The Origin Of The Presidents Watch

Rolex Day Date 40 President Rose Gold White Dial Mens Watch 228235 Review | SwissWatchExpo

With its exclusive use of precious metals, the Rolex Day-Date quickly became a status watch sought-after by some of the worlds most influential leaders and visionaries. It exudes power and success, so it seems only natural that the Day-Date would become the watch of choice among many American Presidents.

While the watch is formally named the Rolex Day-Date, it has also become known as the Rolex President or Rolex Presidential a nickname that originated due to the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson famously wearing a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date while in office.

Its often incorrectly stated that Dwight D. Eisenhower was the man behind the Rolex President nickname as he was gifted a gold Rolex to celebrate the brands 150,000th chronometer. However, the watch was actually an 18k yellow gold Datejust, not a Day-Date. Eisenhower was famously photographed wearing his gold Rolex on the cover of TIME magazine. However, since this magazine shoot took place in 1952 and the Day-Date was not released until 1956, it is impossible for Eisenhowers Rolex to be from the Day-Date collection.

JFK also reportedly owned a Rolex Day-Date, which was given to him by none other than Marylin Monroe. The story behind the actual watch which was inscribed with Jack with love as always from Marilyn May 29th, 1962 still remains a mystery. Rumor has it JFK never kept the watch however, it recently sold at 2005 auction for $120,000.

Since Its Creation The Day

Instantly recognizable, its unique design has forged its identity. At its launch, the Day-Date was the only watch with a semi-circular window at 12 oclock displaying the day of the week spelt out in full. With its specially-designed President bracelet available only in precious metal gold or platinum it is the watch of prestige par excellence.

Ticking Away Since 201: Rolex Day

Rolex has used their in-house caliber 3255 in the Day-Date since 2015. This movement is protected by 14 patents. The manufacturer’s engineers reworked and optimized more than 90% of the caliber’s components. For example, they shrunk the barrel’s thickness by 50%, thus making room for a higher-capacity spring.

Thanks to Rolex’s highly efficient Chronergy escapement, the movement has an impressive power reserve of 70 hours. This means you can set the watch aside over the weekend and it will still be ticking come Monday morning. The Chronergy escapement is made of a nickel-phosphorus alloy and improves upon the conventional Swiss anchor escapement. Thanks to this material, the movement is not affected by magnetic fields. The manufacturer also claims that this escapement makes the watch 15% more efficient.

At the core of the movement is the classic Rolex blue Parachrom hairspring, which ticks at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It is made from a niobium-zirconium alloy and, like the escapement, is resistant to the effects of magnetic fields. According to the manufacturer, it is also up to ten times more precise than other movements when subjected to jolts. Furthermore, the balance spring’s final coil is raised and oval-shaped. This detail is known as the “Breguet overcoil” and helps improve the movement’s accuracy.

How Much Does A Rolex Day

Vintage Day-Dates from the 1970s change hands for as little as 8,100 USD. If you’re looking for an Oysterquartz Day-Date or a Day-Date Bark from the late 70s and early 80s, be prepared to spend some 3,000 to 4,000 USD more.

Models from the current collection require a significantly larger investment. The 40-mm white gold ref. 228239 is one such watch, with the blue dial version costing over 50,000 USD. If you’re looking for a slightly smaller watch, the yellow gold Day-Date ref. 128238 measures 36 mm in diameter, has a champagne dial, and requires an investment of around 48,000 USD.

Fans of platinum should take a look at the ref. 21820. This 41-mm timepiece features a polished bezel and changes hands for over 80,000 USD in mint condition. Those who want to push the envelope for a highly exclusive Rolex model will love the ref. 228396TBR. This model is especially striking thanks to its icy blue dial and diamond-studded bezel, and has a hefty price tag of around 178,000 USD.

Although the days may be the same wherever you are in the world, they are written differently depending on the language. Using all writing systems Latin, Arabic, Cyrillic, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese ideograms and even the Ge’ez alphasyllabary used in the Horn of Africa the Day-Date expresses the cultural identity of its wearer. It is a truly international, universal and personal watch.

    Everose Gold

Everose gold is Rolexs exclusive, patented pink gold alloy. They make it at their own foundry, so they control the standards entirely. Rolexs Everose gold is very special. Due to the alloy metals used, the watch will never fade, as many other rose gold alloys do. Moreover, it has a special pinkish, bright glow to it that is unique to Rolexs Everose gold. Its incredibly beautiful, and this watch is made entirely from solid 18k Everose gold.

