Before we get to our tests that will help you decide what is real and what is fake, it helps to go over some basic definitions. If you have shopped for gold jewelry lately, you have probably seen a few different terms describing the jewelry itself.
The three main terms you will hear are Solid gold, gold-filled, and gold plated. So, what do those all mean? Do all of those types include real gold? Lets discuss!

Test Against A Ceramic Tile
This test involves scratching your gold item however, you should be able to get results with minimum damage. Find or purchase an unglazed ceramic tile. It must be unglazed since tile glaze affects the results. Gently rub your item against the tile until you see fragments of gold flaking off. If it leaves a gold streak, theres a good chance your item is real gold. A black mark indicates the gold is fake.
How To Determine The Karats For White Gold Jewelry

Karat marks to look for check for the karat stamps on the white gold jewelry, often K or Kt. 18k or 18KT white gold jewelry, for example, is made of 75% pure gold.
Often, the purity of white gold is determined using parts-per-thousand marking, which denotes the thousandths of the white gold alloy that is actually made of pure gold. So, 18k gold is also 750.

How To Tell If Gold Is Real: Bonus Tests
We don’t highly recommend these tests because they don’t give conclusive results. However, they cost nothing and in no way damage your precious gold. So, why not give them a try?
a) The Sound Test
Strike the gold piece with a metal object and listen for how it sounds. Gold makes a high-pitched, sonorous sound that rings on for a long time. Other gold-lookalike metals like copper or zinc will create a duller and shorter sound.
However, you cannot completely rely on the result because the sound of a 24k and 18k article will not be the same, although both are genuine.
b) The Bite Test
You can check the authenticity of gold by biting it, which is not reliable but very popular. You must have seen Olympians biting their gold medals. This is done because gold is a very soft metal, so it can be easily bitten and the teeth marks will appear on the surface.
The purer the piece, the deeper the teeth marks will be. The texture of gold is also much smoother than other metals, such as silver and nickel, making it easier to chew and identify in comparison.
Should You Buy Gemstones
Absolutely! With their unique symbolism and gorgeous colors as well as sparkle, gemstones are a great way to flaunt your personality and awesome style. Apart from this, due to their rarity and ever-increasing demand, these glittering beauties make a great investment one thats sure to earn you high returns in the long run.

The Ceramic Test: Unglazed Ceramic Tile
This test is actually quite simple and takes only a second to do. To do it, you’ll need an unglazed piece of ceramic, such as the unglazed bottom of a plate. If the ceramic is glazed, this method will not work.
To do this, simply pick your gold piece and carefully drag it across the unglazed ceramic surface so that it creates a streak on it. A black or otherwise dark-colored streak means your piece is not made of gold, while a gold streak indicates that it is genuine.
Again, be careful when doing this, and bear in mind that your item may end up scratched. Usually, a little polish is enough to do away with the marks, but if done improperly, the piece may require repair. Always use common sense when conducting these tests.
Caution
Try other tests first, and use this streak test only if you are still unsure whether your gold jewelry is made of actual gold. This test, when done improperly, can scratch or otherwise damage your gold piece. When in doubt, seek the opinion of a professional jeweler.

How To Tell If Gold Is Real: The Secret Weapon: Acid Tests
How to tell if gold is real? When it does not react with any acidic element. So, you can use vinegar or nitric acid to find out its authenticity.
a) Testing with Vinegar
Gold is almost inert, so vinegar’s acidic element cannot change its color or properties. Use white vinegar since it’s the most acidic of all types.
Just add a couple of drops of vinegar to the jewelry piece and see if the color changes. It’s fake if it does otherwise, you have a real piece. Give it at least 15 minutes to ensure enough time for the vinegar to set in and cause a reaction.
b) Testing Gold with Nitric Acid
Nitric acid does not react with gold, but it can melt the common metals in fake items. Careless application may ruin the ornament.
Use a touchstone or a jewelry engraver to create a tiny but slightly deep scratch in a part that is not easily visible. Pour a few drops of acid on the scratch mark and if it turns green or milk-white, the piece is not real.
You can do the same test with aqua regia too, which can melt gold. Pour a drop on the scratch mark to see if it disappears. If it does, your jewelry piece is genuine.
How To Tell If Gold Is Real: The X
An XRF Spectrometer will give you the most accurate answer without damaging the prized possession in any way. You can examine any type of gold item with this machine.
A spectrometer sends X-rays through any item to charge its atoms into a higher power level. When the charged atoms cool down, they release radiation, which the spectrometer can detect and analyze.
Gold’s radiation is different from any other metal, so it will be easy to identify the authenticity of your item.

How To Tell If Gold Is Real Or Fake
What makes gold real or fake? Most standards around the world identify anything with less than 41.7% or 10 karats of gold as fake. The most reliable way to identify whether your item is real gold, or not, is to have it appraised by a certified jeweler. However, before you take your item in for a professional appraisal, there are some simple methods for discovering whether your gold item is real or fake.
How To Tell If Gold Is Real Using Water

This test wont damage your jewelry, so you can try it out even if you dont have access to other chemicals.
Fill a container with enough water to submerge your item with room to spare. Drop your gold piece into the filled container.
Gold will sink quickly, while floating or moving very slowly means you likely have fake gold on your hands. This is also true if the item floats.
Tarnishing and rust after being in water is also a sign of fake gold.

