What To Do With Unused Expired Tea Bags
Green tea that have sat too long in the cupboard, can have a purpose. Before you toss those ancient tea leaves, see how you may be able to recycle them:
- Brew some tea, strain it, let it cool, and water your garden with it as a natural fertilizer.
- Wash your hair with some chilled brewed tea to sooth your scalp and get rid of itching and irritation.
- Make a mouthwash. Green tea kills bacteria and freshens breath.
- Add it to your compost. The acid in the tea will help other compounds in your compost break down quicker.
- Use brewed tea for burns or scratches.
- Deodorize smelly shoes by making a sachet of loose leaves and leaving them in the toe area overnight.

We all have some type of tea in our pantry. Its one of the common items that collects dust in our cupboards until we jump back onto that health kick . I find myself switching back and forth between tea and coffee throughout the year, so some of my tea tends to get neglected a bit longer than anticipated.
In this case, the question becomes, is this old tea safe to drink?
And if it is, how will I know? Do some teas last longer than others? What indicators should I look for? How long does tea last?
These are some of the questions I will be addressing in this post. My hope is to confront the topic of tea expiration from all angles, and to provide you with a sure answer to your tea predicament.

How To Tell If Tea Is Bad
While all teas are different and some lose their flavor more quickly than others, tea essentially does not expire, as long as it’s stored properly.
The important keywords here: stored properly.
If your tea has had any contact with moisture, mold can creep in and take over. Here are a few indicators that mold has created a home in your tea:
- Moisture around the area
- Obvious mold or discoloration
- Unfamiliar smell
If you dont use loose leaf tea, crack open a few randomly selected tea bags and look for these signs.
If youve kept your tea in a dry, cool place away from any immediate heat sources, and in a tightly sealed container, your tea should be free of mold and okay to drink.
Just be warned, it might be a bit weak if it’s old, or the expiration date has passed.
There should be an expiration date on your tea, and if a year has passed, your tea should still be fine. Again, flavor loss will be the ultimate result of age.
There are some herbal blends that contain ingredients such as chocolate, fruit and nuts. These varieties will not keep fresh as long as pure leaf teas. These blends should be consumed within 6 months after purchase, and kept properly stored .

How To Tell If Tea Is Bad Rotten Or Spoiled
Practicing proper hygiene and food safety techniques will help prevent foodborne illness.
Although not a perfect test, your senses are usually the most reliable instruments to tell if your tea has gone bad. If it has gone bad, the pleasant aroma of the leaves will be gone. Tea gone bad only means that the natural oils in the leaves has evaporated over time, making the leaves far less flavorful. Before the flavor is completely gone you can just use extra bags or leaves to still make a fresh pot.
There are, of course, certain health risks associated with spoiled drinks so always remember to practice food safety and enjoy your drinks before their shelf life has expired!

Can Old Tea Make You Sick
Brewed tea can become harmful quite quickly.
Health departments have found tea samples that were left out contained coliform bacteria, which can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
When coliform bacteria are found, other harmful organisms also may be present, such as salmonella and intestinal viruses.
But brewing a cup of “expired” tea will probably leave you with a flat, tasteless cup, and not something that will cause any harm. Tea leaves, when stored properly, are a very shelf-stable food that are known to last decades.
Arnold Palmer Real Sugar
It may be made with real sugar , but there is still over three-quarters of your daily limit of added sugars in these drinks. The good thing is that sugar has less fructose than HFCS, so these beverages “made with real sugar” will have less of the simple carb which directly contributes to fatty liver disease and insulin resistance.

I’ve Been Reading A Lot About Antioxidants Lately What Are They And How Do They Work
Antioxidants are a classification of several organic substances, including vitamins C and E, vitamin A , selenium , and a group known as the carotenoids. Carotenoids, of which beta- carotene is the most popular, are a pigment that adds color to many fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants act as cell protectors. Oxygen, an essential element for life, can create damaging by-products during normal cellular metabolism.
Antioxidants counteract these cellular by-products, called free radicals, and bind with them before they can cause damage. Antioxidants work by binding to the free radicals transforming them into non-damaging compounds or repairing cellular damage. Good sources of antioxidants are found in the most deeply or brightly colored fruits and vegetables as well as tea, both green and black.
What Does Baking Soda Do To Iced Tea
A pinch of baking soda makes a world of difference in a pitcher of freshly brewed sweet tea. How? Baking soda neutralizes the tannins in black tea, giving it a smoother taste. This same trick works to take the bitterness out of green tea as well you can add a teeny pinch to a mug of hot tea as its steeping.

What Happens If You Drink Off Iced Tea

If you think that the tea is off, avoid drinking it.
What Does Stored Correctly Mean
Above, it was mentioned that expired iced tea will not make you sick if it is unopened, has not turned bad, and has been stored correctly. You might be wondering, But what does that mean? Of course, you understand the unopened part, but how do you know if your cupboard has been providing the ideal storage setting for an aging bottle of iced tea? And what exactly are the storage requirements for bottled iced tea?
When the bottle of iced tea is still sealed, it does not need to be stored in the refrigerator. When iced tea is opened, it must be refrigerated at 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and you need to drink it within a week to 10 days. Most labels will advise you to store the product in a cool dark place when it is not going to be used immediately. This means that your iced tea should not be exposed to direct sunlight where it can get warm and potentially start to deteriorate. A room temperature of between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit is fine for storing iced tea if the bottle is sealed. If your bottle of iced tea has been stored in these conditions and it is past its expiration date, chances are that the tea will be 100% fine and will not make you sick if you drink it.

Why Is My Iced Tea Always Cloudy
Why does homemade iced tea sometimes turn cloudy when refrigerated? Cloudiness in tea is caused by caffeine and tannins bonding with each other when tea is refrigerated or iced. The hotter the original brewing water the more caffeine and tannins are extracted from the tea leaves, and the murkier the beverage will be.
Sobe Elixir Green Tea
Rather than brewed tea, SoBe just adds a green tea extract this brew. Which is enough to mislead customers into thinking their product may provide the same fat-burning benefits as the real stuff. Alas, this beverage is basically just caramel color, natural flavor, and an entire day’s worth sugarsupplemented with extra sweetness from stevia extract.

Does Tea Expire Once Its Been Brewed
Absolutely! Once tea is brewed the vitamins and flavors start to deplete. But keep in mind that tea brewed in hot water will decompose slightly quicker, as high temperatures will speed up oxidation.
Tea stored in the fridge will start losing its taste after 1 day, but can be stored in a clean airtight container, and kept in the fridge for up to 3 days . After this point it will start to go off and become volatile. If you keep your tea at room-temp on the counter, dont leave it for longer than 8 hours, and make sure to always cover it with an airtight seal.
Iced tea can be kept in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days, no longer.
