American Express Rose Gold vs. Gold – Hands-On, Up Close Color Comparison and Unboxing

They say looks aren’t everything but let’s be honest, it’s hard to ignore the striking American Express® Gold Card in Rose Gold.

Originally available in late 2018 , the card color is now back by popular demand for new cardholders. Amex says that in a recent survey, they found that three in five consumers would be interested in choosing their own card design.

With its pinkish gold hue and metallic texture, I’d argue Amex’s Gold card in Rose Gold is one of the best-looking credit cards out there. Thankfully, the card is great on the inside too. It earns top marks for dining and supermarkets, earning a spot on our lists of best cards for both categories.

American Express Gold Card Vs American Express Green Card*

With an annual fee of $150, the American Express® Green Card is one of the starter Membership Rewards cards. It earns 3 points per dollar on restaurant purchases, 3 points per dollar on travel including flights, hotels, transit, taxis, tours, and ridesharing services and 1 point per dollar on other purchases. The American Express Green Card could be a better fit than the Amex Gold if more of your budget is spent on getting around, particularly for those who commute and road-trip more than they fly.

Is The Amex Gold Card Right For You

I got the AMEX ROSE GOLD CARD! *UNBOXING*

For the right cardholder, the Amex Gold is absolutely worth it. The card offers the highest combined rewards rate you can find on both U.S. supermarket and restaurant purchases making it ideal for foodies and household shoppers. Plus, it comes with several travel protections and credits that can help offset its high annual fee.

If you take full advantage of the Amex Gold cards rewards and benefits, the cards value should easily eclipse the annual fee, adding up to over $500 in value.

Evaluating the Amex Golds value relative to its annual fee, personal finance writer Nicole Dieker put it like this: What you might not realize is that the credits, points and benefits offered by the American Express Gold Card can more than offset the annual fee especially if you use your Amex Gold Card wisely.

Heres a quick look at just how much value the cards perks alone can offer the ideal user:

Does Amex Gold Have A Spending Limit

No, the Amex Gold doesnt have a preset spending limit. No Preset Spending Limit means your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

As a result, the Amex Gold Card doesnt have a credit utilization rate on credit reports like many rewards credit cards. But, cardholders will need to pay their balance in full each month to keep their account in good standing and potentially improve their credit score.

For more expensive months, cardholders may want to call American Express to pre-authorize large purchases that may trigger a card fraud alert.

When To Go For The Amex Gold

The American Express® Gold Card is a great option for these reasons:

  • Want to earn bonus Membership Rewards on dining and grocery purchases
  • Can earn bonus points on flights booked directly from the airline or AmexTravel.com
  • Prefer dining credits to travel credits
  • Wont regularly use the Platinum Card unique card benefits
  • Desire a lower annual fee

The Amex Gold doesnt have as many travel benefits but that can be okay if you dont need complimentary airport lounge access or Global Entry/TSA PreCheck.

This card is also a better option if you dont travel frequently. You will most likely have an easier time maximizing the Amex Gold dining perks versus the Amex Platinum travel benefits.

Is The Amex Gold Card A Credit Card Or A Charge Card

Technically, it was long considered a charge card. The various American Express cards that have just a color as the name were all technically charge products.

Unlike a typical credit card, the Gold Card has No Preset Spending Limit, which allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all of them, using a feature called Pay Over Time. Your spending limit is flexible and may vary over time based on things like your purchase, payment, and credit history.

The distinction is also important because Amex has a interesting product limit per person.

You can have 5 Amex credit cards but up to 10 Amex cards that were formerly classified as charge cards. Since its very easy to run out of credit card slots in your American Express profile, its good to know that even if you are at your 5 credit card max, you could still get an Amex Gold card.

Its also important to know that American Express has moved away from the concept of charge cards for cardholders. All cards formerly referred to as charge cards now feature a Pay Over Time APR feature to make them function similar to traditional credit cards.

Traditionally, the Amex portfolio of charge cards were cards in which you could not carry a balance and had to pay all charges in full each month. But with Pay Over Time now built into the charge cards by default, this no longer really applies. Unlike typical credit cards, these Cards allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all of them.

What Is Rose Gold And Why Is My Amex Card This Color

Balance

Unless youve been hiding under a rock for the past few years youve probably heard about rose gold as a trendy color. It first hit the mainstream as a color choice for the iPhone 6S in 2015. While its easy to dismiss it as just a shade of pink, rose gold is an actual thing.

Rose gold is an alloy consisting of 24-karat yellow gold, copper and sometimes silver. The amount of copper determines the amount of rose color. Its not a new color it dates back to the early 19th century and was used by Faberge in his famous eggs.

However, its only recently that the color has once again become a fashion trend. Heres a Buzzfeed article about 24 Rose Gold items you need to have. If youre a Disney fan, a set of Rose Gold Mickey Ears are still a treasured commodity, as theyre on the 3rd edition since the 2017 release.

For points and miles collectors, the most likely place youll find anything Rose Gold colored is in your wallet with an American Express Rose Gold Card.

In 2018, American Express relaunched the Gold card with new benefits and a higher annual fee. As a part of that rollout, the new metal card was offered in a Gold or Rose Gold version.

Eventually, AMEX stopped letting people choose the Rose Gold version. Until recently, the only choice was a regular Gold card.

AMEX apparently was getting plenty of requests for the return of Rose Gold and per their own surveys.

Does The Gold Card Have A Preset Spending Limit

With the Pay Over Time feature, as we mentioned above, the Amex Gold card now functions more like a credit card. But, as it is still technically a charge card, you wont be granted a specific preset spending limit. Instead, your monthly spend patterns will dictate your actual limit each month. If you consistently spend a certain amount month, youll be able to gradually spend more than that with on-time payments. Your credit profile may dictate a certain cutoff point, but you can generally charge more on a Amex Gold card than on a traditional credit card.

Why The Amex Gold Card Is Worth It

It goes without saying that theres no one size fits all card strategy out there. However, among premium rewards cards, I think the Amex Gold Card is as close to that as it gets. Everyone has to eat, and the Amex Gold Card rewards that generously, whether you like to dine at restaurants, shop at supermarkets, or both.

Amex Membership Rewards points are extremely valuable, and earning 4x points on restaurants and U.S. supermarkets is a return thats not offered by any other card.

Admittedly the card does have a $250 annual fee, which might be a deterrent to some. However, that fee is potentially almost entirely offset by the up to $240 in annual benefits you can get, between the $10 monthly dining benefit and the $10 monthly Uber Cash benefit:

    • The monthly Uber Cash benefit is useful whether youre booking a rideshare or ordering food via Uber Eats
    • The $10 dining benefit can be used in a variety of ways I think its easiest to max out with Grubhub, but there are other options as well

This is a card where I think the perks more or less offset the annual fee, and then the 4x points in two popular categories is the icing on the cake. For anyone who spends a decent amount on food, this really supercharges your points earning potential.