Fineness Of Gold: 10k 12k 14k 18k And How To Tell If Gold Is Real
This post is the first in my in-depth 5-part series on gold, which will teach you vital information to never be cheated by unscrupulous gold sellers and get the exact piece you want at a fair price. In this guide, you will learn what is pure gold and solid gold, the different gold grades, and how to tell if something is real gold.
WHAT IS PURE GOLD? HOW MANY KARATS IS PURE GOLD?
Gold purity is measured by karat, which is an unit of purity. The maximum karat for gold is 24 karat. Therefore, pure gold is 24 karats, or 24k gold. However, you will hardly find 24k pure gold in jewelry. As pure gold is too soft, jewellers usually mix gold with a metal like copper or silver to make a gold alloy of lower karat such as 18k or 14k gold.
GOLD PURITY MEASURE
The most common gold grades are 18k, 14k, 12k and 10k gold. Their number indicates the percentage of gold in the grade the higher the number, the more gold it has. An 18k gold piece is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, a 14k gold is 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals, so on and so forth.
The value should goes up with the number, so a 10K gold item is much less valuable than an 18K gold item of the same design.
Different gold grade 10k, 12k, 14k, 18k explained
- 18k is 75% pure gold
- 14k is 58.3% pure gold*
> 18k & 14k gold is ideal for fine jewelry.
- 12k is 50% pure gold
- 10k is 41.7% pure gold^
> 12k & 10k gold is not acceptable for fine jewelry.
Note:
PURE GOLD VS SOLID GOLD
Is There An Easy Way To Tell If Something Is Real Gold
Divide the volume by the weight of your gold item to determine its density. According to this formula, the density of a given object is equal to 40 grams divided by 2.2 milliliters, resulting in an average density of 18.18 grams per milliliter. Because gold has an actual density of 19.3 g/mL, it is likely that your item is made of real gold.

Nitric Acid Gold Test
This method is only recommended for scrap jewelry, not gold jewelry you intend on wearing. Essentially, you make a tiny indent or scratch with a nail file. Then youll drop nitric acid into the scratch. If theres a visible reaction, the gold is fake. If nothing happens, the gold is most likely real. Take care when working with acid as this method is best left to a trained professional in a safe environment.
Gold Testing: Ways To Know If Your Jewelry Is The Real Deal
You cannot tell the difference between real and fake gold just by at first glance. That is why it is easy for dishonest sellers to dupe people into buying fake items. Fortunately, there are ways to know if your jewelry is the real deal or merely fools gold:
Look for marks
Manufacturers put stamps in the clasps of bracelets, necklaces and rings to let you know its purity. If you do not find one in your jewelry, chances are it may not be genuine. Older jewelries are the exception, however, as it was only recently that the method was applied. Suspicious marks, dents, shapes and discolorations around the edges are also some of the telltale signs of fake gold.
Check the statistics
People have standards on the size and weight of real gold depending on the karat. Research the standard dimensions of pure gold thoroughly. Using calipers, measure the diameter, thickness, size and weight of your jewelry. If it does not match the usual dimensions of its kind, then it is most probably gold clad or one that is mixed with other metals. Drop your jewelry in the water real gold usually sinks.
Drop nitric acid
Real gold does not react to nitric acid. Try the acid test if physical examination does not work. Scratch lightly on the jewelrys surface and apply a small amount of nitric acid on it using a dropper. If the surface turns green, your jewelry might be gold clad. A milky substance appears if your gold contains sterling.
Apply cosmetics
Use a magnet

Buy A Chemical Testing Kit
There are lots of gold testing kits on the market, and theyre not particularly expensive. But be warned, they will cause a degree of damage to the item being tested.
Most test kits use nitric acid. This is the same approach that will be taken if you take your item to a jeweler to be tested.
The kits will contain different solutions of nitric acid to test different purities of gold. Some also include gold needles. These allow you to compare the results of the test on the needle with the results on your object.
To begin with, youll need to use a sharp tool to scratch away the top surface of the metal. Try to keep the area as small as possible to minimize visible damage. Next, place the item to be tested in a stainless steel container and put on a pair of latex gloves.
Take the nitric acid and apply a small drop onto the area where youve scraped away the top surface. If theres no reaction, your item is real gold. If it turns green, its fake. If the acid turns gold, your item is made of gold-plated brass. If it turns milky, its usually gold-plated silver.
If your item is gold, you can then go on to use the touchstone method to test its purity. This involves using testing needles of different gold purities, and different acid solutions. Comparing the reactions of the testing needles with the reactions of your item will allow you to identify the gold purity.
Confirm The Results With A Professional Jeweler
Finally, all the tests above can help you get a better idea whether you have real gold or not. But take note that none of these are conclusive ways to test gold- only a professional jeweler can give you the definite answer you need.
Most importantly, they know how to check the purity of gold without damaging your piece. So if you have an heirloom jewelry or an item with sentimental value, youre better off giving this responsibility to a professional.
