Gold Panning In Michigan

Gold was first discovered in Michigan in 1881 and commercial mining started soon afterwards. But now most of Michigan’s gold is fine placer. Consequently, a modern commercial mining operation would not be profitable. Recreational prospecting, however, often proves rewarding. If you know where to look then flour, placer, and even lode gold can be captured in Michigan.

Panning for gold in a land not owned by you is a serious business and it has a lot of rules and regulations you need to abide by.

I recommend reading Prospecting for Gold in the United State, a publication by the US Geological Survey. It gives you an overall view and history of gold panning in the U.S. and some of the rules governing it.

Bedrock Map For Gold Panning

It is a good start to look at a bedrock map from your location to find the right conditions for gold. Different bedrock brings with it different amounts of gold. Minerals that occur most frequently with Gold include quartz, copper, sulfurchisel, lead, magnetite, molybdenum.

Gold can occur in many different rocks some are more interesting than others. The most gold-bearing stone is volcanite, and mostly so acidic volcanite. Quartz sections in the hillsides can be interesting to explore, ideally substantial quartz sections with various colours. Other places to explore are fault cracks and traces of geological activity in the area. All mountains have undergone many changes through millions of years, so what was once a riverbed can today be a mountain peak.

Black Sand And Gold In Streams

How to Pan for Gold with Parker Schnabel

If you find black sand, you are on the right track. The black sand is heavier than ordinary sand and stone and sinks and stops just as gold does. It doesnt have to be gold where there is black sand, but it is a good indication that you have come to a good spot.

If you have dug for a while and washed several pans and have not found either black sand or gold, then you move a little bit and try again.

The states streams that contain placer gold are also important for the plant and animal communities they support. A formal HPA is not required for recreational panning and prospecting if you use a gold pan, mini-rocker box, or non- motorized, small sluice box. Where To Pan For Gold In A River

The currents of a river vary throughout the year. This is helpful to the prospector as the raging floods of spring carry away lighter minerals while leaving heavier minerals behind. Panning within rapids, though, is not the best place to find potentially gold-bearing sediments. Panning in river beds that have previously been exploited for gravel deposits is also not recommended, as heavy minerals are mixed with lighter minerals during excavations.

Small streams are as good as larger rivers as long as heavy sediment traps occur within them or along their margins. For practical reasons, panning in depths greater than knee-deep is not usually successful. Look for streams with lots of cobbles and sands in then.

A promising stream for panning

The optimal position and depth for panning.

The best panning traps are found along a river where the water runs rapidly, then calms after passing over a small rapid or waterfall. The water of a river running through a narrow canyon will calm as it enters a larger valley, and when this happens, the heavy minerals will be the first to settle out. Small calm pools with heavy mineral concentrations are often found below minor rapids, and these are the best place to start prospecting.

Beginner’s Luck Improves With Tips From A Pro

Gold Panner Stock Photo

Just like fishing, no matter how much you know about the sport, sometimes you catch something and sometimesit gets away from you. Some rivers are just as hard for the “pro” as for the amateur when it comes to locating color. Getting that “eye” for where to pan is a big help, but if there isn’t much gold around, thenat least have a picnic and nice day outdoors. Whether you locate any color in your gold pan as a beginner, remember, the first rule for the successful amateur prospector is . . . patience. As a matter of fact, so is the second rule, the third rule, the forth rule and . . . good luck in the real world!

How To Find Gold In Streams And Creeks

Start by looking for a stream with some incline, preferably coming from a mountainside. You can start the search at the bottom where the water flattens out, and the flow of the water is not that strong. You may have to dig down a bit because the gold is heavy and will sink until it stops against more compact clay or ground. Old, dried out waterways are excellent places to start, there may be areas of erosion material that contain Gold. Gold is more massive than the surrounding minerals and is therefore continually descending further and further down.

Gold in the water accumulates where the water flows changes and . Gold that falls into a crack in the stone will not escape by the force of the water. For example, dig under a rock or where there are cracks in the bedrock.

Today, you can visit these historic sites and try your hand at gold panning at South Pass City State Historic Site.

Clean Out Your Snuffer Bottle And Enjoy Your Gold

Once I have extracted all the gold I can from the black sand, it’s time to clean up the contents of my sniffer bottle. I clean out my pan and then dump the contents of the sniffer bottle into it. I then again use the magnet to separate out the black sand that got sucked up with the gold. Then I suck the now clean gold back into the sniffer bottle and transfer it to a storage vial. The first photo shows one of my gold vials containing all the pickers, flakes and dust found from only one morning out on my secret little panning creek. Not bad for a morning’s work. Ok, so I’m not getting rich, but I am having a lot of fun. It’s also good exercise. And the gold adds up over time. With gold around $900 an ounce, it really starts adding up.Give gold panning a try. I’ll bet you’ll have lots of fun doing too. More information on gold panning and prospecting can be found on my web site at

Wash Out Lighter Material

How to Pan for Gold

Begin to tilt your pan forward as you rotate it and allow the lighter sand and gravel to wash out over the front edge. Be sure the riffles are at the front of the gold pan and the material is washing out over them so they can begin to help trap the gold. Keep doing this until only a small amount of the lighter material is left along with the heavier black sands.

Take the gold pan out of the stream but leave about an inch of water covering the material. Carefully swirl the material around in the pan. If you happen to see any gold at this point, carefully take them out. Place the pan back in the water and repeat this process, gently washing away any more of the lighter material left in the pan. Remove the pan keeping about an inch of water in it.

Panning For Gold Supplies And Tools

When you search for gold this way, you need some simple equipment. A Goldpan that you can buy anywhere. It doesnt have to be a very exceptional pan the simplest pan is good enough.

Of course, a shovel to dig with is required. When shovelling gravel into the pan, it can be useful to be able to from the finer sand. You can do that with a classifier. A colander with slightly larger holes works as well. Place the classifier over the pan as you pour gravel into it and you will not have to remove all large stones from the pan by hand.

Also, bring a magnifying glass or a loupe so you can study what it is that you have found. Some small jars with lids are good to have if you want to take home some gravel to pan at home. But remember which jar comes from which place if you find gold in it and want to go back to the same place.

Whether you find some gold or not, you will have a fun moment and an enjoyable nature experience. If you find large amounts of gold, you are welcome to contact me and tell me where . Good luck!

Narrowing Down Your Search For Gold Panning Sites

Obviously, gold can only be panned out of running water sources such as rivers, creeks, and streams. But even after narrowing your search that much, there are still thousands of miles worth of running water in just the gold-rich states.

To help narrow this down further, look for places where gold naturally gathers:

  • Bends The outer edges of bends in creeks and rivers collect gold deposits nicely because the water pushes it against the banks, then carries much of the lighter silt and sand away.
  • Sandbars For much the same reason that gold collects along river bends, it collects along the banks of sandbars, especially along the edge that catches the current.
  • Logs and debris Debris like logs wedged against river banks are an excellent place to pan for gold, as they act like a natural gold pan and follow the same basic principles.

Libby Creek Recreational Gold Panning Area Mt
