The teams meet in Houston, Texas.

It’s the up-and-comers against the established power as Canada faces Mexico in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals.

Both teams have won the competition before, but that’s where all comparisons between the two end. While the Canadians can harken back to a Cinderella run to the 2000 Gold Cup title as their best-ever moment on the men’s side , the Mexicans are the Kings of CONCACAF and expect to win this tournament every time out.

With 11 previous titles to their name, El Tri are easily the Goliath in this match-up.

Despite the overall disparity between the nations when it comes to historical success, Mexican head coach Tata Martino will be wary of a Canadian side that has proved itself in this tournament against other regional powers. Canada fell 1-0 to the United States in a group-stage game that was as evenly matched as a 90-minute loss could be, then ran rampant over an ill-prepared Costa Rican team in the quarterfinals.

While John Herdman’s Canada won’t feature star players such as Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, the team has built chemistry throughout the Gold Cup that could hurt the Mexicans if they approach the match with overconfidence.

How are teams eliminated and/or points collected? This is the only thing I could find from the web, but is it the same every year?

The 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup will consist of three groups of four teams for the first round with the top two from each group, along with the best two third-placed teams, progressing to the quarterfinals with the group stage running from 6-13 June throughout five stadiums in the USA.
Presumably, the quarterfinals on up are single elimination…

It is because the stadiums in the United States are better. âPreceding unsigned comment added by 12.183.52.103 03:07, 29 January 2008

Why Are Concacaf Championship Results Combined With Gold Cup Results

This has been debated on this talk page before, years ago. But apparently whoever changed the page needs reminding — the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the CONCACAF Championship may have served the same purpose, but they are not the same event. The current Wikipedia page for the Gold Cup says that it was founded in 1963, and that Mexico has won the most titles with eleven. Both these statements are directly contradicted by CONCACAF’s information page about the history of the Gold Cup, which states clearly that the inaugural Gold Cup championship was held in 1991, and that Mexico has won the most titles with eight. Thus, the statement that the Gold Cup “was previously referred to as the CONCACAF Championship before being renamed” is unsupported by the tournament’s organizers. The CONCACAF Championship information and results need to be segregated from the CONCACAF Gold Cup information and results, and the difference between the two needs to be made clear. —71.156.28.98 21:51, 18 July 2021

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2020: Al Boum Photo strikes again | Racing TV

The 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup began on Saturday, July 10 as 16 nations battle to become the kings of the continent. With guest team Qatar also participating, it’s the United States and Mexico that enter as the favorites to win the title. Things will look a bit different this time around. Thanks to the Concacaf Nations League tournament, which concluded in June, we will see a bunch of new faces for the U.S. and Mexico, as both national teams needed to provide rest to their top players ahead of the European season starting in August.

Let’s take a look at the eight venues hosting games this summer:

  • Orlando, Florida: Exploria Stadium
  • Kansas City, Kansas: Children’s Mercy Park
  • Houston, Texas: BBVA Stadium and NRG Stadium
  • Dallas, Texas: Cotton Bowl
  • Arlington, Texas: AT& T Stadium
  • Austin, Texas: Q2 Stadium

Jockey Club Gold Cup Quick Sheet: Get To Know The Horses

The feature race this Saturday at Saratoga Race Course is something entirely new for the venerable upstate New York track. The 103rd running of the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes will be held for the very first time at Saratoga after primarily being held at Belmont Park over the course of the past century .

Through the years, the Jockey Club Gold Cup has been very significant in determining year-end championships and Horse of the Year honors, and its been won by a roll call of legends, including Man o War, Twenty Grand, War Admiral, Whirlaway, Citation, Hill Prince, Nashua , Sword Dancer, Kelso , Buckpasser, Damascus, Arts and Letters, Shuvee , Forego, Exceller, Affirmed, John Henry, Slew o Gold , Easy Goer, Cigar, Skip Away , Mineshaft, Funny Cide, and Curlin . The race was held at either 1 ½ miles or two miles from 1919 to 1989, and has been held at 1 ¼ miles since 1990.

The $1 million, Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup is also a Breeders Cup Challenge Series Win and Youre In qualifying race for the $6 million Longines Breeders Cup Classic, scheduled for Nov. 6 at Del Mar. The winner of Saturdays race will receive an expenses-paid berth to the Longines Classic. One important change about the race moving to Saratoga is that the 1 ¼-mile test will be held around two full turns, rather than 1 ½ turns as it was at Belmont Park. The 1 ¼-mile Longines Classic at Del Mar will also be held around two turns.

How Far Do The Horses Have To Run In The Gold Cup

The Gold Cup is run over a distance of 3m2f and 70 yards or 5,294m for those who love the metric system on the New Course at Cheltenham.

There are 22 steeplechase fences to be jumped during the contest, consisting of a combination of plain fences, open ditches and a water jump. The field will tackle two plain fences which become the second-last and last in two circuits time before turning left and heading uphill, out into the country. The fourth fence is the water jump while the fifth and seventh are open ditches.

Gold Cup Vs Concacaf Championship

This has been brought up multiple times on this page but nothing has ever come of it. I think we really need to separate the two articles because it’s obvious that they are two distinct tournaments. Really the only evidence that is needed is here: Scroll down to Gold Cup Winners and notice that it only goes back to 1991. CONCACAF clearly recognizes that Gold Cup as being distinct from the CONCACAF Championship , otherwise the results would go back much further. Eightball 16:49, 18 June 2009

A Guide To All 16 Gold Cup Teams

The 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup is here, leaving 16 teams to vie for this summer’s confederation championship title.

Broken down by nation, here’s the rundown of what each contender brings to the field. They’re divided into four groups and eyeing a ticket to the August 1 final at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

How qualified: Canada punched their ticket with a second-place finish in Concacaf Nations League Group A.

Gold Cup history: This will be Canada’s 15th Gold Cup and 12th in a row. They’ve made it to three title games and won it all in 2000.

Head coach: John Herdman, who guided the team to the quarterfinals of the last Gold Cup, is 18-4 since taking the reins in 2018.

Key man: Even with all the in-form forward line talent available, Alphonso Davies is still Canada’s main man. From recovery help at the backend to his terrifying motor driving the attack, the Bayern Munich star can take over matches.

Player to watch: With veteran No. 1 Milan Borjan off to prepare for Champions League qualifying with Red Star Belgrade, Vancouver netminder Maxime Crepeau now has the chance to start making his name at the international level. His shot-stopping can keep Canada in games when they’re under fire.

MLS connections: Thirteen players on Canada’s tournament squad can currently be found on MLS rosters, and another four previously played in the league.

How qualified: Topping Nations League Group D did the trick.

  • Gold Cup Group D

Wins Count In Specific Articles

Given that the CONCACAF championship in both its incarnations are treated under this united article, it would seem consistent to me that the numbering of wins is inclusive of both titles. The articles are inconsistent. Canada’s only Gold Cup title is listed as their second , and Mexico’s 2009 win was for a long time recorded as their 8th title , but Mexico’s 93/96/98/03 titles are listed as 1st/2nd/3rd/4th wins. This is untenable. I cannot see how non-inclusive count can be valid when the status of this article so clearly established the principle that one title is the successor of the other, but I seek consensus here before making changes.
