roadway is traveled by more than 110,000 every single day.

But driving certainly isnt the only option. For people who come to the bridge to experience its stunning architecture and enjoy the view from the deck, you might use the passenger walking and biking lanes. Pedestrians have access on the East lane sidewalk during specified hours, which vary depending on the time of year. Electric wheelchairs are also allowed in this lane. There is no toll for using the sidewalk.

Bikes may use both the East and West sidewalks any time of the day or night and they do not have to pay a toll. However, electric gates restrict the sidewalks in the evening and overnight so cyclists need to push a buzzer and be approved by security in order to gain access to this area after hours.

Suicides At The Golden Gate Bridge

Between 1937 and 2012, an estimated 1,400 bodies were recovered of people who had jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge, located in the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States.

In 2013, 118 potential jumpers were talked down from their attempt and did not jump. As of 2013, it is estimated that 34 people have survived after jumping. Some die instantly from internal injuries, while others drown or die of hypothermia.

A number of measures are in place to discourage people from jumping, including telephone hotlines and patrols by emergency personnel and bridge workers. Although it had previously been considered impractical to build a suicide barrier, in 2014, the bridge’s directors approved a proposal for a net below the bridge’s deck, extending out either side, rather than side barriers at the railings as had long been proposed.

Bay Area Toll: Sued Over Outrageous Untimely Toll

Class Action Reporter Aug 22, 2014

The Golden Gate Bridge’s electronic tolling system can lead to inflated nonpayment charges of $76, generating millions of extra dollars for the bridge and its private contractor, Xerox, a class action claims in San Francisco Superior Court, reports Elizabeth Warmerdam, writing for Courthouse News Service.

Lead plaintiff Michael Saliani sued the Bay Area Toll Authority, Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, and Xerox State and Local Solutions, alleging a scheme to charge drivers “inflated and outrageous penalties” for not timely paying the bridge toll.

In March 2013, the Golden Gate Bridge converted to an all- electronic tolling system, no longer giving drivers the option to manually pay the $6 toll to cross the bridge.

Drivers can enroll in the FasTrak program, which requires them to mount a transponder in their vehicle. As the vehicle passes through the Toll Plaza, an overhead antenna reads the signal from the transponder and money is debited from the owner’s prepaid account. Approximately 85 percent of the vehicles that cross the bridge are enrolled in this program, according to the complaint.

Drivers not enrolled in FasTrak must pay the toll through the Pay-By-Plate program. Cameras at the Toll Plaza take pictures of the vehicles’ license plates as they pass through and the toll is assessed by charging the owner’s license plate account, receiving a onetime payment from the driver, or issuing a toll evasion violation.

    Seismic Vulnerability And Improvements

Golden Gate Bridge Prepares for All-Electronic Toll Taking

Modern knowledge of the effect of earthquakes on structures led to a program to retrofit the Golden Gate to better resist seismic events. The proximity of the bridge to the San Andreas Fault places it at risk for a significant earthquake. Once thought to have been able to withstand any magnitude of foreseeable earthquake, the bridge was actually vulnerable to complete structural failure triggered by the failure of supports on the 320-foot arch over Fort Point. A $392;million program was initiated to improve the structure’s ability to withstand such an event with only minimal damage. A custom-built electro-hydraulic synchronous lift system for construction of temporary support towers and a series of intricate lifts, transferring the loads from the existing bridge onto the temporary supports, were completed with engineers from Balfour Beatty and Enerpac, without disrupting day-to-day commuter traffic. Although the retrofit was initially planned to be completed in 2012, as of May;2017 it was expected to take several more years.

    What Are The Extra Costs

In case you have a rental car that uses the EToll, you may be charged an additional fee for more than $6 of the toll fee. ;If you use the rental car pay-by-plate option, you will be billed for the toll plus a processing fee of about $3 per day up to a maximum of $15 for the rental.

If you fail to pay your toll invoice within 21 days, you will be issued a $25 penalty.
