Production Of Cored Wire

The techniques used usually involve the production of continuous lengths of accurately dimensioned carat gold strip suitable for forming around a metal core. This is, perhaps, best achieved by continuously casting rod at a size typically between 5 and 10mm diameter and flat rolling on a continuous flat rolling train. Continuously cast strip can also be a starting point as can static casting of flat ingots followed by rolling and slitting. Core material can be purchased as rod at the necessary size or manufactured in-house. Major differences in technique occur when considering the form of the core. The simplest shape is round rod and machines are available in which the carat gold strip and the core rod are fed into a series of special dies in which the strip is wrapped round the rod and the composite drawn to wire. However, round rod is not often used as a core, certainly in Italy where most of the techniques and associated equipment have been developed, because of the difficulty in maintaining alignment of the open seam.

A further technique involves welding carat gold sheet to copper or iron sheet at a thickness ratio of between 1:5 and 1:10. The composite is rolled to strip and then drawn through dies which fold the strip round with the copper or iron on the inside acting as a core. The composite can then be drawn to finished size and made into chain. This technique is capable of giving a bonded iron core which helps in the production of some types of chain.

Techniques For Connecting & Assembly

Unless youre making a solid piece , there is typically one constant when making jewelry: You must connect and assemble all the individual components to create the finished design. Here are some of the most used techniques:

Jewelry Knotting: Most often used in beadwork, knotting plays an important role both functionally and aesthetically. Knowing which is the right knot to use and making it correctly make your beadwork last longer because the strands wont unravel.

Depending on the stitch you are using, the kind of thread and bead sizes, the type of knots used can vary. This tutorial at The Spruce covers five knots for beginners: The overhand knot, the square knot, the surgeons knot, the half-hitch knot and the larks head knot.

Etsy seller farmgirlflorals uses an adjustable slip knot for the bracelets she creates. Here, she uses rope and leather plus hand-made clear resin beads with suspended flowers grown on her farm in the southern coast of Massachusetts. So pretty.

You can also use knotting applications with digitally produced objects, such as how Etsy seller Leahinc uses a slipknot to make the black waxed cotton cord adjustable on this laser cut honeycomb necklace.

To see some knot making in action, check out this video tutorial from Eclectic Designs that covers not only the overhand and surgeons knots but also the double and sliding knots. And check out this Craftsy tutorial on how to make a simple three-knot bracelet.

Hollow Carat Gold Jewelry

There is always pressure to reduce the cost of manufactured items and carat gold jewellery is no exception to this situation. In fact, it is only relatively recently that the economic and currency turmoil in countries like South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia had such an impact on the local gold price that, at times, gold jewellery sales effectively ceased altogether.

In Indonesia, for example, at a time when the dollar gold price was falling, the gold price in the local currency increased by 90%. What, then, are some of the ways in which gold jewellery costs can be reduced?

One approach is the use of mass production techniques to lower the unit manufacturing cost of items. Such techniques include the well-established chain making, stamping and investment casting, the more recent electroforming and the very recent powder metallurgy processes. These techniques are continually developing as equipment manufacturers make more advances and market their products more widely.

A second route is to make the jewellery out of thinner material, for example, in stamping, carat gold as thin as 0.1mm can now be utilised with individual items weighing significantly less than 1g. However, as thickness decreases so the fragility of the items increases, although it may be possible to counteract this to an extent by means of a final heat treatment if the carat gold alloy is hardenable.

What Is The Difference Between Working With Gold And Other Metals

Pin by sharmila on earrings

Not as much as you might think! Usually when we start working with metals as a jeweller we practice on copper first, move on to silver and then start working with gold. This is to practice with more affordable metals and hone your skills before moving onto the precious metals.

You solder gold in the same way as you solder other metals and it can actually be easier to solder than silver!

You may need to invest in a larger torch e.g. the go system pro torch, a liquid flux such as Auflux, and a charcoal block to put the gold piece on

Local manufacturing

  • Minimums may be high
  • Manufacturing and ethical standards may differ by country

Accurate sketches or 3D renderings of your designs are necessary if youre outsourcing to a manufacturer. There are several options, depending on your skill level and budget:

Dissolution Of The Core

Equipment is readily available to dissolve the base metal core and the better machines address the issues of fume evolution, acid handling and residue disposal. In other words, worker safety and environmental concerns are tackled. For copper and Tombac core removal, nitric acid is used though, for the lower carat golds , significant attack of the copper and silver in the carat gold can occur. It is possible to avoid this problem by dissolving the core out electrolytically with sulphuric acid but dissolution times increase from the normal few hours up to 24 â 48 hours making this procedure less attractive. Commercially available equipment for nitric acid dissolution is shown in Figure 5, this equipment incorporating ultrasonic agitation to reduce the reaction time.