    40mm Case

The Oyster Perpetual Case is 40mm across the round of the case and 47.4mm from lug to lug.Because of the pivoted end link of the new-style ceramic pin President bracelet, the case doesnt project beyond the lugs as it did with the Day-Date II. This means the lug to lug measurement is true and it makes for a more elegant integration of the bracelet and case.

The timepiece is also relatively slim. It is 12mm thick, and thanks to the conical fluted bezel, it will slide under any dress cuff with ease.

As for the case band, it is smooth, curvaceous, and graceful, unlike the square and sheer super case. Moreover, it is high polish so the sheen is absolutely breathtaking.

The case band is caped with nothing but a gold twin lock crown. The two dots below the Rolex crown indicate this is a twin lock screw-down crown. Thus, it ensures 100 meters of water resistance.

    Dates And Days Are Essential

HANS WILSDORF The Day-Date was originally designed to be a precious instrument for everyday use. Thanks to a watchmaking prowess that was unprecedented at the time, it offered a solution to those requiring complete mastery of their personal calendar: the Day-Date was the first self-winding, waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date and the day of the week spelt out in full in two separate windows. Both change simultaneously at midnight. This revolutionary switch continues to fascinate, nearly seven decades later.

    Rolex Day

The beauty of the Rolex Day-Date is that it stands to hold its value better than any other watch in the Rolex catalog assuming that you pick up one on the secondary market for a good price. The sole use of precious metals, combined with the series reputation for excellence and luxury, cement the Day-Dates place as a serious investment.

While the Rolex Day-Date does command a higher price than other Rolex watches that offer steel or a combination of steel and gold , your money will certainly not go to waste. Beyond the value of it as a Rolex watch which is certainly not something to overlook, your timepiece will always be worth a significant chunk of change due to the value of the solid gold or platinum that is used in its construction.

Backed by the promise of quality Rolex craftsmanship, any Day-Date will maintain a precise reading for decades, and these iconic luxury watches have all the makings of heirloom pieces to be enjoyed for generations. The Rolex Day-Date offers a price point for virtually every budget. While the sky is the limit when it comes to the price range for this celebrated luxury icon, the most affordable models can be found on the pre-owned market for around $5k and prices go all the way up to well-above $30,000.

An Investment In The Day And Date

Rolex unveiled the original Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956. It was the first wristwatch to ever feature both the date and the unabbreviated day of the week on its dial, thus underscoring the Genevan company’s role as an innovator in the industry. Furthermore, Rolex released this model alongside the then-new “President” bracelet. This bracelet combines the Oyster bracelet’s three-piece link look with the hemispherical-shaped links made famous by the Datejust and its Jubilee bracelet.

The Datejust debuted seven years before the Day-Date, and the two models are strikingly similar. Both have an Oyster case, a narrow fluted bezel, a simple dial, and a Cyclops lens above the date display at 3 o’clock. However, thanks to its day display at 12 o’clock and President bracelet, there’s no mistaking the Day-Date for its closely-related cousin. Another difference is the range of materials, as the Day-Date is only available in precious metals like platinum and yellow, white, or rose gold.

The Rolex Day-Date has appeared in all sorts of configurations over the years. From different dial colors and designs and varying case sizes to models with or without diamonds, there’s something for everyone. Watches with a 36-mm case leave an especially classic impression, while the 40-mm editions exude a somewhat sportier feel.

The History Of The Rolex Day

The Rolex Day-Dates legacy began in 1956. The first references produced within the series were the 6510 and 6511, which featured the now-iconic President bracelet, a fluted bezel, and a 36mm Oyster case. These references were the first watches in the world to display both a date of the month and the day of the week, spelled out in full through windows in the dial. As a member of the Oyster Perpetual series, the 6510 and 6511 also sported Rolexs patented waterproof Oyster case and self-winding Perpetual movement.

The first generation set the wheels in motion. It didnt take long for the series to evolve to include a broader selection of dial colors, metal options, bezels, bracelet types, and movements. The rest of the Rolex Day-Date collection was introduced as follows:

    1959: 180x Series cal. 1555, later 15561977: 180xx Series cal. 30551977: OysterQuartz Series cal. 5055, later 53551988: 182xx Series cal. 31552000: 118xxx Series cal. 31552008: Day-Date II with 41mm case cal. 31562015: Day-Date 40 cal. 32552019: 1282xx Series cal. 3255
