The Gold Rewards Card justifies its $100 annual fee raise with a new feature: a $100 annual travel credit, similar to the Platinum Cards $200 annual travel credit.
The $100 annual travel credit can be applied to any booking of $100 or more on the Amex Travel website. This includes air tickets, hotels, car rentals, and cruises.
Since the travel credit also counts on refundable reservations, its essentially as good as cash and cuts down your annual fee back to $150 in future years.
Taking the previously mentioned $100 statement credit into account, current cardholders can use their Gold Rewards Card for at least a year while only going through a $50 annual fee, making the impact of the $100 raise considerably lower.

How to turn your plastic credit card into a metal card
If you cant get a metal card or if youre in love with your plastic credit cards features but you wish it was made out of metal, there are services that can turn your plastic card into metal. You can also choose your own design or etch a logo of your choice.
However, these services typically cost $150 or more, not to mention you may have to give your card information to a third party. In addition, many users have had issues at the ATM or using the tap & go feature. Are Metal Credit Cards Better
No, not necessarily. They are more durable than plastic cards, but they aren’t necessarily better than traditional cards when it comes to benefits and perks. Whether they’re “better” depends on what you’re looking for.
Metal credit cards are often marketed to those who travel extensively and have significant disposable income. They can have annual fees in the hundreds of dollars although they often also come with fantastic perks such as free airport lounge access, elite status in loyalty programs and travel statement credits. If you stay close to home, though, you may be better off with a plastic cash-back card.
Bottom line: don’t choose a credit card simply because it’s metal. If it otherwise fits your needs, consider the metal factor an added benefit.
How To Destroy A Metal Credit Card
The back of a metal credit card will usually say “do not shred.” You also can’t cut it yourself with scissors. Issuers know this, and that’s why they will usually offer the option for you to send or drop off the card to them to be destroyed.
“When a cardmember receives a new or a replacement card, they will also receive a pre-addressed envelope to send their closed or expired card back to us for proper and safe disposal,” said Ashley Dodd, a Chase spokesperson . She also says cardmembers can call the number on the back of their card to request an envelope, or they can bring their card into a branch for proper and safe disposal.
American Express offers a sustainable “Take Back” program for all of its cards, including the metal ones. It also provides a return envelope when replacement metal cards are issued, or customers can request one any time. “Cards being returned are collected and securely shredded, and then a third party processes those into refined raw materials, which are then used to produce new post-consumable goods,” confirmed a media relations spokesperson from American Express.
Capital One also recommends mailing the card back to be destroyed.
