Who Gets A Check

When Will SSI/SSP Recipients Receive the California $600-$1200 Golden State Stimulus?

Individuals and households making between $30,000 and $75,000 a year would get a $600 payment. All households making up to $75,000 with at least one child, including immigrants in the country illegally who file taxes, would get an extra $500 payment.

Its the second round of cash payments given by the state in response to the pandemic. Earlier this year, people making less than $30,000 got a $600 payment. Immigrants making up to $75,000 who file taxes, including those also living in the country illegally, also got the check. State officials chose a higher eligibility limit for those individuals because they didnt get federal stimulus checks.

All combined, the state would spend $11.9 billion on direct cash payments.

Stimulus Check: How Many Social Security Holders Might Miss Out On The Golden State Stimulus

Earned income is a limitation to receiving tax benefits at the federal or state level. Income that comes from unemployment or Social Security is a common example of this. In order to qualify for the second round of Golden State Stimulus checks the California Tax Franchise Board put out a list of income that couldnt count toward the income requirements.

The exact number of people who will not get the Golden State Stimulus check is not known but there were 6.1m Social Security beneficiaries in California back in 2020.

Some of the residents who get monthly benefits payments might have filed a tax return and declared some form of income in 2020. This counted toward the California AGI minimum of $1 needed to receive a Golden State Stimulus check.

When will SSI recipients receive the Golden State Stimulus?

We passed the recovery package to get money into the pockets of Californians who were hit hardest by this pandemic, and thats exactly what the Golden State Stimulus is doing, Governor Newsom said of the payments. These are the first payments to those who filed their taxes before 1 March. The state began sending out payments 15 April.

For those that filed before 23 April, they should see their stimulus payment arriving sometime starting around 15 May. Depending on how the payment was made it will take two to six weeks to receive. Those who use direct deposit to get their refund could see the money in their account two weeks after it is disbursed. While those that receive paper checks will have to wait between four and six weeks.

Californians who have not filed their 2020 taxes should know they may qualify for these funds, and we look forward to building on programs like this that invest in and support Californians in the months ahead, Governor Newsom said. In order to receive a payment, filers must file before 15 October, 2021.

The state will continue to send payments twice a month as the FTB processes state tax returns however if you file after 23 April you may have to wait longer. The FTB says that direct deposits could take up to 45 days and paper checks 60 days after a return is processed.

Social Security: How Much Can Draw Upon And Earn In 2022 Is There A Limit

California approved two rounds of Golden State Stimulus payments to residents across the state. The first round was targeted at those who were Earned Income Tax Credit recipients and those ineligible for federal stimulus checks.

The second round covered all residents who claimed between $1 and $75,000 of adjusted gross income and filed a tax return for 2020 giving access to the stimulus measure to about two thirds of Californians. But some of the states most vulnerable were still potentially left out, those whose only income were benefits excluded from adjusted gross income qualification.

Some Updated Info For Californians On Ssi Who Are Waiting For Their Golden State Grant Checks

It seems the California senate budget committee is aware of the federal foot-dragging to get stimulus money out to people on SSI. The feds seem to be also less than forthcoming when it comes to working with the California government to get the Golden State Grant out to California residents on SSI.

The committee is proposing a bill called AB 213, which would empower the state government to issue the $600 checks without further federal involvement. The payments would be added to each recipients regular monthly SSI payment. Hopefully this will speed things the fuck up!

You can read a simple summary of the proposed bill below. Its at the end of the PDF.

Do I Qualify For A $600 Or $1100 Payment

$600 for SSI/SSP Recipients Is Approved in New Golden State Stimulus ...

The Golden State Stimulus II payments are different from the Golden State Stimulus I payments that went out earlier this year. GSS I payments a one-time check of either $600 or $1,200 went out to those who typically earned less than $30,000 and received the states Earned Income Tax Credit, or CalEITC, or those who filed their taxes with an Individual Tax Identification Number, or ITIN.

GSS II has been expanded so that more Californians qualify. Youre eligible for a $600 payment if youve been a California resident for more than half of the 2020 tax year . You need to also meet the following requirements:

  • Your California Adjusted Gross Income, or CA AGI, was $75,000 or less for the 2020 tax year.
  • You cannot be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer.

If you dont qualify for GSS II, see if you might be eligible for GSS I. Californians who received the earlier GSS I payment could be eligible for a GSS II check for $500 or $1,000 only if they claimed a qualifying child or relative as a dependent on their 2020 tax return.

Besides those who already received GSS I and have no dependents, there are others who are excluded from GSS II payments. Californians whose income is exclusively from other benefits, like Social Security, CalWorks, unemployment or state disability, do not qualify. California Has Been Sending $600 One

If you didnt qualify for the first round of Californias $600 Golden State Stimulus checks, you might have another chance.

No state, including this state, has ever rebated more direct dollars back into the pockets of taxpayers, Newsom said Friday while revealing his revised spending plan for the 2021-22 tax year. Ironically, his administration claims the tax rebates help California to meet a decades-old spending limit passed by anti-tax advocates.

Taxpayers earning up to $75,000 in adjusted gross income will qualify for a California stimulus check if lawmakers approve Newsoms plan. In cases where two taxpayers file jointly, the threshold is $75,000 for their combined incomes. The governor says that covers 78% of California taxpayers and will benefit two in three Californians.

Families with at least one child or other dependent will get an extra $500 boost. Families with undocumented workers who file taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, will get a $1,000 boost if they have at least one dependent. Undocumented immigrants have been excluded from thousands of dollars in federal stimulus checks, and potentially tens of thousands in unemployment benefits.

Its the right thing to do, Newsom said. When the federal government was not able to provide those supports, the state of California will step in to do what we can.

Heres who would be eligible for the Golden State Stimulus check under Newsoms expansion:

A Fourth Stimulus Check Is Coming For Some Workers

In September, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that a fourth stimulus check payment is coming for some Americans. Meatpacking workers, farmworkers, and grocery employees who were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic will be eligible to receive grants of up to $600 per person. The funds will come from a $700 million program authorized to assist workers in these industries.

It isnt clear how the funds would be distributed, although up to $20 million of its set aside from employees in grocery stores. The financing was initially approved under the American Rescue Plan Act, which the Biden administration signed into law in March. However, the payment this time is expected to come from state agencies and tribal governments instead of the federal government.

The California Franchise Tax Board will send payments based on a filers 2020 tax return. In order to receive a check, a tax return must be filed, regardless if a person is required or not to submit one. To receive a check, the state tax authority must receive a return by 15 October 2021.

Californians who havent filed a tax return yet can expect extra wait times before they will receive their payment. The Franchise Tax Board says those who filed after August 20, 2021 and receive their tax refund via direct deposit, should allow up to 45 days for 2020 tax returns to be processed. Tax returns that are processed after the scheduled ZIP code payment will have to wait at least 60 days to receive their Golden State Stimulus check. In both cases some returns may take longer to process delaying payment further.
