The 2021 Golden Globes took place semi-virtually on Sunday 28 February, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting a modified ceremony owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
Both hosts performed their duties from separate cities, on opposite coasts. Fey was in New York at the Rainbow Room, a famous venue located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza . Amy Poehler hosted from Los Angeles.
Fey and Poehler were present in person, as were award presenters including Awkwafina, Joaquin Phoenix, Tiffany Haddish, Angela Bassett, and Margot Robbie. Nominees, however, attended remotely, and winners delivered their acceptance speeches via video link.
The ceremony marked a strong night for British performers. Daniel Kaluuya and John Boyega were among the ceremonys early winners, taking home the trophies for Best Supporting Actor Motion Picture and Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion Picture for TV, respectively.
Emma Corrin took Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama for her uncanny portrayal of Diana in The Crown, while Josh OConnor won in the mens category for his part as Prince Charles. The Crown had two more wins: one for the show itself, in the Best Television Series Drama category, and one for American actor Gillian Anderson, voted Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion Picture Made for Television for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.
Golden Globe Awards To Be Held On January 9
After a blistering racial controversy that saw its longtime broadcast partner NBC drop the annual show, the Golden Globe Awards are still happening.
However, two big questions remain: Where will they be broadcast and even more importantly, will any celebs show up?
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association , the journalist organization that run the awards show, didnt answer those two questions, but said the 79th annual event will be held on January 9.
The HFPA also released its deadlines for submissions, and say nominations will be revealed on December 13.
In February of this year, a Los Angeles Times exposé revealed the HFPA hadnt had a Black member in 20 years. Following the controversy and the ouster of one of its heads over racially insensitive emails Hollywood shunned the organization. Tom Cruise even went so far as to return his three trophies in protest.
In August, the HFPA announced reforms to its bylaws and membership rules with the intention of bringing diversity to its ranks.

With the Golden Globes beginning in just a few hours, 2021’s delayed awards season officially in full swing. The show, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now set to take place live this Sunday, Feb. 28, with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. On Tuesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association confirmed to ET that the pair will host the show from opposite coasts — with Fey at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan and Poehler at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
The show had to be pushed back from its typical January date, and a number of other awards shows have as well, including the GRAMMYs, now set for March 14, and the Oscars, which are scheduled for Apr. 25. See the full 2021 awards season calendar here.
Keep reading below for details on how to watch the announcement, the show itself, honorees, ET’s coverage and everything else we know so far about the 2021 Golden Globes, including Golden Globes nominees, Golden Globes presenters and snubs and surprises.
Who’s hosting? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made a powerhouse duo when they hosted the ceremony for three straight years, from 2013-2015. So, it’s no surprise that this year, when the ceremony will have to be a little different, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went with some proven familiar faces at the helm.
Golden Globes : Full List Of Nominees And Winners
Kicking off 2021 with a bang. The first awards show of the year debuted on Sunday, February 28, featuring the biggest stars in both movies and television.
For the first time ever, the Golden Globes were hosted live from two locations. While Tina Fey was at the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center in New York City, her cohost, Amy Poehler, was at The Beverly Hilton hotel where the Globes usually take place in Beverly Hills.
Though its the first time the show will have hosts on different coasts, this marked the fourth time cohosting for former Saturday Night Live costars Fey, 50, and Poehler, 49. The duo helmed the big show in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, some presenters and nominees Zoomed in while others were in person, much like the Emmys format in September 2020.
Presenters included Awkwafina, Cynthia Erivo, Christopher Meloni, Joaquin Phoenix, Kristen Wiig, Reneé Zellweger, Kevin Bacon, Sterling K. Brown, Michael Douglas, Kyra Sedgwick, Susan Kelechi Watson, Kate Hudson and many more.
Netflix dominated the nominations list with 42 total nods, honoring Mank, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Queens Gambit and The Crown. Amazon and Hulu followed with 10 nods each. Amazon is the home of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Small Axe, while Normal People and Palm Springs live on Hulu.
The Crown landed more nominations than any other TV show with six honors, followed by Schitts Creek with five.

So Lets Talk About Our Hfpa Investigation
As outlined in The Times investigation, the HFPA is facing renewed scrutiny over its 87-person membership and fresh allegations of self-dealing and ethical lapses. Our report found that the organization has no Black members, which partially explains the puzzling nominations each year and the oversights in this years crop of nominees.
The 2021 nominees excluded this years Black-led potential Oscar best-picture contenders, including Da 5 Bloods, Judas and the Black Messiah and Ma Raineys Black Bottom. And thats even with Da 5 Bloods director Spike Lees two children being named Golden Globe Ambassadors. Awk-ward.
The organization said the perception that many members are not serious journalists is outdated and unfair and that it is committed to addressing the lack of Black members.
Asked about those criticisms, a representative for the HFPA said: We do not control the individual votes of our members, adding, We seek to build cultural understanding through film and TV and recognize how the power of creative storytelling can educate people around the world to issues of race, representation and orientation.
The investigation analyzes how and explains why the groups role in awards season is so big hint: money and how that came to be. It also sheds light on how one lavish TV show in particular, Emily in Paris, was regaled with so much love.

The 2021 Golden Globes will be telecast live to honour some of the best movies and television shows of the year 2020 from 6.30am IST on Monday, March 1. However, unlike its earlier editions, the 78th Golden Globes Awards will take place virtually. The pandemic has also delayed the Golden Globes awards ceremony by a couple of months, which normally takes place in early January.

NBC has refused to televise the Golden Globes in 2022. Publicists have boycotted the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., and a contingent of studios and streamers cut ties with the embattled group, which came under fire after a Times investigation in February brought to lightallegations of financial and ethical lapses and pointed out that none of the HFPAs then 87 members was Black.
Nevertheless, the HFPA has decided the show must go on, announcing Friday afternoon that it will reveal a slate of awards winners on Jan. 9, the same day that the Critics Choice Assn., a rival group composed primarily of junket press and regional TV entertainment anchors, will present its awards in a ceremony set to be televised on the CW Network.
That the HFPA is forcing its way back into the awards season picture, countering NBCs suggestion, made in May when it pulled the plug on the show, that change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right, isnt exactly surprising. When the vultures are circling , you need to keep moving and show signs of life, even if that means youll be announcing your awards on, I dont know, Facebook Live to an audience of 200 people.
But many publicists and studio executives remain skeptical that the HFPA has sufficiently changed.
In addition to bestowing prizes for both film and television, the two groups have other points in common.

Accusations Of Unfair Treatment
“The humor of Borat is incomprehensible to the majority of people in Kazakhstan, although the film is somewhat funny… At least people look on the map to find out if this is a real country but there are also negative consequences. A friend of mine who lives in the United States told me that Americans of Kazakh origin began to experience bullying.”
Kazakh satirist Murat Dilmanov on reception of Borat in Kazakhstan and international attention on his homeland.
The film’s creators were sued for after including an interview with Judith Dim Evans. Evans died before the film’s release, but her heirs brought the lawsuit alleging that she did not consent to the commercial use of her likeness in the film. Baron Cohenwho dedicated the film to her memoryclaimed that he to reveal to Evans that the piece was a bit, to reduce her concern about the anti-Semitic comments that Borat makes. The lawsuit was dismissed on October 26.
