Planting Your Kiwi Trees

Kiwi Plants are not particular about the soil they grow in, so any normal soil is perfectly suitable for them. They do not however like wet soils and do need reasonable drainage to do well. They will grow in infertile soils too in fact they may grow more compactly and produce more fruit if the soil is quite poor. So if you are gardening on poor soil, a Kiwi Plant is an excellent choice both for its bushy beauty and for its delicious fruits.
They do prefer a sunny location, but will be quite happy with some shade for part of the day. Although reasonable watering is a good idea, they are also quite drought-resistant when established.

Whatever Happened To Golden Kiwifruit
I was in Montreal a few weeks ago, and when I stepped into a grocery store I saw something I hadnt seen in a long time: golden kiwifruit. These are one of my favorite fruits definitely in my top five and while I used to buy them all the time, I never see them now.
Where did all the golden kiwifruit go?
Back in 2007 I asserted that these little fruits were almost better than ice cream. Theyre sweeter than green kiwifruit, with a mellow ripe flavor balanced by just the right amount of acidity. Theyre less fuzzy than the green fruits, too, so there is less chance of getting wisps of tough fibers in your mouth.
Golden kiwifruit were my favorite fruit to throw into my lunch bag just halve and scoop out the sweet fruit with a spoon.
But then they disappeared from the grocery store. I havent seen a golden kiwifruit in years. Where did they all go?
An official growers site says that they are in season from May to October, but I didnt see any this summer. They were everywhere a few years ago and now, nada. I did wonder whether it was a regional thing, since I often bought them in Florida, and their availability seemed slimmer here in Ohio. But seeing them so plentiful in Montreal made me wonder if there are import regulations at work here in the U.S.
