What Does 14k On A Gold Ring Mean

18KT WHITE Gold worth it??? Color difference between 14kt vs. 18kt

14K gold is a gold metal alloy that indicates 58.3% pure gold combined with 41.7% of other metals. It could either be made into white gold, yellow gold or rose gold color grades based upon the metals in its element.

To get a yellow gold 14K metal, copper, zinc and silver metals are added in specific amounts to create the perfect yellow color. This color shines brilliantly against light and if a gem is set on it, the shine is dazzling.

For a rose gold 14K metal, copper has to be added until the right reddish-pink hue is attained. This color is ideal for all skin tones and genders as well. The pink color is great for downplaying imperfections in crystals if any have been set on it.

White gold 14K metal has the same composition in metal alloys but is coated with rhodium to make the silver color more brilliant and pronounced. This plating makes white gold stronger and more resistant to scratches compared to the other two 14K gold color grades. Clear white diamonds set on white gold look magnificent.

14K gold jewelry pieces are marked as 14K on the metal band. This metal is a highly favored one across the divide. It is stronger than 18K gold and can hold stone settings quite firmly in place.

Being a gold metal that has been alloyed with other metals, it becomes a very affordable alternative to consider for those who desire gold jewelry.

Does Platinum Need To Be Dipped

No, platinum does not require dipping. When platinum is scratched, the metal is not lost, as it is in white gold metal. Instead, the color shifts within the ring itself, creating what is known as a patina finish. Some people love the vintage look platinum patina imparts. In fact, in some cultures, it’s a cherished aspect of platinum jewelry. On an engagement ring, it’s seen as a physical testiment to how long you and your significant other have been together. But if you prefer a new look, you can get your platinum ring professionally polished, or buff it yourself with a soft cloth to restore the shine.

Platinum Is More Durable

Though both gold and platinum are strong and durable precious metals, platinum is the more durable of the two. This is a result of platinums extreme density and chemical structure. For example, the prongs holding the center stone of a platinum engagement ring are less likely to break then those of a gold engagement ring. Pretty neat right? Platinums density means that it will take longer to wear away than gold. And, its chemical structure means that when someone strikes a platinum ring, the metal only moves, instead of being scratched off.

Factors That Affect How Much You Will Receive For Your Diamond Ring

14K White Gold 1.00CTW Bridal Ring

Weve already looked at how where you choose to sell your diamond ring can make a huge difference to how much you receive for it.

But there are many factors to do with the ring itself that can also have a huge effect, some of which are surprising.

Bottom line: the most important thing in determining the price you will receive is the size and quality of the center diamond, not the ring setting.

While you may think of your ring as a single object, to a jeweler it is two separate things:

  • The ring setting
  • When you are buying a ring new, the price of the setting can vary tremendously.

A simple solitaire in 14k white gold may be just a couple of hundred bucks:

While an ornate platinum setting with significant amounts of melee diamonds set into it can be several thousand dollars:

This difference can make a big difference to how much the ring is worth now, and maybe not in the way you might expect.

How Much Is White Gold Worth

Paul: I have an engagement ring, a necklace and a womens watch Id like to sell. My jewelry has different engravings. The engagement ring and the watch are marked with an 18K stamp and the necklace has a 750 hallmark. I hope that all pieces are made of white gold, also the necklace with the 750 marking. Could you please tell me how much my white gold is worth?

Paul: If I understand correctly, white gold is only a normal white-colored gold alloy and worth the same amount of money as yellow gold?

Paul: That brings me to a question. What would happen if I would scratch the watchs surface? Does it turn out to be yellow under the surface?

No, because a white gold alloy is homogenous and entirely white. You can scratch or file as much as you want it stays white.

Paul: I learned a lot today. Thanks for that! What about the engagement ring? How much is my white gold engagement ring worth?

Your white gold engagement ring also sells for the current material value. Its solid worked but shows strong signs of wear. The 18K gold ring has a weight of 8 grams. We pay 90% of the stock market value for gold. In that case this would be a current stock market value of $338.02 today and our purchase price would be $304.52 for your white gold ring.

Paul: Ok, I understand. I think thats a very fair price. 90% is the highest payout I hear so far. Locals have offered me 60% for my gold. And finally, how much is my white gold necklace worth?

I will do so. I thank you for your question.

    The Weight Of The Ring

For the ordinary 14K rings typical selling, the criteria include its state, weight, and current gold price. There are scrap gold calculators on the Internet that can help you do the calculations precisely and exactly.

