How To Buy Physical Gold

If you decide that investing in physical gold is the right move for you, here are some things to keep in mind.

1. Find a reputable dealer. From working with pushy salespeople to falling victim to scams, navigating the world of buying and selling gold can be sketchy. Sellers can inflate their products value, or use persuasion tactics to create a sense of urgency to buy immediately. Doing some homework ahead of time can help you avoid a bad investment.

You can use the National Futures Associations Background Affiliation Status Information Center to check on a firm or individuals background.

2. Watch out for fees. Gold dealers typically charge more than golds spot price, or the price at which gold trades on a commodities exchange. This premium typically consists of a dealers fee and manufacturing and distribution charges.

3. Find secure storage. People joke about burying gold for a reason: Its valuable, and because it’s a physical commodity, people may try to steal it. Its important to anticipate storing your gold somewhere safe, whether that is a literal safe or a safety deposit box at a bank. Storing gold safely can get expensive. Depending on their size, safety deposit boxes at a bank can run from $30 to a couple hundred dollars a year.

4. Consider purchasing insurance. Insurance is an additional cost of owning physical gold. If you purchase insurance, be sure your policy covers the exact type of asset you have.

When Is The Gold Price The Strongest

It can be difficult to predict the next major rally in gold as it is strongly driven by sentiment. Gold does well in period of high uncertainty, a shifting inflationary environment and during periods of currency debasement however, historically, there have been high and low seasonal period in the gold market. Historically, September is golds strongest month. Many western jeweler start to build their gold inventories during this time to prepare for the holiday season. The next strongest month is January, which traditionally sees strong buying among Eastern nations ahead of the Lunar New Year. The worst month has historically been March, April and then June.

How Gold Stocks Perform Vs The Gold Price

In general, if you think gold has room to run, history would say you’re better off owning gold stocks than the yellow metal itself. However, if you think gold could be nearing a top, you’re probably better off holding gold than gold stocks, based on past performance.

Consider, from the gold price bottom in late 2015 through the August 2020 peak, GLD, the SPDR Gold Shares ETF tracking the commodity’s price rose 94%. Meanwhile, the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF rose 244% over the same span. That reflects the dramatic corporate earnings improvement thanks to the higher price of gold. Improved earnings, in turn, allow mining companies to increase dividends as the price of gold rises.

Sometimes corporate dynamics and changing perceptions of them can take precedence. Even as the price of gold came down a bit, Franco-Nevada stock broke out to a record high in late December 2019. Newmont stock hit a multiyear high in that time frame.

Still, gold stock investors can never let down their guard. The descent for gold mining stocks from the 2011 price peak was much rougher than for the metal. To the trough in late 2015, GLD, which tracks the price of gold, tumbled 46%. Meanwhile, GDX, the ETF tracking gold miners, cratered close to 80%.

Go For Gold Not For Broke

No matter your view of whether the price of gold is a good bet, it makes sense to subject investment decisions in gold stocks or an ETF tracking gold or gold stocks to the same rigorous process as regular stock buys. That means waiting for a proper buy point and a buy signal.

The charts of gold stocks like NEM and GDX no longer look constructive. While FNV, IBD’s top-rated gold stock, looks more solid, all gold stocks are pretty closely tied to the fortunes of GLD, which has fallen well below its 200-day moving average. Prospects look somewhat brighter for the iShares Silver Trust ETF that tracks the silver price. SLV has bounced above its 200-day line and is about 6% below its recent buy point. Silver has both precious metal and industrial metal characteristics.

How Is The Live Spot Gold Price Calculated

Every precious metals market has a corresponding benchmark price that is set on a daily basis. These benchmarks are used mostly for commercial contracts and producer agreements. These benchmarks are calculated partly from trading activity in the spot market.

The spot price is determined from trading activity on Over-The-Counter decentralized markets. An OTC is not a formal exchange and prices are negotiated directly between participants with most of the transaction taking place electronically. Although these arent regulated, financial institutions play an important role, acting as market makers, providing a bid and ask price in the spot market.

How Much Gold Should Be In Your Portfolio

3 Top Gold ETFs

Your portfolio should be structured in a way that helps you reach your long-term goals. Gold might have a place. However, many experts warn that you should be wary of how much gold to include in your portfolio. One rule of thumb is to limit gold to no more than 5% to 10% of your portfolio. Depending on your situation and your risk tolerance, you might be more comfortable with a bigger or smaller share of gold in your portfolio.

