Xbox Live Gold’s Yearly Subscription Option Ended By Microsoft

Microsoft has officially ended the annual subscription option for Xbox Live Gold previously sold through the Microsoft Store. The $60 option was the one many Xbox One users would opt for since it subscribed them again to Xbox Live Gold for another year and meant you didn’t have to worry about it again for a while, and in the long run, it was more cost effective than buying three months or just one month every time. Those two options are currently the only ones available via the Microsoft Store right now, and no specific answer has been given as to why the change was made.

The change in Xbox Live Gold subscription options was noticed days ago when people realized the annual subscription choice was no longer available. It was unclear what that meant at the time and people weren’t sure if this was an error or a sign of changes to come.

In a statement shared with True Achievements, Microsoft confirmed it was not an error and that these are the two options available to Xbox Live subscribers now as far as the Microsoft Store’s options are concerned.

“At this time, Xbox has decided to remove the 12 months Xbox Live Gold SKU from the Microsoft online Store,” Microsoft said. “Customers can still sign up for a one month or three month Xbox Live Gold subscription online through the Microsoft Store.”

The next Xbox Series X event will take place on Thursday, but it’s supposed to only focus on games and nothing else, so don’t expect any Xbox Live revelations to come from the showcase.

Xbox Is Still Planning To Drop Live Gold Its Claimed

Microsoft said to be waiting until Game Pass reaches milestone subs

Chris Scullion

Microsoft is reportedly still planning to discontinue Xbox Live Gold and make online multiplayer free.

Thats according to journalist Jeff Grubb, who had made the same claim last year when Xbox Live Gold was still required for free-to-play games.

Grubbs original argument was that since Halo Infinites multiplayer was going to be free-to-play, that would only make sense if Xbox Live Gold was removed.

However, Microsoft then announced in April that Xbox Live Gold was no longer required to play free-to-play multiplayer games, leading some to believe that Gold would remain as a requirement for other games.

Yesterday, during his premium GrubbSnax show on Giant Bomb, Grubb addressed the story again and stated his belief that the plans to drop Gold were still on the table at Xbox.

In the past, Ive said Xbox Live Gold is going to go away, and when I started saying that it was when Xbox Live Gold was still required for free-to-play games, he explained.

And I knew for a fact that they were going to make a change before Halo Infinite, and I thought at least it would be dropped for free-to-play games because they werent going to charge people to play Halo on Xbox when they werent charging you to play it on PC or whatever.

Then they decided to raise the price and it looked weird, right? Why would they do that if they were going to get rid of Xbox Live Gold?

The Math Behind Why Microsoft Will Kill Xbox Live Gold For Game Pass

MS

The end seems nigh for Xbox Live Gold, the industry standard paid subscription service that motivated both Sony and Nintendo to offer their own paid offerings in the years after it debuted.

It may be the end of an era, but the alternative may end up making Microsoft even more money.

There are currently rumblings that Microsoft is going to kill off the concept of Xbox Live Gold entirely, the subscription service that usually retails for around $60 a year which gives players the simple ability to access access online multiplayer for Xbox games.

This has been accepted by gamers at this point, but its always been a little weird, considering that you are already paying your internet company money to access the internet, then youre paying Xbox to access online gameplay through that internet, while also paying for the games themselves, where as you dont have to do both for say, PC or mobile games.

While Microsoft would be loathe to give up an essentially standard $60 a year, every year, from consumers, the reason theyll likely do so is because the alternative is going to make them even more money.

Xbox Live Gold Changes: Free

Two decades on, and Xbox Live remains a staple of Microsoft’s gaming efforts, fundamental to its Xbox home consoles, and touching PCs and mobile too. That’s coupled with its long-running Xbox Live Gold subscription, a monthly membership unlocking its full suite of online features, including multiplayer, party chats, and exclusive bonuses. But the gaming network, and Xbox Live Gold, have undergone a significant revamp, laying out wide-reaching changes for all.

Here’s what’s just changed with Xbox Live and Xbox Live Gold in 2021.

I heard between 19 million and 23 million before E3, but theyre at least approaching 23 million, he said, and as we get close to Halo I bet they easily hit 23-25 million by the end of this year, and once theyre at 30 million theyll probably reassess what theyre doing with Xbox Live Gold.

probably still wont go away until its probably closer to something like 40-50 million active users for Game Pass, but all that stuff seems within their grasp right now as long as they keep up the marketing side and promotional side along with all these games that are getting announced.

Well see how it goes with Halo. If Halo is a big lightning rod for adoption for Game Pass then theyll know: Oh, and when Starfield comes thats going to be our next major lightning rod, and everything in between is going to be sort of connective tissue.

And as we get these big games coming out on a faster cadence and by 2023 they should be hitting a pretty fast cadence in terms of releasing games Game Pass should at that point really hit its stride and they should be well on their way to getting rid of Xbox Live Gold.

But the point is, for now, Xbox Live Gold is still sticking around, but its still on the roadmap to go away for good.

In January, Microsoft reversed plans to increase the price of a six-month Xbox Live Gold subscription by 50% to $60.

Last week, Microsoft announced that its xCloud game streaming service would arrive first as a free perk for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. The perk arrives in September for anyone subscribing to the $14.99 service. Could it be that Microsoft intends to roll the features of Xbox Live Gold into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate? That makes sense in terms of value, especially when you consider the extra features on offer for $5 more each month. Microsoft’s plans may become clear on Thursday, July 23, when the Xbox Series X games showcase is set to happen.

Overall, Xbox Live Gold certainly seems like a more valuable service than Microsofts separate Xbox Game Pass subscription, which costs $10 per month. It offers no discount for buying more time, still requires a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription to play games offline, and offers access to a library of games that includes many games that were previously offered for free via Games for Gold in the past.
