Can White Gold Rings Be Resized

Don't Miss

How Much Does It Cost

White Gold vs Platinum… What Is a Better Metal for Your Engagement Ring?

Ring resizing will depend on various factors, such as material costs and labor fees. The price can range anywhere from $20 for a simple job, to hundreds of dollars for a more complicated fix. At Clean Origin, our policy is that you are allowed 1 free resizing within 100 days of your purchase. An incredible offer, and added peace of mind if you are in between sizes for an engagement ring.

Cutting Your Ring To Resize It

Usually, in order to resize a ring, jewelers cut its band and then increase or decrease its size before rejoining it.

To resize a ring, jewelers cut the band and then increase or decrease its size.

To increase the size of your ring, the jeweler will spread it as much as needed after cutting it and will then add a new piece of metal to fill the gap.

After the resizing is done, the jeweler will put your ring back together by soldering the band where it was cut.

Types Of Designs Which You Should Not Or Cannot Have Reworks

Even though it may be hard to accept, there are certain rings which simply cannot be resized and those which should not be reworked. For example, eternity rings that have a continuous setting of gemstones around the band are very tough to be resized.

Any attempts to do so may damage the gemstones and also distort the original beauty of the ring. This is because resizing upsets the original continuity and balance of the ring when it was first custom created.

Brian Gavinâs beautiful eternity rings give consumers a strong incentive to stay in shape.

Also, titanium, tungsten and stainless steel rings are nearly impossible to resize due to their material properties. Likewise, non-metal bands such as wood, glass or quartz also cannot be modified and reshaped.

If you have a ring which has an invisible tension setting, altering the size of the band may upset the ringâs tensile strength. This can cause durability issues as well as misalignment of the center stone if the resizing is done incorrectly.

On the last note, it is advisable that you check out all the necessary details with your jeweler before you make a purchase. Upfront advice will help prevent headaches down the road and avoid unnecessary trouble should the need for ring modification arises.

Vendors like Brian Gavin, White Flash and James Allen offer great after-sales services like free ring polishing and resizing . Besides selling high quality jewelry, they go all out to take care of their customers.

Before you do anything rash with your current ring , do you actually know how tight or loose a ring should be for it to be considered as correctly sized?

A ring which is properly adjusted to the size of your finger should feel a wee bit tight to you . It should go on your finger easy and come off a bit harder, with a slight brush against your skin.

Getting used to the feeling takes a few days during which you will constantly feel and think that the ring is too tight for you. While patience is key, if your new ring still feels too tight or uncomfortable after a few days, you should consult your jeweler.

Ring Sizing And Resizing

There are many reasons why you may want to have a ring resized. Engagement rings and rings received as gifts or passed down as heirlooms usually need to be resized to fit correctly. Maybe you’ve gained or lost weight or would just like to wear your ring on a different finger. Ring resizing is a standard service offered by most jewelers, who have several different ways that they can help make your ring fit perfectly. It’s important to have your rings resized by a professional jeweler who has the time and skills necessary to do excellent work on your precious ring.

Can You Resize Any Ring

To be resized, your ring must be made of metal such as silver, gold or platinum. Jewelers cannot resize rings made of wood, quartz or other non-metal material. There must also be enough space around the ring for it to be made larger or smaller. Rings that have a simpler design are the easiest to resize, although its usually possible to do so with rings that have a channel setting or one with many gemstones. For those types of rings, it may be necessary to add, remove or rearrange the setting to resize it properly.

Certain rings should not be resized. These include:

Options for rings that cant be resized include wearing a smaller ring next to it to help it stay in place or having the ring remade in the correct size. You can also invest in an inexpensive ring overlay which is a removable plastic adjuster that can fit over any ring shank to make it fit without cutting it.

Since ring resizing is such a delicate process, its imperative that you find an expert jeweler. When done by a knowledgeable and skilled jeweler, you shouldnt even be able to tell that the ring was resized except for platinum which inevitably shows a fine line at the soldering joint. Expert jewelers are skilled in working with delicate gemstones and settings and will ensure that your ring is correctly resized and that all of the details, such as engravings and prongs, are restored correctly.

Are There Other Options Aside From Resizing

If your ring slips a little from side to side but otherwise fits well, your jeweler may be able to modify it without resizing it. There are several options:

  • Sizing beads: These small metal beads are placed on the inside of the band and help your ring fit more snugly. They also help the ring sit upright on your finger.
  • Spring insert: This small, horseshoe-shaped band of metal is placed on the inside of the band. It springs open and closed to help you get the ring past your knuckle.
  • Sizing bar: This is a u-shaped bar your jeweler solders in place across the bottom part of the ring inside the band. Theres a hinge on one side and a latch on the other. You open the latch to put the ring on and swing it shut to hold it in place.

Another option is to simply wear a smaller ring to keep your engagement ring in place.

These Metals Cant Take Heat Either

The problems dont stop there. Some of these class ring metals dont take heat very well. Their melting points are different than gold. Applying the wrong temperature to them could cause them to break, crack or melt. Not a great scenario.

The easiest class rings to size are going to be the more expensive rings like solid 10kt, 14kt and 18kt yellow and white golds. Jewelers deal with these metals on a daily basis and will have no problems sizing themBut

How To Resize A Ring Larger

Typically, resizing a ring to make it larger is a bit more complicated process than adjusting it to a smaller size. Jewelers might use different techniques to achieve this, depending on how large the ring needs to be.

