How Long Will 10k Gold Last

Part 4. Understanding Gold. Gold karats. What is a 10K, 14K, 18K?

10k is especially good for a white gold choice as the lesser gold content makes the metal naturally paler. 10k gold is very durable and will last a lifetime with care. As the gold content is less, and the nickel content is greater, people who are allergic to nickel may be more affected with a 10k ring.

Where Did It Come From

The finest vermeil finishes for jewelry come from Italy. Families of artisans have perfected this craft and passed it down from one generation to another. In addition, there is strict quality oversight to protect Italy’s reputation as a world-class jewelry production center.

Vermeil jewelry imported from Italy must also meet the U.S. regulation standards, so there are layers of quality control built into every genuine piece of gold vermeil jewelry.

Is 10k Gold Worth Anything

10k gold is worth buying if you are looking for a piece of real gold jewelry that will be long lasting and not expensive. Even though 10k gold will have less than 50% pure gold, the other alloys and metals increase the hardness in 10k gold jewelry. This means it wont bend or break easily, which is another reason why 10k gold is worth buying. If you are trying to determine how much 10k gold is worth, you should always consult a licensed professional who will examine your 10k gold jewelry piece. Since 10k gold has a percentage of pure gold, 10k gold is worth anything that a professional jeweler deems valuable. Keep in mind though, the more wear and tear there is decreases the value of any real gold item. This is why its always important, no matter what karat of gold your jewelry items is, to always keep your gold jewelry in the best condition possible.

To clean your gold vermeil jewelry, gently rinse in a bath of warm water and gentle dish soap . Rinse and pat dry.

In terms of percentage, 10 karats corresponds to 41.7% gold content, while 14 karats is equivalent to 58.3% pure gold.

How To Perform The Acid Test

Take the black polishing stone that comes with the test kit and put it on a flat surface. Take the piece of gold you are testing and scratch it on the polishing stone. You will see a visible mark on the stone from the gold.

Next, you take the 3 acids, starting with 10K, and place a drop of each on the scratch. If the scratch disappears, its not real. If the scratch stays, it is probably real.

Use all three acids to determine what karat gold you have. If the scratch stays on 10K acid but not on 14K acid, your piece is 10K gold

Important: The acid test, like all other tests, requires experience. If you fail to do your due diligence and use all three tests, the acid test might give you a false reading. Be sure to use all three tests when testing gold to ensure youve done it properly.

What Are The Differences Between Colors Of Gold

While we sometimes assume that gold is only yellow in color, we know thats not the case. Gold comes in three colors: yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. The only difference, aside from the look, among these colors of gold is the metal and alloys mixed with the gold.

Yellow gold is said to look appealing on anyone, but especially those with olive or darker skin tones. Being the purest, yellow gold is easy for jewelers to manipulate. This type of gold can also be easily resized in the future.

White gold is less susceptible to scratching and denting, but it requires polishing and has the potential need to be dipped every few years to retain its luster and color. According to some sources such as the Diamond Pro, white gold best complements any diamonds near it.

Rose gold has become more popular over the last few years due to its unique and romantic look. Rose gold is actually the most durable among the three colors, since this type of gold is mixed with copper. However, copper can sometimes cause an allergic reaction on the skin. Because it is mixed with copper, rose gold is not available in 24k. Youll have better luck finding rose gold in 10k, 14k, or 18k.

Why Don’t Pure Gold Rings Exist

Usually, you won’t be able to find 24-karat gold rings. This is simply because pure gold is a soft metal that tends to bend and scratch very easily. This makes pure gold quite impractical for daily wear.

In fact, you would be able to notice scratches and deformations in a 24K gold ring within days of wearing it! This is why several metal alloys are added to gold to make it harder and more durable.

Yellow gold will usually be mixed with metals such as silver, palladium, platinum, and nickel to make it sturdier. Pure gold rings do exist, but they are usually used for ceremonial purposes. They are worn very seldom so that they don’t get used up quickly.

While 24K gold is very rare in rings, it can be encountered more often in earrings as they get subjected to a smaller amount of wear and tear. 24K gold has the advantage of an intense yellow color tone, whereas it is tough to distinguish between 10K, 14K, and 18K gold with your bare eyes.

You can imagine the differences in appearance as something like the image on the right.

Now, let’s have a closer look at 10K, 14K, and 18K yellow gold, and find out the advantages and disadvantages for every yellow gold metal type.

The Magnifying Glass Test

The Magnifying Glass Test is the first home test for gold you can perform if you want to determine the authenticity of your gold product. This test is straightforward since it requires only your gold bullion or your gold jewelry and a magnifying glass.

Through this test, you must carefully inspect your gold item with the magnifying glass to find a few essential visual clues about it. These include:

If your gold piece didnt pass the Magnifying Glass Test, you can be sure that you dont have a pure gold item. But, if you want to find out its fineness, you can proceed to further testing.

