What Are The Main Differences Between The Delta Skymiles Gold Amex And The Delta Skymiles Platinum Amex Cards
The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card offers several additional benefits over the Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex card.
Despite having a higher annual fee of $250, it offers a larger welcome bonus and a free companion certificate each year you renew the card. And if earning elite status is important to you, Delta SkyMiles Platinum cardholders can earn bonus Medallion Qualification Miles after making a certain amount of eligible purchases during a calendar year.
Advantages Of The Delta Skymiles Gold Credit Card
Nothing squashes the buzz of an exciting trip quite like having to fork out $30 each way to check a bag. On a single round trip, thats $60 per person. That means having the Delta SkyMiles Gold credit card saves you $120 on two round trips a year or just one round trip with a companion, which is already more than the cards annual fee.
Better still, the free checked bag perk isnt tied directly to the card. Instead, its associated with your Delta SkyMiles number, which means that even flights booked with a different credit card are eligible. Thats an important consideration if you hold a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, which earns 3 points per dollar on all travel purchases or even 5 total points on air travel purchased through Ultimate Rewards , compared to 2 miles per dollar on the Delta Gold card.
Other advantages of the Delta SkyMiles Gold card include a statement credit of 20% back on eligible Delta in-flight purchases, such as food, beverages, audio headsets and more, Main Cabin 1 priority boarding, no foreign transaction fees and car rental loss and damage insurance**.
Plus, if you plan to spend $10,000 or more on the card in a calendar year, youll have a $100 Delta flight credit to look forward to as well. While $10,000 may sound like a lot of money to spend on a credit card, its actually only $834 a month.

Other Considerations For Delta Skymiles Gold American Express Card
There are many factors to consider when choosing a credit card. One of these is how you will use it in the future. There are different drawbacks and advantages of using the Delta SkyMiles Gold Card as your first and only card compared to using it as an additional credit card.
Things to Consider if This Will Be Your First or Only Credit Card
If you are thinking of using the Delta SkyMiles Gold Card as your first or only card, consider the purchases you will be making. You can use it at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets to earn double miles. However, it has a high APR. You can make this card work well for you if you can pay your bills in full monthly. Another option is to not use it for big purchases if you cant pay it off regularly. If you travel, you can use this for international purchases without worrying about foreign transaction fees. You can also save money as it offers a free checked bag for each flight.
Things to Consider if This Will Be an Additional Card in Your Wallet
MoneyGeeks methodology and review process includes the collection of information from the Consumer Finance Protection Bureaus database and the credit card companies to ensure accuracy of data. In evaluating each company, standardized points based on fees, bonuses and rewards are used. The process is done regularly to reflect the changes in credit card details and offers.

Is The Delta Skymiles Gold American Express Card Worth It
The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card could be well worth its annual fee if you fly with Delta even once a year.
After all, this card comes with a free checked bag on Delta flights for the cardholder and up to eight guests on the same reservation. If you are a family of four traveling, this benefit can be worth up to $240 for a round-trip flight.
When you consider the generous welcome offer and the fact you earn 2x miles on U.S supermarket purchases and dining in addition to Delta purchases, this card can make sense for almost anyone who flies with the airline.
Still Not Sure About This Card Consider These Options
Frequent travelers who think basic flight perks are enough and are more concerned about earning miles may find the Delta SkyMiles Gold Card a great option. However, other users may have other priorities when choosing the best credit card. Other types of credit cards, such as cash back cards, offer more rewards for consistent use. If you plan on using the credit card for your business, then a business credit card is more suitable for you.

Rewards And Welcome Offer
The Delta SkyMiles Gold is a good introduction to airline cards and their unique rewards structure. Airline card rewards are brand-specific and a lot of the real value comes from incentives such as free checked bags, flight credits or in-flight discounts.
That’s why we don’t generally recommend using an airline co-branded credit card as your go-to for most spending. Usually a comparable card will get you a better rewards rate, and in a currency that’s more flexible . Delta’s frequent flyers will be able to derive enough value in many cases, though.
As a travel rewards credit card, the Delta SkyMiles Gold’s rewards structure doesn’t stack up well against the competition. You’ll earn 2x Delta SkyMiles at restaurants , 2x miles at U.S. supermarkets, 2x miles on Delta purchases, and 1x miles on all other eligible purchases. Those rates are lower than you’d find with comparable cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , which offers 5x points on travel booked through Chase and 3x points on dining.
The Delta SkyMiles Gold has a competitive but not spectacular welcome offer. Cardholders need to spend $2,000 in the first six months to earn 65,000 bonus miles . Though the payout is average, this welcome offer has a much lower spending threshold when compared to other airline card welcome offers.

Our Take On The Delta Gold Skymiles American Express Card
Huge Delta fan or not, the Delta Gold Card is one of the best travel rewards credit cards that doesn’t charge an annual fee for the first year of card membership. In our mind, it’s one of the best co-branded airline credit cards, period.
It allows you to earn a big SkyMiles welcome bonus without paying anything out of pocket in your first year. It essentially lets you try it before you buy it.
Even if you decided to cancel your Delta Gold card before your second year of card membership, the bonus SkyMiles you earned would be yours to keep. They would not be clawed back once you closed the card.

But one thing to consider with the Delta SkyMiles Gold card is that it isn’t necessarily the best option for your everyday spending. There are cards that are more rewarding for your everyday spending, like the non-Delta American Express® Gold Card.
Earning points that are not tied to one specific airline is typically a better idea in the long run. It helps keep your points diversified and they will simply lose value at a slower rate.
But if you want a card that will cover the cost of checked bags and allows you to earn a ton of Delta SkyMiles that won’t cost you anything out of pocket in year one, you simply won’t find a better option than the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card.

Delta Gold Amex Welcome Bonus: 65000 Skymiles
For applications through November 9, 2022, the Gold Delta SkyMiles Amex has a welcome offer of 65,000 bonus SkyMiles after spending $2,000 within the first six months. I value SkyMiles at 1.1 cents each, so that bonus is worth ~$715, which is solid.
The welcome bonus on the card is once in a lifetime, so its not available to you if you currently have the card, or if youve had the card in the past. However, note that you can get each flavor of the Delta Amex card, so you are eligible for this card if youve had the Platinum or Reserve, or if youve had any of the business versions.
