The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is an oft-criticized, small group of roughly 90 international journalists based in Southern California. However, the Globes broadcast has turned into a momentum builder for films leading into the Oscars, which this year will take place on April 25.
The HFPA has been under renewed attention with a recent Los Angeles Times investigation into the organization, highlighting that the voting membership does not include one Black member .
The investigation further revealed several HFPA voting members enjoyed a studio-funded lavish Paris adventure for the critically mixed Netflix series “Emily in Paris,” which garnered two surprise nominations.

In 2020, the HFPA received widespread criticism for nominating Asian and Asian American films, such as The Farewell, Parasite and Minari, for Best Foreign Language Film while excluding them from the Best Motion Picture categories. The decision to categorize Minari as a foreign language film, despite having an exclusively American production team and setting, was heavily condemned by many actors and filmmakers of Asian descent. While HFPA rules stipulate that a film must have at least 50% English dialogue to be nominated for the Best Drama or Comedy/Musical categories, critics noted that the films Inglourious Basterds and Babel did not meet the 50% threshold but were still nominated for the Best Motion Picture categories, prompting accusations of anti-Asian racism.

When the 78th annual Golden Globes are handed out on Sunday, they will be the first major awards show of the season, coming nearly two months after we would typically find out the best picture winner.
Rather than the Globes usual Beverly Hills gala, this years event will be a hybrid affair, with Saturday Night Live alumnae Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting from opposite coasts: Fey will appear live from the Rainbow Room in New York Poehler from the Beverly Hilton, the awards usual West Coast home. Nominees will be in locations all over the world.
The Globes could help provide clarity on the best picture front-runners for the Oscars a win for Nomadland or The Trial of the Chicago 7 could help an Oscar bid. But the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the Globes, also has a reputation for unpredictability.

Whos Hosting The Show
Beloved comedy duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will cohost the awards show for the fourth time, and it comes as little surprise given the rave reviews theyve received for the trio of shows they emceed between 2013 and 2015. In 2016, the Sisters costars passed the mic back to comedian Ricky Gervais, followed by Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, then Gervais again last year.
However, given social-distancing measures, theyll be video calling in from far-flung locales. Fey will appear from the Rainbow Room in New York City, while Poehler will appear from the Globes usual haunt, the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills.
A Times investigation finds that the nonprofit HFPA regularly issues substantial payments to its members in ways that some experts say could skirt IRS guidelines.

What Movies And Shows Are Even Nominated
It’s been a difficult year for theatrical releases during the pandemic with many theaters closed across the country for 11 months. This explains how streaming service Netflix took a whopping 42 nominations.
Those include director David Fincher’s pack-leading “Mank,” which garnered six nominations for top film drama, director, drama actor , supporting actress , score and screenplay.
Netflix and director Aaron Sorkin’s courtroom drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7” scored five nominations total. Chloé Zhao’s road movie “Nomadland,” which just debuted on Hulu, took four nominations.
The late Chadwick Boseman is in the running to be honored as best actor for his final film role in “Ma Raineys Black Bottom.” Boseman is the favorite in the race with Oldman, Riz Ahmed , Anthony Hopkins , and Tahar Rahim .
