RARITY LEVEL: 1

So there you have it: 36 major types of US gold coinage , ranging from very common to extremely rare. This is an ambitious but ultimately completable set with no impossible stoppers. What I like about this set is that it encompasses coins from the 1790s and pairs them with the now-familiar designs of the 20th century.

Commemorative Centennial Gold Coins

The year 2016 celebrates 100 years from the release of the three most important gold coin designs: the Standing Liberty Quarter, the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. To commemorate the centenary anniversary of these remarkable coins, the US Mint will release during 2016 the Commemorative Centennial Gold Coins series of the above-mentioned coin designs. All these three numismatic coins have been redesigned in 1916, the Gold Mercury Dime Coin and Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar by Adolph A. Weinman and the Standing Liberty Quarter by Hermon Atkins MacNeils.

A Nickel Is Worth More Than A Dime

The transition away from using gold and silver in US coins has led to some strange dilemmas. For example, today the US Mint spends more to produce 5-cent nickels than to make 10-cent dimes. Prior the 1965, the dime contained 90% silver. That precious metals content made the dime more costly to produce than the nickel.

Nowadays, the dime is made primarily of copper, while the 5-cent coin continues to be made from nickel. The value of the metal content was recently estimated at 11.18 cents as opposed to a cost of just 5.65 cents for the smaller dime. The Mint absorbs a loss on every nickel it strikes and it is likely only a matter of time before the Mint starts using a lower cost base metal, or abandons that coin altogether.

Commemorative $10 First Spouse Gold Coin Series

United States 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold ...

A very popular design among Commemorative $10 US Gold Coins is the First Spouse Gold Coin Series, released in 2007. These coin series are minted annually and carry the depiction of the First Ladies that relate to each president depicted on the annual Presidential Gold Coins. The obverse side of this coin features the portrait of the First Lady, along with her name, presidential order and term years during which she served as a first spouse. The reverse side of the coin features an emblematic unique image from the spouses work and life. When the Presidential Gold Coins is released featuring one of the few presidents that served without a spouse, the First Spouse Gold Coin series bears the image of the Lady Liberty on the obverse and the image of the presidents life on the reverse side.

Horsepower Before Steam Power

In recent years the US Mint has been producing more than 28 billion coins annually nearly all of them clad base metal coins for use in circulation. Of course, the US Mint lacked this production capability during its early existence.

Before the industrial revolution and the introduction of steam-powered coin presses, the mint relied on animal-powered presses. Horses and oxen were the engines that drove coin production.

No gold portfolio is complete without including the most popular and widely traded American gold coins. Gold coinage has a long history in the United States. Americans relied on gold coins in a variety of denominations for commerce during the first century and a half of our nations existence.

Today those same coins, as well as more modern issues from the US Mint are used as a form of investment by people as a hedge against inflation or economic catastrophes. They have proven to be a reliable store of value even if people no longer use them to make payments.

Depending upon the outcome of our governments experiment with purely fiat money, Americans may again see gold back at the center of our monetary system. Paper currency systems have a way of collapsing for lack of trust. And trust is exactly what a gold standard, or gold redeemability, can provide.

Us Mint Couldn’t Meet Demand For Gold And Silver Coins Due To Pandemic Buying

Sale of bullion rose 258% as investors raced for safe havens and online activists launched a buying frenzy

The United States Mint was unable to meet surging demand for its gold and silver bullion coins in 2020 and through January, due partly to pandemic-driven demand and plant capacity issues, it said.

Sales of US gold bullion coins rose 258% last year while silver coin demand was up 28%, the Mint said on Tuesday. Heavy buying has continued in 2021, it said, squeezing supplies, which had already been tight as the coronavirus affected production.

A social media-driven buying spree lifted silver futures to an eight-year high on Monday, but dealers in the market for coins were already grappling with a supply shortage and shipping delays before that rally.

It came as treasury secretary Janet Yellen announced she would be calling a meeting of key financial regulators this week to discuss market volatility driven by retail trading in GameStop and other stocks.

Yellen will convene heads of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a Treasury official said on Tuesday.

Shares in the struggling retail chain fell 60% on Wall Street on Tuesday to $90 as the mania sparked by small investors that had sent its value soaring past $300 a share last week looked like imploding.

The silver coins and silver bars that are available have acquired significantly higher premia, he added.

This type was made for seven years and then the entire denomination was scrapped until 1838. I like the 1799 best as a type date given its 18th-century issuance but the 1801 and 1803 are interesting issues as well. This type is not rare but locating really nice individual coins has become very challenging. High-grade type sets can expect coins in grades as lofty as MS63 to MS64 Gems are very rare.

PCGS doesnt recognize this as a distinct type but I think it should be and since this is my article, it is being recognized. Three mints produced this type: Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Dahlonega. The Philadelphia is the most common while the two mint-marked issues are scarce. If possible, choose a nice 1839-C or 1839-D to represent this type.

The Largest and Heaviest U.S. Gold Coins Ever Minted

Congress adopted the Coinage Act on April 2, 1792. It established the United States dollar as the standard monetary unit and authorized the creation of the US Mint. The Act also provided federal funding for construction of the Mints first location in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Mint became the first federally owned building to be newly constructed. The newly inked constitution imposed strict limits on the real property that could be owned by the federal government and minting facilities were one of the permitted types.

Special West Point Coinage

An unusual coinage from West Point occurred in 1996, when a commemorative Roosevelt dime was produced for the 50th anniversary of the design. Given as an insert with the standard mint sets sold that year, over 1.457 million were produced. Thus, although this “W”-mint-marked dime is not particularly scarce, it was made only for collectors. In 2015 another “W”-mint-marked dime was issued along with a 2015-W dollar, these as part of a three-coin set to commemorate the . Only 75,000 sets were produced. In 2014, a reverse-proof silver Kennedy Half Dollar which was part of a commemorative set, along with the 24K gold proof Kennedy Half Dollar were produced there to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy Half Dollar design, again with the “W” mint mark.

In 2015, the West Point Mint struck Sacagawea Dollars for the first time. Released as part of a special Native American Coin and Currency Set, only 90,000 were produced.

The first cents to display the “W” mint mark were produced for collectors in 2019. These West Point Lincoln cents were added to traditional mint and proof sets and were minted in three different finishes. An uncirculated 2019-W cent was included with the uncirculated set, a proof 2019-W cent was included with the proof set, and a reverse-proof 2019-W cent was included with the silver proof set. There are no mintage limits for these sets and individual buyers are not limited in the quantities they are allowed to order.

Fort Knox Doesnt Have A Mint

Contrary to popular belief, none of the US coins have ever been struck at Fort Knox. It is true the facility in Fort Knox, Kentucky is affiliated with the US Mint. It is home to the US Bullion Depository which is used just for storing the gold and silver bullion reserves from the US as well as other countries.

Officially speaking, these reserves are rarely touched. The thousands of tons of gold kept there are not for use in todays minting operations. They are intended to be a form of national savings. It is worth noting the controversy over these reserves. There has been no official audit of the holdings there since the 1950s and there is some reason to question whether all the metal remains in the vaults at Fort Knox.

The US Mint must acquire the precious metal used in the production of its coins elsewhere. By law, officials must buy only gold and silver bullion coins and bars mined within the US.
