Why Are The Payments Not Released All At Once

California Golden State Stimulus II: Next payments go out Oct. 5

With 9 million people waiting for their payments, many were the people that didn’t understand why they didn’t release all the payments at once.

The Tax Board explained that releasing all payments at the same time was unviable for many reasons, including the fact that state workers had to validate eligibility, protect against fraud and issue each stimulus check, at the same time they had to carry on with other mandatory expenses.

“The state has also various processing constraints, including printing and mailing,” it added.

“The Golden State Stimulus is key to lifting up those hit hardest by the pandemic and supporting California’s economic recovery, putting money directly in the hands of folks who will spend it on basic needs and within their local communities,” said Newsom at the time.

Another Round Of Golden State Stimulus Checks Are Coming Soon

But many Californians are still disqualified from receiving the funds.

Last week, the California state legislature approved a second round of statewide stimulus payments to Golden State residents. The Golden State Stimulus checks, as the government has officially dubbed them, are worth $600 apiece.

The first wave of these checks has already been sent out. However, most residents did not receive them because the upper-income threshold for qualifying was $30,000 per year, a low bar that excludes more than half of working Californians. The median income in California is around $32,000 per year.

The second round of payments sets the upper-income limit at a more generous $75,000 per year a rate that still disqualifies some of the states residents, but includes middle-income workers that were previously left out. The newest round of payments also excludes residents who received a check during the first round of payments meaning that no one will receive duplicate checks. In this sense, the most recent stimulus program is not actually a second payment, but a second round of payments targeting many Californians who are still in need of economic assistance, but who do not need it as urgently as lower-income workers.
