How Do They Compare Durability Wise

Diamonique Choice of Cut Band Ring Platinum or 14K Gold Clad on QVC

As said before in the first section, gold-filled pieces are generally more durable than gold-plated due to the thicker layer of gold alloy. The longevity of either type is dependent on the wear, environment, and quality of the piece.

As long as the piece is well cared for, gold-filled jewelry can last a lifetime. Gold plated jewelry is not very durable and can’t stand up to much heat, water, or wear.

How Do The Four Gold Options Rank From Best To Worst

This depends on your criteria. If were simply talking about quality / long-lastingness, I would go with: 1.) Solid Gold, 2.) Gold Filled, 3.) Gold Vermeil, 4.) Gold Plated.

And if were talking about ranking them based on general cost, you can just flip that list: 1.) Gold Plated, 2.) Gold Vermeil, 3.) Gold Filled, 1.) Solid Gold.

Of course, you get what you pay for, so buy the best you can within your budget range.

Which Gold Option Sounds Best To You

Solid gold will always be the best option in any lineup. And in our opinion, gold vermeil would be your second best option.

Gold-filled jewelry could be a great option, but because its not always easy to find, plus its high cost , we cant wholeheartedly recommend it.

The most affordable option would be gold-plated jewelry. Just remember there are different quality levels of gold plating, and in general, gold-plated jewelry simply isnt as long-lasting as the other options.

How Do I Know If My Jewelry Is Gold Plated

Diamonique Choice of Cut Band Ring Platinum or 14K Gold Clad on QVC

There are several ways to test whether your jewelry is gold-plated or not.

i. Magnetic Test

Gold is a non-ferrous metal, which means it is not magnetic.

Try sticking a magnet close to your testing piece.

If it is magnetic, theres a chance you are getting a reaction from the base metal which is ferrous.

Although the magnetic test is not definitive, itll give you a clearer glimpse towards your jewelry piece.

ii. Acid Test

The most reliable test to determine the gold content in your jewelry is through an acid test.

Apply acid onto a sample piece of your jewelry and watch for a colour change.

The change in colour on your jewelry piece will determine what kind of metals the sample contains.

What Is Gold Clad Facts You Should Know

If youve seen a late-night commercial advertising gold-clad coins at a discounted price, you might be wondering, what is gold clad? They say fancy stuff like 18K fine Gold clad coins. The coins look just like gold, shiny and beautiful. But are gold-clad coins worth anything?

In the next few minutes, you will learn everything to do with gold-clad metals, how they make them, how to identify them, and their real value.

Lets get started.

What Is Gold Filled

Gold filled is a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base – jewelers brass. US standards require the gold layer to consist of 1/20th of the jewelrys total weight. The gold is usually 14k gold, but sometimes may be 12k gold .

Gold filled has some limitations because of the way it is manufactured it is only available in wire or sheet form, so it cannot be casted or poured into a mold. Gold filled charms are either flat , or hollow . Whenever we can’t make charms or rings out of gold filled, we use gold vermeil instead.

Gold filled jewelry has almost 100x more gold than gold plated jewelry. Since the gold is mechanically bonded to the base rather than plated, it cant rub off. It has the same qualities as solid gold jewelry at a fraction of the cost. Gold filled jewelry is also great for people who are allergic to metals, as the material will not cause an allergic reaction.

US gold filled jewelry is our material of choice we use gold filled where ever we can because it is higher quality than gold vermeil and gold plated, but still not as expensive as solid gold. Our favorite 100% gold filled jewelry includes: Traveler’s Coin Necklace, Croissant Hoop Earrings, Everyday Hoop Earrings, Gold Solitaire Ring, Saint Christopher Necklace, and Tiny Tag Necklace.

Overall – gold filled jewelry is perfect for everyday wear because it can handle the wear and tear of daily life, and it’s very affordable. With proper care, gold filled jewelry can last a lifetime!

Cons Of Gold Plated Jewelry

#1 It will tarnish!

If youre wondering, does gold plated jewelry tarnish? the answer is yes, it does! Gold plated jewelry items will definitely tarnish over time, though solid gold items will not tarnish at all. Gold plated items have a base metal underneath the gold plate, like copper or silver, which makes the jewelry piece stronger and less likely to bend, though these jewelry metals tarnish. In a gold plated jewelry item, the metal beneath the gold plate will eventually come to the surface and become discolored, so it will need to be polished frequently to keep its shine. The reason that gold plated jewelry tarnishes is because the molecules of the base metals eventually transfer into the thin layer of gold, causing the gold layer to break down.

#2 The plating can be scratched or chipped.

After a few weeks of wearing your gold plated jewelry item, the gold plate is likely to start chipping, wearing, or flaking off. The reason for this is because the gold layer is so thin and not very durable itself. Gold is a very soft metal and can easily be scratched unless alloyed with other metals to make it stronger.

