Delta Skymiles Gold Vs Platinum

Don't Miss

Avoid Paying An Annual Fee

Which AMEX Delta Skymiles Card is Better, Gold or Platinum?

Both the Amex Platinum and the Amex Gold cards charge annual fees that will cost you several hundred dollars a year. If you cant stomach the thought of shelling out that much for a card, even with all the perks and extras, consider a card like the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card*, which carries no annual fee and earns 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases , 2 points per dollar when using the card to book trips through American Express Travel and 1 point for every eligible dollar on everything else. Plus, use the card 20 or more times on purchases in a billing period and earn 20% extra points on those purchases.

Is The Annual Fee Worth It

Its easy to come out ahead of the $99 annual fee on this card . You can get significant value from perks such as free checked bags, priority boarding, discounted Delta SkyClub lounge access and more.

With the Delta Gold Amex card getting the primary cardholder and up to eight companions their first checked bag free, this perk could make up for the annual fee after just a single trip.

How To Choose The Best Delta Credit Cards

To choose the right Delta credit card, ask yourself:

  • How often do I fly Delta? If you make at least two round trips annually, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card should be enough. With the first-checked-bag-free perk, youll offset your annual fee and earn Delta perks and miles along the way. Note that some benefits apply to all Delta credit cards, such as discounts on in-flight meals.
  • Do I want a Delta card without an annual fee? Only the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card has no annual fee.
  • How much do I spend annually? If you spend less than $25,000 with your card each year, the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card could be the right choice. If you spend $25,000 or more annually, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card is worth considering. And if you spend $30,000 or more annually and want the ultimate Delta perks, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card could be worth adding to your wallet.
  • Will I use these features? To make the annual fees of the higher tier Delta credit cards worth it, you have to reliably make use of each cards perks each year. If you dont see yourself using those perks, you might want to choose a card with a less expensive annual fee and fewer perks.

How To Redeem Miles

You can easily redeem Delta miles at a value of 1 cent each thanks to Pay With Miles, but its not unheard of to get more than double that in value by booking award flights directly through the Delta website.

Its very possible to find amazing deals on Delta award flights. To look up the cost of a flight, youll have to look up a specific route and date. You can also book award flights on partner airlines, like Air France and KLM.

There is no Delta award chart, so its tricky to tell how much your next award flight will cost. This can be a big problem if you dont have a flexible schedule that allows you to pick and choose the best deals. But if you have an eligible Amex Delta credit card, you can pay for Delta flights with miles through the Pay with Miles feature. With this tool, your Delta miles are worth 1 cent each toward Delta flights. Thats probably less than what they would be worth if you booked an award flight outright, but when using Pay with Miles you can book any available seat.

If you dont have enough miles to cover the flight, thats not a problem with Pay with Miles. You can pay for just part of a flight as long as youre using at least 5,000 Delta miles. With award flights, its all miles or nothing. Pay with Miles helpful if youve got a few extra miles sitting unused in your Delta account. The one drawback is that you have to pay in 5,000-mile increments.

Delta Skymiles Platinum Vs Citi Premier Card

discontinued

The first major difference between the CardName and the CardName is that the CardName has a smaller annual fee. It’s AnnualFees versus the CardName’s AnnualFees fee. Citi is a CardRatings advertiser.

The CardName has a generous rewards program, offering three points per $1 spent on hotels, air travel and at gas stations. You’ll also get three points per $1 for restaurants and supermarkets and one point per $1 on all other purchases.

Another thing to like the limited time bonus of 80,000 points new cardholders earn after spending $4,000 in the first three months is worth $800 in gift cards when redeemed through the ThankYou portal. Not too shabby. There are also no foreign transaction fees, and you’ll probably enjoy Citi’s 24/7 personal concierge service.

In fact, there’s a lot to like about CardName, but since it’s not connected to an airline like Delta, you don’t get flight-related perks like that the CardName offers. There’s no free checked bags, waived fees or discounted access to an airline club at the airport with this card. There are airlines you can transfer your points to, but mostly, they’re international airlines, like Turkish Airlines and Thai Airways however, if you travel internationally a lot, and you’re not wedded to a certain airline like Delta, you may still feel like you’re flying high with the CardName.