For instance, the following table shows the current value for one gram and one ounce of 14 K gold compared to 24K and 10 K gold.

    Quality of gold
    $ 1,939.0 99% pure gold

The 24 K gold costs the most as its purity is 99%. Since the 14 K gold is only 58% pure, it is always cheaper. Now, when you know your golds value and what to expect, lets visit the pawn shops.

    How To Define Gold Value

The gold has different values presented in karats . As you might guess, it is not the same if you have a 24K or a 10K ring in your possession. The more karats the ring has, the more precious it is.

Karats of gold for one gram

    Price

    24 K

    $ 63.19

The karats you can often find in the US are 10K, 14K, 18K, and 24K. However, you can find gold with many more variations in karats outside North America, including 8K, 9K, 13K, 15K, 16K, 19K, 20K, 21K, 21.6K, 22K, and 23K.

As you can see, 24K gold is the most valuable and the most expensive. On the other hand, 10K gold is the least valuable and the cheapest one you can find in the US.

Keep in mind that it is the price of gold in general. Another aspect of its value depends on whether you buy jewelry or sell it. Therefore, the same golden ring has different values when purchasing the new one or resell it after a while.

The amount of money you can expect in such a case will vary. The goldsmith will always consider the number of karats and the overall state of the ring.

When you buy a ring in a jewelry store, it is considered new. Its price is always higher compared with a piece of jewelry you want to sell. In such a case, it is always considered scrap gold.

Does Resale Value Differ From Retail Value And Insurance Value

How To Tell How Much Your Gold Is Worth – Determining Gold Scrap / Melt Value
    • The insurance value is typically the retail value of the item plus inflation.
    • The retail value is how much the piece would sell for if you were to buy it in todays market.
    • The resale value is its value on the current second-hand jewelry market.

It is important to understand the difference between the resale value and the insurance value. The reality is that the resale value will be lower than the insurance value of your jewelry because:

Insurance companies inflate the value so as to charge a premium, which is in addition to the already inflated retail value.

Antique jewelry valuation is a highly specialized and complex area. It requires an extensive amount of historical knowledge as an up to date understanding of the current antique jewelry market. Every piece is different, with a different story, significance and value. This means that it is impossible to generalize about antique jewelry worth as a whole.

How Much Is A Diamond Gold Ring Worth

A diamond gold ring can be very valuable. An expert calculates the value based on the diamonds carat weight, the designer, the manufacturer, the gold alloy, other mounted gemstones and the provenience. Small gold rings with small diamonds are not very valuable. You can check your diamonds by yourself using a ruler or a caliper. Determine the diameter to find out if you have a valuable diamond.

    Diamond diameter
Good value, youll get a significant premium for your diamonds gold ring.
6.5 mm and higher 1.0 carat and higher High value, youll get a high premium for your diamond ring, the gold value is from secondary importance.

You can be sure that a gold ring with a mounted diamond bigger than 6.5 mm is very valuable. Take a look at the price list for a 1 carat diamond to get a first impression or visit our website under Diamond Price List.

The Real Situation In The Pawn Shops

First of all, you shouldnt expect to walk in the pawn shop and get the amount of money you previously researched or determined to claim. It is more complicated than that.

Also, keep in mind that the pawn shops wont offer the same gold price when selling and buying jewelry. It is always significantly different, and you will need to fish out for the best price. To be sure you are not tricked for the real gold ring price, you can always ask to see their license to sell and buy gold.

Be aware that the pawn shop owner needs to make money out of your gold, and you will never get 100% what you have expected.

The fair price you can get is 55 to 75% of the particular rings estimated value. Keep in mind that the given prices are always for a simple ring without a gemstone.

    Grams
    24 $22

When you want to make the final price for more complex rings, you will need to calculate all parts separately. It is quite a challenging job if you are not a professional. However, you can always ask around or check the details.

After comparing the price of 14K gold per gram that the pawn shop offers with its value on the market, you will notice a big difference. Even though one gram of 14K gold is $36 on the market, the pawn shop will provide you with only 13$ per gram for the ring with the same number of karats.

In case you are not in a hurry, you should always check several pawn shops. Compare prices, find the most favorable place, and bargain for the best possible price.

What I Would Like To Encourage Is Rhodium Free Gold

White gold does not have to be rhodium plated. Historically, white gold was plated in Rhodium because the first white gold alloys were not very successful. However the 9ct and 18ct white golds available are a lovely colour that does not have to be plated to appear white in tone. Yes, if you compare natural, non-plated white gold side by side to Palladium, Platinum or Rhodium plated gold, you will see a difference. But individually, natural white gold will appear white. 9ct white gold has a slightly creamier, golden hue. 18ct white gold is darker, almost gunmetal in tone. Both these warm white tones can suit a lot of skin tones better than the stark, icy cool white of Platinum, so it is always worth trying them all on before making your final decision on metal.