#3 The amount of gold is minimal and can lead to a lower value.

The layer of gold on gold plated items is the least amount of gold when compared to gold filled or solid gold items. Thus, the gold plate is very thin and susceptible to flaking off. Since the gold content is so low in gold plated items, the value is low.

#4 Cant wear gold plated items in water.

What Does 18k Gold Clad Mean

Its the base metal. For example, an 18K Gold-Filled necklace means that the necklace is covered in an 18K pure gold alloy. As for gold clad, it means that a base metal has been covered with an extremely thin layer of gold. Usually, it is less than 0.5micrometers .

Whats the difference between gold clad and gold plated?

Gold clad is a fancy word for gold plated. It is an extremely thin layer of gold plated over a metal like copper, brass, silver, etc.

Gold Over Sterling Silver

If it satisfies the 3 conditions above, it is legally considered to be gold vermeil.

However, it is common , for people to call any gold coated piece of sterling silver jewelry gold vermeil.

If your sterling silver jewelry is plated with gold, but it doesnt meet all 3 classifications above, it is considered plainly just gold over sterling silver, and not gold vermeil.

What Is The Difference Between Gold Plated And Gold Filled

Diamonique Solitaire Ring, Platinum Clad or 14K Yellow Gold Clad on QVC

The main difference between gold plated and gold filled is that gold plated jewelry has a thin layer of gold whereas gold filled jewelry has a thicker gold layer and is more durable.

If you are planning to buy gold jewelry, you have to know the difference between solid gold, gold plated, and gold filled jewelry. Solid gold jewelry is jewelry that is made entirely out of gold, while gold plated and gold filled have outer layers of gold.

So Which Type Of Jewelry Should I Choose

If youre looking for the highest-quality, demi-fine jewelry, a vermeil collection with thick plating in 18k gold would be a good choice. If you dont mind a lower base metal, gold filled pieces are probably your best bet when it comes to long-lasting and durable jewelry. Although gifts for loved ones, bridal jewelry and commemorative pieces are all best suited as vermeil, gold filled or fine jewelry, your casual fashion wear can work great with just a thin layer of gold plating.

While pure 14k or 18k gold or platinum pieces are always the best choice for high-quality, permanent pieces of your collection, vermeil and gold filled can always be a good alternative for the budget-conscious fashionista.

Inspect For A Hallmark Stamp

Expect a solid gold bar to have a stamp showing the purity and manufacturers name. E.g., it could have a 14K label plus the manufacturers name. Conversely, most gold-clad items have no markings. If they have a marking, it will be either GP, KGP or HGE

Where to look for the hallmark?

You might need a magnifying glass for this.In necklaces and bracelets, look for the markings on the clasp. For watches, look behind the watch, and for wedding bands, look on the inner side. If it has no marking, assume its gold clad.

Gold Color As An Indicator

The color of your jewelry can also be used as a clue to whether the piece is solid or plated.

More:.

Gold-plated jewelry is sometimes covered with 24-karat gold. In contrast, solid gold pieces are not made of pure gold as it is too soft they are instead made of a gold alloy that contains metals that give the mixture hardness.

So, if your jewelry has an intense yellow color similar to that of pure gold and is relatively cheap , then it may be gold plated.

The best way to know that for sure, however, is to have the piece acid tested.

You can also look at the surface of the jewelry and see if its tone is even throughout or there is a change in color somewhere: If the gold plating is worn off in some places, the underlying metal will be visible there.

Theres A Big Difference Between These Three

Technibond Double Row Corinthian Link Chain Necklace 14K Yellow Gold ...

Some jewelry lovers assume the terms vermeil, gold plated and gold filled are interchangeable, but these jewelry categories actually vary in very important ways. Of course, each type has a gold layer on the surface, so its easy to confuse them. While the presence of gold definitely makes each type more valuable and durable than costume jewelry, youll want to carefully consider the qualities of each before choosing which to add to your wardrobe.

First, lets go over the basic definitions of each, and then well compare them and explore how you can decide which is the best for you.

The Cons Of Gold Clad

  • Easily Wears Out The shiny golden look only lasts months before the coating starts to fade. If you wear gold-clad jewelry every day, expect a little over a years lifespan before the base metal starts to show. Gold-clad jewelry is not suitable for everyday wear.
  • Discoloring Though pure gold does not discolor, the gold in a gold-clad metal is too little to make an impact. As the gold coating fades away, the base metal is exposed to air. When the base metal reacts with air, it starts discoloring. Soon enough, your jewelry turns to a different color.
  • Skin Irritant After Wearing Out Solid gold is hypoallergenic. Meaning, it will not irritate your skin even if you wore it every day. But the same cannot be said about gold-clad jewelry. After the gold coating wears away, it exposes the base metal, which could be brass. With or without an allergy, the base metal will irritate your skin after some time.