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card card offers outstanding travel perks. Cardholders earn 3 miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases, 2 miles per dollar spent at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, and 1 mile per dollar spent on all other expenses. It has a $250 annual fee, but you could justify that cost just by using the round-trip companion pass.

Amex Delta Gold Vs Delta Platinum Which Is Best

Personally, I think for most people . If you have already gotten the bonus card, then consider either the Delta Platinum card or the Amex Gold Business card. Remember, that you may have a business even if you dont think you have a business. The Delta Platinum card is best for people that are already frequent Delta travelers and looking for the ability to get extra MQMs to help with qualifying. The companion certificate is a nice option, but given the $250 annual fee, I would just apply for the Delta Gold card if you havent had it before.

Delta Frequent Flyer: Stay At Delta Platinum Vs Going For Diamond

Which Delta Amex card should you get? Delta Gold versus Delta Platinum

Delta frequent flyers love accruing airline status. Yet every year you have to fly the miles to maintain those upgraded benefits. It would seem a no-brainer to go from Delta Platinum to Delta Diamond. Yet, in this video, Jenny Rae explains why she purposely levels off at Delta Platinum vs going for the top tier of Delta Diamond. If you are a Delta frequent flyer at the Delta Platinum tier, pay special attention as this might make sense for you as well!

Based on reports online, you should have a good chance of being approved for this card even with fair credit. I was able to find a few reports of people being approved with a credit score as low as 630.

Amex has a once-per-lifetime rule when it comes to earning the welcome bonus on a card. This means that no matter how long ago you previously earned the welcome bonus on the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold card, you wont be eligible to receive an intro bonus a second time.

Earning Points On Flights And Prepaid Hotels

While one might assume that the Delta co-branded card earns the most points possible for flights booked on Delta Air Lines, this is not so. The American Express Platinum Card earns 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel on up to $500,000 per calendar year, 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel and 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases, while the Delta Reserve card earns 3 miles per dollar on Delta purchases and 1 mile per dollar on all other eligible purchases.

American Express Membership Rewards points are flexible points that can be transferred to a number of airlines, including Delta SkyMiles, so you could think of the Platinum Card as earning an effective 5 SkyMiles per dollar on Delta purchases. However, the option value of transferring to additional international airlines for premium cabin travel redemptions makes Membership Rewards a more valuable points currency than Delta SkyMiles. If you purchase Delta tickets with your Platinum card, you earn more miles per dollar on your Delta spending and you earn points in a more flexible and more valuable point currency.

Is Delta Skymiles® Platinum Worth It

The CardName was made for the regular Delta customer. The card offers miles that you can use to board Delta flights, but what really makes this card stand out is the opportunity to earn some bonus status miles, MQMs in Delta-speak. Any frequent flyer knows that status miles are as good as gold.

If you regularly fly Delta you may find having the CardName will make travel that much easier, and that offsetting the annual fee will be a cinch thanks to its numerous travel perks.

Survey Methodology: CardRatings commissioned Op4G in September and October 2021 to conduct surveys among 1,524 cardholders nationwide. CardRatings website analytics from Jan. 1, 2021-Aug. 31, 2021 were used to determine a selection of the most popular cards and additional cards were included to add survey breadth. Responses to each of nine questions were given on a scale of 1-10 and respondents’ scores were then averaged under broad topics. To determine the overall score, responses from questions 1-8 were summed and the answer to “How likely are you to recommend this card to a friend, coworker or family member?” was double weighted. “Current Scores” reflect scores from the most recent survey “Past Scores ” are the scores averaged over each prior year the card has been surveyed. “Past Scores” indicates a card has only been surveyed in one prior year.

The Delta cards free baggage credit alone could save you hundreds of dollars in airline fees if youre a heavy traveler. But are those savings high enough to make it a better pick than the rewards-rich Platinum card?

It depends on how often you fly Delta and whether or not you plan to use the card for other purchases. For many travelers, the Platinum card is a better bet. For example, Platinum cardholders get 5 membership rewards points on flights booked directly with an airline, while Delta SkyMiles Gold cardholders get just 2 miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases.