  • Stretching – If a ring needs to be a half size larger, jewelers might try the stretching technique. It involves stretching the metal and extending the rings band. However, we would strongly advise avoiding this method as it can weaken the rings structure and distort its shape.
  • Adding If you need your ring bigger than that, jewelers will enlarge the bands circumference by adding metal to it. They will snip the rings band and add a piece of metal in between the cut ends. After soldering, cleaning, and polishing the surface, the ring will look and feel as good as new.

Tips For How To Wear A Ring That Is Too Large

If you have an eternity ring or a ring made from a material that is too large and cant be resized, dont worry. You can still wear your ring you will just have to make some minor adjustments. All you need is a simple band that fits on your finger.

We recommend placing your larger ring on your finger first and then add your simple band. The simple band that fits your finger will keep the larger ring on your finger. It will also create a beautiful stacked ring look that will give you the best of both worlds.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Ring Resized

Once you get a ring, you can conclude that it doesnt fit correctly. Sometimes, the ring with the right size can become too big or small over time, after you gain or lose weight. You will have the same problem when deciding to wear it on a different finger. Whatever the reason is, it is time to have your ring resized.

On average, the time you need to get your ring resized will primarily depend on the ring type and the jewelry store where you plan to take it. Plus, there are two types of repairs. The traditional way will take a bit longer, but you can choose a quick repair available nowadays. Lets consider your options and see how long does it take to get a ring resized.

First Things First: How Is A Ring Supposed To Fit

Your engagement ring should be snug, but not tight. It should slide on easily but take a little tugging to get off. If it slides right off your finger with no resistance, its too big and needs to be resized. Or, if its so tight it cuts into your finger and is very hard to get off, it should be resized.

Can All Engagement Rings Be Resized

The vast majority of engagement rings can be resized. However, rings that have gemstones on the entire band usually cant be resized.

The reason for this is simple: eternity bands just dont have enough exposed metal available for a jeweler to work on. This means its important to know your partners ring size before you buy a ring with this type of setting.

Its also usually impossible for a jeweler to resize a tension ring. This type of ring has a diamond or other gemstone held in place by pressure from the two ends of the ring. Most of the time, this type of ring needs to be custom made to provide a perfect fit.

There are also limits on how much a ring can be adjusted. Normally, you can adjust a ring up to two sizes smaller or larger. Beyond this, the risk of damaging the ring and affecting the diamond setting increases.

Finally, some materials are too hard or brittle to resize safely. Rose gold, for example, can crack easily when exposed to stress, meaning jewelers will usually avoid resizing any rings made from this metal.

Tungsten rings, on the other hand, are usually too hard to resize effectively. Stainless steel rings are also too hard to resize by hand. If youre considering buying an engagement ring made from these materials, its important to make sure you have your partners exact ring size beforehand.

What Factors Affect The Process And Resizing Time For Ring Resizing

Graff Ruby Diamond White Gold Cocktail Ring For Sale Opulent Jewelers

As we mentioned, depending on the ring type or metal, resizing might require different approaches. Here are some things that will impact how jewelers will resize your ring:

  • If you have a colored stone in the ring, they have to avoid heat exposure or it will damage the rock then the ring itself. No amount of resizing will help you then.
  • Set stones cannot be resized by more than 1 size without fully resetting the stones.
  • When dealing with a platinum ring, there needs to be a much higher heat exposure as the the metals melting point is much higher. This can cause issues with platinum rings that have colored stones due to our first point. In order to avoid damaging the stone and the ring, the jewelers will need to use the laser solderer instead of the flame solder in order to protect the stones and the ring.
  • Silver is generally a harder metal than gold as gold is much softer and easier to work with.
  • Stainless steel rings can be resized, despite what your local jeweler might tell you! Many jewelers dont even bother with stainless steel resizing because it has an incredibly high melting point beyond most commonly used tools. This means that specialized machines such as TIG Welders and high-powered laser welders are needed and those tools are usually only possessed by jewelry manufacturers. Fortunately, Quick Jewelry Repairs is one of the few jewelry repair services that can offer ring resizing for stainless steel rings.

Lets talk about stretching a Ring.

Some people know this can be done, others have no clue. The truth of the matter is, yes, you can stretch a ring to size it.

How Many Sizes Can You Stretch A Gold Band

Normally the jewelers only advise a half size up or one full size up. I have seen emergency situations where the jewelers have been able to stretch a ring up 1.5 2 sizes, but those are rare and I dont recommend it. Stretching a ring this much can break down its durability and strength.

Plus it can leave scars and pits in the gold.

    How Much Does Resizing Cost

This is hard to answer because there are a lot of factors that go into it. These include the style of the ring, amount of detailing, the thickness of the band, if you’re resizing up or down, the metal, whether there are gemstones, and where you live.

As you can see, a lot goes into determining the price. That’s why we like the James Allen sizing tool. It helps take the guesswork out of sizing. But we’re going to do our best to give you an idea. In general, the cost depends on the price of the material and the amount of labor required.

Here’s what you can expect. Our estimates are for resizing up, so calculate about half of that if you need to resize down .

    • Platinum rings are toughest to work with. It requires more time and different set of tools and burning gas. Therefore, it’s the most expensive to resize. Resizing a platinum ring up costs around $100 at the lower end of the scale, and could go up to as high as $300 for more complex rings. If you’re resizing down, because of the difficulty in working with the material, expect around $60-$100 for one size down.
  • White gold ringscost more in material but they’re easier to work with than platinum. White gold rings have a layer of rhodium plating that will come off when melted. So the ring will have to be re-plated with rhodium. Rhodium plating itself costs around $30-$40. So the total resizing could be anywhere from $60-$130.