How Much Should You Invest In Gold

Gold can be a volatile investment, so you shouldn’t put a large amount of your assets into it — it’s best to keep it to less than 10% of your overall stock portfolio. The real benefit, for new and experienced investors alike, comes from the diversification that gold can offer. Once you’ve built your gold position, make sure to periodically balance your portfolio so that your relative exposure to it remains the same.

What Is The Difference Between An Ounce And A Troy Ounce When Looking At A Gold Chart

A troy ounce is used specifically in the weighing and pricing of precious metals and its use dates back to the Roman Empire when currencies were valued in weight. The process was carried over to the British Empire where one pound sterling was worth one troy pound of silver. The U.S. Mint adopted the troy ounce system in 1828.

A troy ounce is about slightly heavier than an imperial ounce by about 10%. An imperial ounce equals 28.35 grams, while a troy ounce is equal to 31.1 grams.

Why Are Gold Prices Always Fluctuating

How To Invest In Gold (4 Ways)

The price of gold is in a constant state of flux, and it can move due to numerous influences. Some of the biggest contributors to fluctuations in the gold price include:

  • Central bank activity
  • Jewelry demand
  • Investment demand

Currency markets can have a dramatic effect on the gold price. Because gold is typically denominated in U.S. Dollars, a weaker dollar can potentially make gold relatively less expensive for foreign buyers while a stronger dollar can potentially make gold relatively more expensive for foreign buyers. This relationship can often be seen in the gold price. On days when the dollar index is sharply lower, gold may be moving higher. On days when the dollar index is stronger, gold may be losing ground.

Interest rates are another major factor on gold prices. Because gold pays no dividends and does not pay interest, the gold price may potentially remain subdued during periods of high or rising interest rates. On the other hand, if rates are very low, gold may potentially benefit as it keeps the opportunity cost of holding gold to a minimum. Of course, gold could also move higher even with high interest rates, and it could move lower even during periods of ultra-low rates.

What Is Gold Spot Price

The spot price of gold is the most common standard used to gauge the going rate for a troy ounce of gold. The price is driven by speculation in the markets, currency values, current events, and many other factors. Gold spot price is used as the basis for most bullion dealers to determine the exact price to charge for a specific coin or bar. These prices are calculated in troy ounces and change every couple of seconds during market hours.

Streaming And Royalty Companies

For most investors, buying stock in a streaming and royalty company is probably the best all-around option for investing in gold. These companies provide miners with cash up front for the right to buy gold and other metals from specific mines at reduced rates in the future. They are like specialty finance companies that get paid in gold, allowing them to avoid many of the headaches and risks associated with running a mine.

Benefits of such companies includes widely diversified portfolios, contractually built-in low prices that lead to wide in good years and bad, and exposure to gold price changes . That said, none of the major streaming companies has a pure gold portfolio, with silver the most common added exposure. So you’ll need to do a little homework to fully understand what commodity exposures you’ll get from your investment. And while streaming companies avoid many of the risks of running a mine, they don’t completely sidestep them: If a mine isn’t producing any gold, there’s nothing for a streaming company to buy.

Still Not A Bad Option

All of that said, investors with more of a value bent might still find Wheaton attractive. Yes, its silver exposure has it out of step with investors today, but that could easily change. Precious metals are commodities prone to swift and dramatic price swings. It is still benefiting from extremely low gold prices just like its peers, and relatively out-of-favor silver could turn into a net benefit at some point — in fact, the history of the two metals suggests that at some point it will. If you are looking to add some precious metals exposure to increase your portfolio diversification, don’t dismiss Wheaton. The extra silver exposure, in the long run, could be a hidden benefit.

Gold Price Factors Faq

The price of gold seems to move around quite a bit. What are some things that cause changes in the gold price?

Gold is a commodity that can have very rapid price changes during periods of high volatility and can also have very little price movement during quiet periods of low volatility. There are many different things that can potentially affect the price of gold. These issues include but are not limited to: supply and demand, currency fluctuations, inflation risks, geopolitical risks, and asset allocations.

Gold is viewed by some as a safe-haven asset for it is one of the only assets with virtually no counter-party risks . This is why golds value may potentially rise during times of economic instability or geopolitical uncertainty.

Isnt the price of gold too volatile for most investors?

Gold can, just like any other commodity, become volatile with rapid price changes and swings. The gold market can also, however, go through extended periods of quiet trading and price activity. Today many financial experts see gold as being in a long-term uptrend and that may potentially be one reason why investors are buying gold.