How To Clean Gold

Give solid gold bracelets, chains, and earrings a gentle bath in a solution of a few drops of dish soap and a little warm water. Put small jewelry pieces into a strainer before placing in the solution; large pieces can go directly into the bowl to soak for about five minutes. Swish the items around, then take them out, lay them on a soft cloth and go over the crevices and chain links with a soft toothbrush to dislodge any dirt trapped there. Return small pieces to the strainer and rinse everything under running water. Buff dry with a soft cloth.

What Does Carat/karat Mean

How to Make Gold & Silver Jewelry

The purity of gold is generally measured in carats/karats or fineness. The karat measurement is based on parts of twenty-four, with 24 karat being pure gold. Fineness is measured in parts per thousand, with 999.9 being pure gold. Neither of these measurements indicates what other metal or metals have been used in the alloy.

Gold in its pure form is incredibly soft and hard to work with. So typically the gold we use in jewellery is mixed with other metals, most commonly copper, silver, nickel, palladium or zinc, to create an alloy;that enhances its strength and workability. ; The addition of these other metals and the amount of them used influences the end colour of the gold and of course the karat.

9 karat gold is 37.5% gold

14 karat gold is 58.3% gold

18 karat gold in 75% gold

24 karat gold is 99.9% gold or higher

Typically 9ct Gold and 18ct Gold are used in the UK with 14ct gold being more prevalent in the USA.

9ct gold is harder than 18ct gold so it is important to consider what you will be using the gold for. For example, you may prefer to use 18ct gold for bezels as it will be easier to push the metal over the stone as the alloy is softer.

Cleaning Jewelry With Glued

  • 1Know which types of jewelry should be kept dry. Pieces of jewelry with gemstones that are glued into their setting should not be submerged in water. Warm water can loosen the glue, which can cause your gemstones to fall out, especially when subjected to a thorough brushing.XResearch source For these types of jewelry, use a special cleaning method that avoids total submersion in water.
  • 2Wipe the jewelry with a wet, soapy cloth. Make a small quantity of dish soap solution as in Method One. Dip a soft, delicate towel in the solution and gently scrub your jewelry.
  • 3“Rinse” the jewelry with a cloth dampened with plain water. Gently dab a wet cloth onto the jewelry, taking care to soak up any leftover soap suds.
  • 4Lay or hang the pieces upside down after cleaning. Allow your jewelry to dry in this way. By letting your jewelry dry upside down, you allow any remaining moisture to drip out, ensuring it won’t soak into the setting.Advertisement
  • Making Solid Parts And Pendants

Most beginning jewelry artists should be able to find the supplies they need at retail.

But sometimes buying retail isnt an option. Maybe you cant find the components you want off-the-shelf. Or maybe your creativity is firing and you just want to make one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. To make your own solid parts and pendants, however, youll have to break out more heavy-duty tools or molds.

If youre working with a single material such as wood or metal, for example, you may need to cut away parts with a saw or drill to get your final shape.

For intricate details, or if youre looking for consistency because youre making jewelry to sell or use as a branding tool, then laser cutting is your BFF. Just look at how slick these gold mirror acrylic pieces are.

For even more complex shapes, 3D printing can be your best bet. Artist Joshua DeMonte has taken the concept of 3D printing jewelry to the stratosphere. Are his creations architectural jewelryor sculpture? Or both? You decide.

But what if youre creating mixed-media jewelry? Then jewelry resin is the way to go. Resin is like Jello for your jewelry. It malleable for a short time and then sets into a solid shape. But unlike that fruity gelatin dessert, resin cures and hardens completely to safely protect whatever it surrounds.

Pretty amazing, right? There really is no limit to jewelry makingother than your imagination.

Calculating The Gold Content Value Of A Jewelry Piece

In summary, to determine the gold value content of an item, you first need three bits of information.

    • Weight

Next, if you encounter weights measured in pennyweights, grains, and grams, remember these conversions.

    • 20 dwt to a troy ounce
    • 480 gr to a troy ounce
    • 31 gm, approximately, to a troy ounce

Divide the daily gold price per troy ounce by the appropriate number above. Then, multiply that result by the weight of the item to calculate its pure gold price.

Finally, multiply the items pure gold price by its gold content percentage . This final result indicates the value of the actual gold content of the item. Now, you can figure out the jewelers markup for the piece.
