Garage Floor Coatings Vs Garage Floor Coverings

Garage floor coatings, typically available in either a paint or an epoxy, are more of a permanent solution than their floor covering counterparts. Garage floor paints give your floor a new look while protecting its surface from damages, oil spills, and moisture. Garage floor epoxy coatings, including the Colored Epoxies 1002 Clear Epoxy Resin Coating, use a chemical reaction to harden and create a long-lasting and protective finish.

To create a more durable finish, some garage floor paints like the KILZ Concrete and Garage Floor Paint add a small amount of epoxy to their formula.

Garage floor coverings, offered in floor mats or tiles, are removable protective solutions that shield your existing floor from scuff marks and oil stains. Floor tiles like the GarageTrac Modular Garage Flooring Tile interlock to resurface and protect damaged garage floors. Garage floor mats like the Happybuy Garage Floor Mats are easy to install, rolling onto your existing concrete slab to create a durable and easy-to-clean surface. While garage floor coverings are more convenient, they arent as durable as their garage coating counterparts.

What Is The Benefit Of An Epoxy Garage Floor

Applying a coat of epoxy on your garage floor has a variety of benefits, including its creation of an impact-, stain-, and crack-resistant surface. In addition to their durable qualities, epoxy floors are also moisture-resistant to prevent mold buildup and come in a variety of colors to match your garages design.

Pigments are mixed one at a time into an epoxy, polyaspartic or urethane coating then applied to your floor one at a time and mixed together on the floor for a great looking system.

What Is Epoxy Flooring

white and gold marble epoxy floor

Epoxy flooring is gaining popularity but that begs the question: what exactly is epoxy flooring?

Basically, epoxy flooring also known as resinous flooring is a coating thats made up of a two part epoxy system. It uses a combination of epoxy resin and a hardeners that when mixed together create a chemical reaction and bond together. This process creates multiple layers of epoxy that attaches to the subfloor creating a durable flooring material with multiple layers.

It actually starts with a layer of concrete flooring. After the concrete flooring is laid out and smoothed over, its prepped for the next steps that make it epoxy flooring.

At the same time or directly after, a mixture of resin and a hardening chemical is prepared to go on the floor as well. Over the course of a few days, this mixture will harden into a type of plastic.

The mixture is poured onto the concrete and given time to harden. Afterward, additional layers may be added.

Epoxy flooring is often used in commercial and industrial buildings like schools and hospitals but it also serves a purpose in residential environments as well.

Now Its Time To Mix Your Epoxy And Set A Prime Coat

Youll want to start with a prime coat of epoxy and metallics. The first step in this is mixing your epoxy with metallics. Put your metallics first , then pour your epoxy on top.

Mix enough epoxy to apply a thin prime coat to the whole project area. This will ensure a strong chemical bond.

We use a chop brush to apply a coat near the perimeter of the floor. Then, we use an epoxy glide roller to spread epoxy over the rest of the floor.

Let this coat dry for 1824 hours.

Meanwhile, let your flooring epoxy sit overnight to incorporate metallics.

Common Problems And Diagnosis

Bubble Formation:

The most common problem with epoxy coatings is small pinhead size bubbles may appear sporadically over the floor or in honeycomb clusters. In most cases, the bubbles are caused by air entrapment during mixing Part A and Part B by mechanical means. If the mixing action is too aggressive, such as a power drill set at a speed of over 600 rpm, it will forms small entrapped bubbles that are harder to break. When mixing with a power drill to mix with, make sure you set the speed between 300-500 rpm and use a spiral-mixing blade. Make sure that you move the mixing blade all around the inside edge of the pail from bottom to top to ensure proper mixing

If the coating is applied during cooler temperatures, especially if the coating is not preconditioned , there is very little chance that air bubbles will break before the material is set. This downfall ultimately leads to the formation of small bubbles at the surface of the coating after it is hardened. This can be prevented by applying the coating in warmer weather by or preconditioning the material .

If the bubbles are so severe throughout the floor to such an extent that it must be repaired, sand the floor with 100 mesh sand paper using a belt-sander, then vacuum it and reapply the epoxy coating.

Blisters & Craters Formation:

Poor Flow & Film Appearance:

Turn off HVAC blowers , or at least direct the air flow away from the newly applied epoxy coating.

Instructions For Use Metallic Shimmer Gold & Pearl White

Primer

  • We recommend a working temperature of approx. 20°C.
  • The floor should be dust-free, clean, and even. Level out holes, unevenness, and slopes in advance with levelling compound.
  • Always start with our EPOXY PRIMER .
  • Dye the EPOXY PRIMER with our WB pigment paste LIGHT GREY and mix well. We recommend a colour proportion of approx. 3%, for example, 30g colour paste to 1kg EPODEX PRIMER.
  • Pour the material into a paint tray after mixing.
  • Roll the material onto the desired surface with a paint roller.
  • Allow the primer to dry .
  • Main Coat

  • Use our ECO epoxy resin system for the main coating.
  • Divide the amount of resin and hardener proportionally between the two metallic colours supplied, i.e., 90% of the resin to the base colour SHIMMER GOLD, 10% of the resin to the highlight colour PEARL WHITE.
  • First, apply the base colour SHIMMER GOLD.
  • Mix the resin with the hardener in a ratio of 2:1 by weight .
  • Ideally, transfer the material to a clean mixing bucket and stir again. This will ensure that the resin and hardener are completely mixed together.
  • Add the supplied SHIMMER GOLD metallic pigment to the resin/hardener mixture. We recommend a colour proportion of approx. 1.5%, e.g., 15g pigment to 1kg resin + hardener.
  • Pour the material onto the floor immediately after mixing, as the product can boil up in the mixing bucket.
  • Apply the material with a squeegee and foam roller flooding the entire floor. We recommend a layer thickness of 1.5mm.
  • Do A Quick Moisture Test On Your Prepared Concrete Floor

Metallic Epoxy flooring White & Brown

Wait a day to pour your flooring epoxy. And, over night, tape down a 3-mil plastic sheet square over a section of concrete. In the morning, you can see if theres excess moistureand if you need to put down a moisture barrier.

