PHILADELPHIA — It was a big night at the ballpark on Friday, and not just because of the Phillies, or even the fact that First Lady Jill Biden was there.

The true stars were the kids.

A special pregame ceremony took over the field at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies are going gold to recognize kids battling cancer and the survivors.

Jill Biden also took the field. Her advocacy for cancer education and awareness dates back to the 90s.

The kids on the field range from 4 to 15.

“Oh my gosh, it’s so wonderful seeing these patients out there. We see them in the hospital, in bed, not in ideal situations, so seeing them running the bases, throwing out the first pitch, it’s amazing,” explained E. Anders Kolb, MD, the Director of Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Dr. Kolb has helped many of the kids on the field, including 14-year-old Danny Feltwell.

“When I was two years old my dad rushed me to the hospital. He thought I had a chest cold, it turned out to be non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” Feltwell said.

Dr. Kolb saved his life.

“I’m feeling really good, hopefully the Phillies will win. That’ll make me feel even better,” said Feltwell.

“I’ve always had this saying for every single person I feel this for.. I always say ‘I believe in you.’ Anything you can do, anything you want to do, you can do,” said Feltwell.

Beaumont Childrens is going gold this September to celebrate patients and families and raise awareness about pediatric cancers during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Some activities include:

  • Placement of more than 500 gold ribbons on trees and yard signs at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Woodward Corners, the Beaumont Service Center and Beaumont Urgent Care Centers. Gold ribbons and signs will also be placed at some patients homes and schools
  • Gold superhero capes for children currently receiving treatment
  • Free Go Gold T-shirts for current pediatric oncology patients
  • Show You Care with Beau the Bear a selfie scavenger hunt for staff to encourage them to raise awareness on their social media platforms
  • A quilt square decorating contest among the staff that will be voted on by pediatric patients
  • Golden photo booth in the Pediatric Oncology office where patients, families and staff can take photos to share and raise awareness
  • Proclamation from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer proclaiming September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan.

Today is September first, the beginning of childhood cancer awareness month. My heart goes out to any family having to go through this with their child. Its not fair, and I could never imagine what its like. We naively go through our days without thinking twice about how good we have it, or what it could be like if the people in our lives were battling to survive each day. Kids dont desserve to go thorugh this, and it can flip an entire familys life upside down. When Jessica, a highschool friend, reached out to me about sharing a few links and rescources online for childhood cancer awareness for her son, Hudson, I didnt want to post a few stories that disapear in 24 hours. SAN ANTONIO Whether its playing in a virtual office or visiting the most remote jungle, 9-year-old Mia Perez loves playing on her Oculus.

Shes full of sass. Her mom Teresa jokes that shes been 16 since she was 6 years old.

I was in a parking lot trying to sell some of their clothes so I can get her bigger clothes because the steroids had made her a little heavier, Teresa said.

Wait, what? Mia replied.

Mia loves movies, her dog Gunner, and shes battling leukemia.

Did you know September is childhood cancer awareness month? Today I spoke with 9 year old Mia Perez who is working to turn all of San Antonio gold and raise awareness about the fight she and others kids face. @ksatnews

I was pretty sad because I wouldnt be able to see Kari or JC or mom and dad ever, Mia said, remembering when she got her diagnosis.

It makes you stronger, you know. Because Mia has been tough, super tough, Teresa said about watching her daughters fight.

Mia was diagnosed on New Years Day in 2021. Shes in remission now and counting down the 36 weeks of treatment she has left.

Thursday I take off one of these until when I go to here, thats the end of treatment, Mia said, showing us a paper chain with the weeks marked on it.

Throughout her neighborhood there are signs promoting Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The ribbon color is gold.

Mia has a big goal of turning all of San Antonio gold to help other kids.
