Golden Gate Bridge Tolls To Increase July 1

Traffic moves on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020.

SAN FRANCISCO The Golden Gate Bridge tolls will increase by $0.35 to $8.40 for FasTrak and by $0.20 to $8.80 for pay-as-you-go beginning Friday, July 1, according to a Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District press release.

The Toll Invoice rate will increase by $0.35 to $9.40. The carpool rate will increase by $0.35 to $6.40.

The increase comes as part of the districts five-year toll and transit fare programs, which went into effect July 1, 2019 and were projected to raise about $100 million over five years for the district as tolls are gradually increased each year.

The revenue from the new toll will allow the district to continue the Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry transit services, and to continue providing maintenance for the bridge, according to the press release. About 50% of the revenue collected through tolls subsidize the operations of the bus and ferry.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District is a special district of the State of California which operates and maintains the Golden Gate Bridge and two unified public transit systems Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry connecting the counties of Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, and Contra Costa.

Golden Gate Bridge Tolls To Reach $975 By 2023

The cost of going from the North Bay to San Francisco is about to get more expensive.

Starting in July, a southbound trip across the Golden Gate Bridge will rise from $7 to $7.35 for most drivers, with jumps of the same amount for another four years thereafter. Its part of a plan the bridge districts board of directors approved Friday morning to increase tolls over the iconic Bay Area structure to $8.75 by summer 2023 for the 85 percent of drivers who use a FasTrak transponder and $9.75 for out-of-state visitors and more casual bridge users.

The toll hikes are the result of a looming $75 million budget deficit that without an increase, the bridge district warned, would require cuts to its daily ferry and bus services. The board on Friday selected the option that will secure an estimated $100 million over the next five years to maintain transit at current levels, as well as allow possible future expansion of services.

The No. 1 mission of the Golden Gate Bridge is to keep traffic flowing over the bridge, said Rohnert Park Mayor Gina Belforte, one of three Sonoma County representatives on the bridge district board. The freeways are only so big, the bridge is only so big – we cant add a lane. So how do we keep that traffic going? We have to invest in our transit system.

I think theres an appetite for additional service, Mulligan said. This allows a little bit of additional funding flexibility to add more transit as its needed.

    Rental Cars And Tolls

This all depends on how your rental car company handles the Golden Gate Bridge Bridge tolls. Choosing neither option below will produce an expensive service charge on top of the toll, so be sure th research the issue with your car rental company. Your choices:

    1. They may offer you a program to pay the tolls through the rental company for a service fee. Compare the convenience of the service fee to the cost of setting up a license plate account . You may have to opt-in or opt-out of the toll plan to get the choice you want, so always ask the rental car company about it.

    2. If you opt out or the option is not offered you can open a License Plate Account as described below.

Extra Toll Fee Charges For Golden Gate Bridge On Car Rentals

Golden Gate Bridge District To Consider Toll Hikes

I am just putting this notice up to make people aware that if you have a rental car which uses the EToll you may be charged an extra fee on top of the $6.00 toll fee.

We were not informed about the black box when we collected the car, in fact we worked it out for ourselves that it had something to do with tolls, but didn’t have a clue how it worked or the fee charges.

Anyhow, you CANNOT pay the toll with cash and once your on the bridge, you’re on…you cannot turn around. We found it very confusing, as the signs on the bridge stated times etc, and my husband & I seemed to think the crossing was Toll free on the Sunday at that particular time when we crossed. Maybe someone from the area can clarify this???

If you cross the bridge from the north into San Francisco you will be charged, but from what I understand NOT if you cross heading north away from SF. Our rental company, Avis, charged us an extra $14.74 for their “convenience fee” plus the toll charge.

Like I said, I’m just making visitors aware of this extra charge.

well you are correct. Avis has signs posted on the e-toll tag on how to use that e-toll. It has to be pulled to be operational. There is a phone number posted on that that one can call AVIS to find out. There are signs before you cross the GG Bridge that the bridge does not have cash booths.

It can well be worth the hassle, but you need some digital guidance to create an effective letter explaining your situation.