One moisture barrier option is our epoxy undercoat. We recommend white if you are mixing brighter colors, like blue or quartz. For darker floors, we suggest using black.

Once your moisture levels are acceptable, you have the green light!

White And Gold Marble Epoxy Coffee Table

DIY Projects, FurnitureEpoxy Resin, Free plan, ikea hack, Minimalist, Modern0

Here is another Resin project!. I tried epoxy for the first time to make a white and grey marble serving tray and it came out really great to my surprise. Then I made these colorful resin coasters. Now, I am making this DIY White and Gold Marble Epoxy Coffee table top with pine wood legs. This came out as a beautiful piece of furniture too. Like any other DIY project, mistakes happened here as well, and I am sharing with you all about them in this article.

For a long time now, we have been using LACK Ikea coffee table. Its one of the first furniture we bought together. Over the years, it has taken a lot of beat, scratches and discoloration. Finally, it was time for a new coffee table. One thing which we liked the most about this Lack table is that it is very lightweight. Its easy to move when vacuuming the carpet or cleaning the floor. Sometimes, I move it near window for taking product photos. Anyway, we wanted the new table to be light weight as well. Two inch thick top in MDF or plywood will be way too heavier. So, I decided to repurpose this Ikea table top for the new coffee table.

    Polyurea Vs Rust Bullet

Rust Bullet, in many cases, does not require grinding. AFW Polyurea will require an etch or grind. AWF Polyurea is thicker and exhibits similar chemical resistance with a couple of key exceptions. If you expect long term exposure to large amounts of brake fluid or diesel fuel, Rust Bullet may be a better alternative. AWF Polyurea spreads easier than Rust Bullet. While care should still be used to avoid imperfections, you are less likely to have roller marks. AWF Polyurea is more versatile in terms of recoat times and the thicker coverage does a better job of hiding flaws in the concrete although still not as well as epoxy.

    Designing With White Terrazzo

Metallic Epoxy Singapore Coffee, Gold and White Mixed Living Room Floor ...

White has historically been a very important color in architecture. It has the ability to exhibit darks, lights, and shadows. White terrazzo is the perfect way to define a space in a beautiful and sophisticated manner. White is also timeless, so it doesnt go in and out of style. White terrazzo accepts and embraces anything that you put next to it.

When selecting white terrazzo, designers often want the whitest and purest white. Designers can choose from crushed white marbles and glass. Marbles naturally have variation and veining, whereas white or crystal clear glass will be more consistent. Below is a comparison of some of the most popular white aggregates all cast into a white resin for a side-by-side comparison.

Polar White glass offers the whitest and purest white. Just like diamonds, you pay for this purity. The polar white glass is a premium material and will add a few dollars a square foot however, you do gain 70% post-consumer recycled content.

A close second is Blanco Mexicano, in my opinion the best all-around choice. Its the most consistent white marble, has a minimal cost, and also includes post-consumer recycled content.

Some designers may not want a bright white but rather an off white. If thats the case, wed encourage you to simply select a color from any paint manufacturers color fan deck, and we can match the resin and help you select a complementary aggregate mix.

Please enjoy some of our other favorite projects featuring white terrazzo.

    Where To Use Epoxy Flooring

Epoxy flooring is usually thought of in high-traffic work areas like garages and workshops. That being said, these are far from your only options. You can use epoxy flooring in several areas in your home such as basements, but its crucial to consider the advantages and disadvantages to it.

    Garage Floor Epoxy

Epoxy floors are often seen in garages for a number of reasons but the primary ones revolve around their durability. In general, a well-installed epoxy floor will last a long time but theyre also fairly resistant to lasting damage.

This means that epoxy floors are a great choice for an area that sees a lot of work. Theyre even suited to more industrial settings like an auto shop or factory, so an epoxy floor will be able to handle anything you throw at it although heavy vehicle traffic will degrade it faster than standard foot traffic.

    Epoxy Basement Floor

Epoxy floors are great in basements for a lot of the same reasons that theyre great for garage floors. You dont have to worry about them getting damaged easily and you can even customize them if you have a furnished basement that you spend a lot of time in to make the space more personalized.

However, if you have chronic moisture-related problems in your basement, epoxy flooring might not be the best solution.

    How To Clean Epoxy Floor

DIY Gold Glitter Metallic Epoxy Floor Application | Xtreme Polishing Systems

Luckily, cleaning an epoxy floor isnt a difficult task. For the most part, you can rely on the cleaning products you already have around the house to get the job done.

To start, youre going to want to sweep and vacuum the floor. This will remove any surface dust, dirt, or grime to clean it and get it out of the way for tackling deeper messes. For any leftover messes, all you need is a hard foam mop and some water preferably either hot or warm water.

If you need to commit to a second round of mopping for particularly challenging stains, you can use a mixture of ammonia and water. However, the mix should be a ratio of only about two or three ounces of ammonia for every gallon of hot water.
