Reasons To Love Gold Beach Where The Pacific Meets The Rogue

Golden getaway

A shipwreck, a small town, sandy beaches and a wild river. Whats not to like?

Gold Beach doesnt have the reputation of bigger coastal destinations like Newport, nor does it have the charm of fellow small towns like Yachats, but what the southern hub lacks in amenities it makes up for in location.

One of the warmer and lower-lying towns on the Oregon coast, Gold Beach also boasts a long stretch of sandy beach that, while not actually gold, allows for great walking and beachcombing. There, the mighty Rogue River empties into the Pacific, its scenic waters winding up through the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, enjoyed by hikers, boaters and fishers alike.

Local restaurants and shops can be found, but most come with caveats: Woggys Fish and Chips is the real deal, but its only open seasonally Barnacle Bistro serves good lunch, but is prone to random closures the Goldrush Center features tons of local art, but is transforming into a community health center.

After spending a long weekend in and around town, I found it best to shrug off the small stuff and enjoy the gorgeous views, good weather, easy-going attitude and natural attractions that surround Gold Beach. Make it a destination or a hub for broader travels, just dont count Gold Beach out.

Samuel H Boardman State Park

Gold Beach in Brookings, Oregon : brookings

The Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor is seriously one of the most stunning spots on the Oregon coastline and a must when it comes to things to do in Gold Beach, Oregon. Because of how beautiful it is, it can turn into a pretty busy park, despite its southerly location.

The trails in the park are all pretty short, some are even under a mile long, but that gives you an excuse to tackle multiple in one day. The Lone Ranch Trail is a great one, starting at the southern tip of the area.

Youll be on the beach for most of the hike, giving you unobstructed views of the Pacific and surrounding rock formations. The trail then takes you up some rocks and hills for even better views of the coast, so it is a good first hike when exploring the area.

The park hugs the coastline for 12 miles, so there is plenty to explore. As you drive along the highway, there is one turnoff after the other, each with something new and exciting to see, be it a picnic area, a viewpoint, or a trailhead.

A few highlights include Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint, which can be reached by a mile-long hike, House Rock Viewpoint, the impressive Natural Bridge, which comprises seven iconic arch rocks and blowholes, and Whaleshead Beach, a gorgeous oceanfront picnic area.

It seems the further you move south in Oregon, the less popular some of the cities become. While we dont totally know why we definitely know its not because theres a lack of beauty or things to do.

And if youre south enough to visit Gold Beach and the surrounding area, you will be spoilt with adventures!

Fat biking on the beach, white water rafting down the Rogue, exploring the Redwoods, and tackling epic hikes are just a few of the things to do in Gold Beach.

Otter Point State Recreation Area

Otter Point State Recreation Area is home to beautiful walking and hiking trails, bluffs with beautiful ocean views, and sandstone rock formations. A short trail from the parking area will take you down to Agate Beach. Beautiful driftwood lines the beach and there are really nice views of the coastline and sea stacks. This is one of our favorite things to do in Gold Beach Oregon.

There is another trail from the south end of the parking lot that leads out to the bluff and the Oregon Coast Trail. The other beach in the recreation area is Bailey Beach which is accessible via the Oregon Coast Trail.

The bluff is made of sandstone so keep a good distance from the edge as it can crumble away.