For the next testing method, you may still need your magnifying glass. Since your item, especially if its jewelry, could also contain several other gold hallmarks besides the purity marking, you should examine it further to test its authenticity.

Differences Between 10k 14k And 18k Yellow Gold

When we say something is gold, it usually depicts the absolute, the glorious, and the essential. Gold is gold, and from the naked eye, we see it as a symbol of success and luxury. But some golds are only half gold and pure gold doesnt really exist. This is where 10k, 14k, and 18k yellow gold come in!

With differing gold purity and price points, you should be able to know what youre paying for. You dont want to flaunt a 10k gold thinking its 24k because a sly jeweler said so.

Another misconception is confusing karat and carat . In this post, were going to talk about the k its different variations, i.e., 10k, 14k, and 18k, and the pros and cons that can potentially save you money!

What Is A Karat

A karat is a measurement of the fineness of a piece of gold. The fineness of a piece represents theweight of fine metal that it contains in proportion to the total weight, including alloyed metals andany impurities. Diamonds and other gemstones are measured in carats per 200mg, meaning forevery 200mg of diamond, the higher the carat.

Gold uses karats. With gold, a karat is a fractional measure of purity for gold alloys, measured per 24parts whole. Pure gold that has not been mixed with any other metals is therefore the highestpossible karat, 24 karat gold.

Whilst more valuable, pure gold is rarely used for jewelry pieces because of its softness andmalleability, and tendency to scratch and mark. Therefore, it is usually alloyed with base metals foruse in jewelry, altering its malleability, color and other properties.

K White Gold: Is It Any Good

Many consumers are surprised when they walk into a jewelry store looking for 10k gold, as many jewelry only carry 14k gold and higher. This goes for all colors- white, yellow, rose, etc.

10 karat white gold is 10 parts yellow gold and 14 parts other white metals. This means that 10 karat white gold is 41.7 percent gold. Thats less than half gold!

It’s not uncommon to hear 10 karat white gold referred to as “discount gold” or “discount white gold”, since the percentage of gold in the alloy is less than half.

At Honey, we almost always opt for 14k or 18k white gold, as we believe it to be the “sweet spot”. You’ll find both as options throughout our engagement ring lines and our wedding ring lines.

White gold is generally alloyed with silver and/or palladium. A common composition for 10 karat white gold is 41.7 percent gold, 47.4 percent silver, 10 percent palladium, and 0.9 percent zinc. Sometimes, the white gold alloy can also contain nickel, although using nickel in an alloy for white gold has been made illegal in some countries, such as Australia, because of the prevalence of nickel allergies.

If you have a nickel allergy but can only afford white gold, remember to get your ring plated and re-plated with rhodium, which is hypoallergenic. The rhodium will prevent any nickel from coming into contact with your skin.

However, plenty of white gold jewelry is made entirely without nickel, so it’s often not a problem to begin with.

What Is 24k Gold Electroplated Over Brass

Real 10 karat gold chino link bracelet

This is a brass item, such as a watch, a clock, or a piece of jewelry, which has had a layer of 24k gold mechanically plated over its surface. The user receives a product that looks as if it is gold, but at a much lower cost, because the majority of the metal is brass. The finish on the product may not last as long as a solid gold item, but the decrease in cost makes this process attractive to many people.

What’s The Difference Between 10k Gold And 14k Gold

10K gold is 10 parts pure gold mixed with 14 parts other metals. When you buy an engagement ring thats made of 10k gold, approximately 41.7% of the ring is made of pure gold. Pros and Cons of 10K and 14K Gold 14K and 10K gold each have their own advantages and disadvantages, ranging from durability and cost to purity and appearance.

K Vs 18k Gold What Are The Differences And Which Is Better

There are 2 school of thoughts between consumers when choosing between 18k and 14k gold.

There are jewelry businesses and elites who feel that 18k gold is more prestigious than 14k gold because of the higher gold content. To these groups of people, any grade lower than 18k gold would be frowned upon as cheap.

Having higher gold content means the wedding ring or jewelry item is going to cost much more. Besides being more expensive, 18 karat white/yellow gold is also softer than 14 karat gold. This means it is more susceptible to wear and tear.

Personally, I belong to the other camp of people who think 14k is better. This is because I dont get bothered by social stigmas and I value practicality over what others think. The truth is, most people will never be able to tell 14k jewelry apart from 18k gold jewelry.

One of the downsides of 14k and 18k gold is that a small group of people may be allergic to the alloy materials. Nickel, a metal used to strengthen the material, can cause allergies or skin irritations .

The other downside of adding a higher composition of alloys is that the jewelry piece is more vulnerable to tarnishing overtime. This affects both types of 14k and 18k gold. The severity of tarnishing also depends on body chemistry and the environment the jewelry is worn in.

That said, dont let this information turn you off from 14 karat and 18 karat gold. The benefits far outweigh the cons of using 14k or 18k gold for your wedding band or engagement ring.
