How Do Professionals Test Gold

The GOLD price and how it effects your jewelry’s value per gram

The acid test is the cheapest method used to check gold. Experts start by scratching the touchstone using the gold that needs to be tested, leaving a streak on the stone. If the questionable gold is purportedly 14K, they will then make a parallel control streak using a piece of gold that is already known to be 14K.

This Is The Melt Price

This value is what is known as the melt price of this particular chain. The melt price refers to the actual price that your jeweler would receive from a refiner if they chose to melt it down and just be paid for the value of the gold.

The melt price, like the gold price, changes on a daily basis, but as long as gold stays stable in price, it will pretty much remain the same for any given period of time. Keep in mind that the melt price does not take into consideration any other factors, such as labor to create the piece, any stones that may be set into the piece, or any margin for profit that will be added on at the point of sale. Well discuss these points below.

How Much Is 14k Gold Worth

Besides 18K gold, 14K is the most commonly used alloy in the US. Fourteen-karat gold is a gold alloy, that contains 58.5% pure gold. Its often used for jewelry, accessories, and other items made of gold. It is very uncommon for coins or ingots to be made of 14K gold, with the exception of ingot pendants or coin pendants used for jewelry. Maybe you want to find out how much 14K gold is worth because youre planning to sell 14K gold or buy an item made of 14K gold. Either way, its important to keep in mind that there is a huge difference between the selling price and the buying price.

What Should I Expect The Markup To Be

To have a rule of thumb on what mark-up to expect, think a minimum of double. If the cost of a chain is $500.00 expect to pay $1,000.00 or more. A machine made chain will have a cost of the gold, plus alloyed metals, plus labor to make it.

Earrings, rings, bracelets, are all more complex to create than machine made gold chains. So the mark-up will be more just for that aspect of your jewelry.

Any retail mark-up of course takes into account rents, marketing, staffing and we just won’t go there. Just know that the reason you can’t get it at the price the jeweler does is because you aren’t buying a kilo at a time from a gold manufacturer.

Explanation With Lots Of Math

Snake Chain, Machine Made in Italy 14kt

What this means is that if the 20 gram chain is selling for $1,500.00 and $484.88 is the cost of the gold, the other $1015.12 includes the cost of the other metals, the labor, and the jewelers profit. What percentage is the cost of the other metals? The labor? And the markup from the jeweler? Unknown!

All I can tell you with certainty is that if pure gold is selling for $1300/oz. and the weight of the 14k chain is 20 grams, then the melt price of the gold is worth $484.88. There is no way to know what the jeweler paid for the chain from the manufacturer. Furthermore, we dont know what gold was going for at the time of purchase. The jeweler might have bought it when gold was at $1200.00 per ounce. Or $1800.00 per ounce!

good luck in your gold purchases,

enigma…

Hi Miho, Gold will be no less expensive in Turkey than anywhere else in the world. Jewelers and people who sell gold keep very up-to-date with the international price of gold, and they tie their prices to the international price.

thats not true in north america a jeweler can sell 5gram golden ring for as mach as he can trick u in to… where in istanbul or moust european places will be by gram strictley

In the US, a reputable jeweler will sell gold by the world price per gram, but he is under no obligation to charge that amount. He may, and often does, sell for more than the international market. In addition a jeweler in the US will add a hefty charge for any unique craftsmanship and any precious or semi-precious stones.

What little good jewelery I own was all purchased in Turkey, and every piece of it was 40% to 70% less than I would have paid for similar pieces in the US. I do not trust my skills enough to claim that I am purchasing investment jewelry, but our daughters have all ear marked their favorite pieces. I suspect that they will continue to appreciate in value.

Calculating The Gold Content Value Of A Jewelry Piece

In summary, to determine the gold value content of an item, you first need three bits of information.

  • Weight

Next, if you encounter weights measured in pennyweights, grains, and grams, remember these conversions.

  • 20 dwt to a troy ounce
  • 480 gr to a troy ounce
  • 31 gm, approximately, to a troy ounce

Divide the daily gold price per troy ounce by the appropriate number above. Then, multiply that result by the weight of the item to calculate its pure gold price.

Finally, multiply the items pure gold price by its gold content percentage . This final result indicates the value of the actual gold content of the item. Now, you can figure out the jewelers markup for the piece.

White gold has a lower resale value than yellow gold. The reason white gold is worth less than yellow gold is because alloy cost less but it also means the purity of your gold jewellery is diluted. Buying 10Kt vs 14kt GOLD !!!

Want to find out how much 14K gold is worth? Are you looking to sell some 14K gold? The value of your 14K gold will depend on the item that you own. An antique piece of 14K gold, like a diamond ring, is worth a lot more than just an old bracelet, a necklace, or even scrap gold. Generally, vintage gold or heavily used gold is worth only the scrap gold value because there is almost no market for old-fashioned or damaged items made of gold. Modern brands like Pandora are becoming increasingly popular among Americans. The demand for second-hand jewelry has decreased not only because of those modern brands but also because of the rising price for gold. As the gold price skyrocketed, the market for used jewelry collapsed. So the scrap gold value is what you are looking for if your 14K gold pieces are old-fashioned or broken or have obvious signs of wear. Sell broken gold or sell damaged jewelry with reDollar and get paid top dollars.

Sell 14K gold with reDollar and get paid 90% of the stock market value for your gold.

The Scrap Value Of 14ct Gold

2 Grams Of 14k Gold Is Worth How Much August 2019

Gold is combined with other metals to alter the colour and the hardness of the finished product. Youre most likely thinking of selling your scrap gold jewellery, so lets focus on that.

14ct gold is sometimes used for mens rings, as the higher carats such as 22ct and 24ct, while more valuable, are considered too soft and less able to withstand prolonged wear. Theres actually a measurement for metal hardness called the Vickers scale, and 14ct gold is in the 100 165 HV scale, depending on the other metals used.

14ct gold is a popular purity in countries such as Greece and Italy. Customers should be aware that there is no official guarantee or hallmarking standard in these countries. In our experience, items marked as 14 carat from Greece are often of slightly lesser purity around the 55% purity mark.