Of course, it is a personal decision but I cant help but feel that with the rising popularity of Palladium since it gained its hallmark in 2009, there simply is no need for Rhodium plated white gold anymore.

What You Should Know About Selling Gold

10k White Gold Womens Diamond Ring Cluster Bridal Wedding ...

In their lifetimes, more people will sell a couple of used cars than unload gold jewelry. So it’s key to take time to understand the process to get your best price as you hear more about record gold prices.

    Some tips include:

    • Know the current market price. Call stores to get quotes. See www.goldprice.org as a guide.
    • The higher the karat, the more gold content. Different karats say 14 karat and 10 karat should be weighed separately and priced accordingly.
    • Find a trustworthy appraiser for special jewelry.
    • Ask whether there is a charge for removing the diamonds or stones.
    • Be cautious when someone promotes the “best price” on gold. You still might need to negotiate.
    • The Michigan Precious Metal and Gem Dealer Act requires precious metal dealers to register with the local government or local police agency where they intend to do business. Precious metal dealers must keep a permanent record of each transaction, and must keep all precious items received for nine calendar days. The idea is to make sure the item isn’t stolen. A driver’s license or identification is required to sell gold.

    Why Are Some Selling Gold

At Astrein’s, I met Sean LePine, 21, of Beverly Hills who was selling his grandfather’s 10 karat gold pinky ring with diamond chips for $157.

“I just had it in my drawer,” LePine said.

LePine’s mother had gotten an email from Astrein’s about how the store was buying gold. LePine’s grandfather, who died in 2008, had collected jewelry. The family didn’t have any emotional attachment to the ring, which the grandfather wore in the 1990s.

The grandson, who works at Guido’s Premium Pizza franchise in Auburn Hills owned by family members, figured he could use spending money for things like gas and food.

“Everybody can use a little extra money right now,” said Gary Astrein, one of the owners of Astrein’s Creative Jewelers.

“A lot of it’s broken jewelry,” Astrein said. Or tired pieces, old gold chains, old gold rings.

Many times, he said, the sellers are older customers who wore something for a long time and now realize it’s OK to sell it.

“Their kids don’t want it. They’re not going out wearing it.”

“We write a check on the spot,” Astrein said.

Some people are selling a lot more than an old ring, as Astrein says he has written checks for $4,000 or $5,000.

He showed me a Wayne State University class ring from 1962 that he paid $306 for the other day. It’s a 10 karat man’s ring, which is fairly heavy.

He showed me what I thought was an attractive gold bracelet that a seller obtained around $1,000 for recently.

Selling Your Diamond To A Local Jewelry Store Or Antique Shop

Many local jewelry stores dont buy second hand jewelry because they would rather focus on selling new jewelry the profit margins are better and its less work for them.

If you can find a local jeweler who will buy your ring, they will normally sell it to a dealer who then will sell it to a wholesaler.

Each of these people will be looking to make some profit on their sale, which means that the initial offer that the jeweler will make you is likely to be low.

We offered our ring to 10 local jewelers across the US, and two were interested. The highest price we were offered was: $1,500 $2,000:

What Is The Quality Of The Diamond

When you buy a diamond you receive a certificate, assigning a grade to your gemstone. These are based on the 4Cs -color, clarity, cut, and carat. Diamond quality is the number one determining factor on the value of your stone.

    1. Figure Out the Retail Market Value of Your Diamond

When you are buying a house, the value of your new home varies based on neighboring houses worth. Diamonds work in the same way. The best way to figure out the value of your diamond is to compare it to other gems with the same characteristics.

This will not give you an exact worth, because no two diamonds are the same. The slightest inclusion on your ring can change the value of your diamond. However, you now have an idea as to what you can expect your ring to be worth.

    2. I Have the Diamond Value, Now Lets Sell It

Well, hold your horses there! You are in for a world of disappointment if you think that the number you just saw is going to be what you get. Sorry to say it, but jewelers are not going to give you retail value for your diamonds.

Theyre just not. They need to pay their bills too.

It would be great if a jeweler were to give you the dollar amount you just researched. They can buy diamonds wholesale for the same price!

    3. Now, For the Band

You thought we were done, didnt you? People always forget about the band. No diamond ring is complete without something to set the gem on!
