Xbox Game Pass is a great way to play over 100 games for a monthly fee. If the library gets boring and/or you want to drop the service, this guide shows you how to cancel an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
Microsoft introduced Xbox Game Pass in June 2017. For $9.99 per month, Xbox owners had access to a rotating library of more than 100 games. The service also provides discounts on these games if you want to keep them in your digital library. Moreover, users had access to the Xbox Play Anywhere games on a Windows PC.
Two years later, Microsoft introduced a similar, stand-alone, all-you-can-eat service for Windows 10, costing $9.99 per month. The company also launched Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which combines both along with Xbox Live Gold for $14.99 per month.
That said, this guide shows you how to cancel these subscriptions. Ultimately, its all done through Microsofts website, but you can cancel Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and Xbox Live Gold on the console without accessing a PC. Cancelling Xbox Game Pass for PC requires a computer.
The Discounts Arent Worth It
Xbox offers Deals With Gold, but lets be honest, these deals are far from amazing. After having an Xbox Live Gold membership for quite some time, I cant recall the last time I actually took advantage of one of these deals.
The only types of games that Xbox ever offers a discount on are indie games, games that have received terrible reviews, or semi-old games that no one cares about anymore.
You might find some of the discounts enticing once in a while, but they just arent worth the Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Cancel Your Xbox Game Pass Subscription Using A Pc
First, open any browser and navigate to your Microsoft accounts Services & Subscriptions page. Log in to your account if needed.
Next, locate your Xbox Game Pass subscription and click the Manage link under the Xbox logo.
In our example, were canceling Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Again, if you dont have this specific plan, youll see Xbox Game Pass and/or Xbox Game Pass for PC on the list. Youll see the Xbox Live Gold subscription as well.
On the following page, click the Cancel link.

How To Cancel Xbox Live Gold Or Game Pass Subscription
If you are ready to cancel Xbox Live Gold but still want to keep your free account, heres how to do it.
Your Xbox Live Gold subscription will continue for the duration that was already paid for. After that, your account will revert back to the free Xbox Live tier.

You might receive a refund, says Microsoft, if you bought an annual subscription within the last 30 days or you bought a monthly subscription and youre cancelling within 30 days of your last renewal date. If you want to try to cancel, go back to the Services & subscriptions page and click on the « Cancel » link.

How To Turn On Recurring Billing
When recurring billing is turned on for a Microsoft subscription, youll be billed for your subscription on your renewal date.
Sign in to Services & subscriptions with your Microsoft account. If you have more than one Microsoft account, make sure you’re signing in with the one that applies to the subscription you want to set up recurring billing for.
Locate the subscription you’d like to set up with recurring billing.
Note: If you can’t find it on the list, it might be a subscription from a third party, such as Apple or Best Buy. Contact them directly for managing your subscription and billing.
Select Turn on recurring billing.
If you see an upcoming payment date next to your subscription, you already have recurring billing turned on and you dont have to do anything else.
If your subscription has already expired, select Renew to renew your subscription. Recurring billing will be turned on automatically when you renew your subscription.
If you see Paid with pre-paid card next to the subscription expiration date, you paid for the subscription with a pre-paid code and you can’t turn on recurring billing. You can buy a new one at Microsoft Store when the subscription expires.
Check your inbox for an email that confirms recurring billing. If you don’t see it in your inbox, check your junk mail or spam folder.
How To Turn Off Recurring Billing
If you want to see out the duration of your subscription until the next billing date, then you can turn off recurring billing. When the subscription period ends, your account will revert to free membership.
To do this, go to the Xbox website and sign in using your Microsoft account.
Tap the account icon in the top-right corner.
In the pop-up menu below, tap the three-dots menu icon. Youll then need to click Subscriptions to access your membership subscriptions.
Click Manage in the Xbox Live Gold section. If you have an Xbox Game Pass instead, click Manage in that section instead.
Next to your payment information, click Change.
To stop the next payment, click the Turn off recurring billing option in the pop-up menu below.
Confirm your choice by clicking Confirm.
Once confirmed, your Xbox Live membership will continue until the next payment date. When you reach this date, the subscription to Xbox Live will end, and your account will revert to the free tier.

Cancelling Xbox Live Subscription On Your Computer
The easiest way to cancel Xbox live is to do it on the Xbox website as this will confirm your Xbox cancellation immediately and in case you are eligible for a refund you can apply for it too.
- Visit xbox com > > Click on your profile picture & the 3 dots next to it
- Select Microsoft Settings from the drop-down menu
- You will see the Xbox Settingsoptions on your left-hand side from the dropdown

You must cancel your Xbox subscription online. You can’t use your console. However, there are a few important things you should know before you proceed. But network-wide Xbox Live Gold changes, introduced in April 2021, lift the requirement for a subscription with many staple features. Free-to-play games like Fortnite no longer require the Xbox Live Gold for multiplayer, while other once Gold-exclusive features like Party Chat and Looking For Group opened to all free users.
Existing paid Xbox Live Gold subscribers who stick to a handful of free-to-play games may opt to drop the service. By canceling your Xbox Live Gold subscription, understand that you’ll be losing access to all your previous benefits of the service. In the future, multiplayer for most games and other Xbox Live Gold services will be inaccessible, including access to free titles previously obtained via Games with Gold.
