Yellow Gold: The Timeless And Prestigious Choice

Platinum vs Gold 2021

Gold is naturally yellow. Natural golds beauty and strength are enhanced by blending it with small amounts of zinc and copper. The amounts of zinc and copper can be varied to make the gold a lighter or darker shade of yellow.

What are yellow golds advantages?

Yellow gold is well-loved because it never loses its colour and goes especially well with matte skin. It is also resistant against the wear and tear of daily life.

Does yellow gold have any disadvantages?

In rare cases, people who are allergic to metal can react to one of the components in yellow gold. Yellow gold is, however, the most hypoallergenic of all gold variations and it is unusual for someone to have an allergy to it.

What type of care does yellow gold require?

Yellow gold needs to be cleaned and polished occasionally, but does not require any special care.

Yellow gold is timeless. Fashions change, but yellow gold maintains its prestigious beauty and is often matched with diamonds to create stunning engagement and wedding rings.

Platinum Vs Gold Maintenance

Rose and yellow gold require very little maintenance. Simply place your jewelry in warm, soapy water and leave it for about half an hour. Then remove it and scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush.

If you want to, you can add soda water to the mixture. The bubbles will help lift dirt and grime from the surface of the metal.

After cleaning, pat your jewelry dry with a lint-free cloth, or leave it to air dry. The same cleaning routine will work equally well for white gold. But remember, you will eventually have to replace the rhodium plating.

One thing to note about having your jewelry replated is that the process can damage softer gemstones. If your jewelry will include stones like turquoise, topaz, peridot, pearls and opals, it shouldnt be replated. Look for options in a different colored gold or in platinum instead.

Warm soapy water is also effective as a cleaner for platinum. But note that while it will remove any surface dirt, it wont make the metal any brighter. If your platinum has taken on a grey sheen and you want to restore its original shine, it will need to be professionally repolished.

Slowly tilt your metal item to see if the magnet sticks to the object by the magnetic pull, or if it slides off onto the ground. If the metal attracts the magnet, you know it must be an alloy mixture and not a precious metal.

Why White Gold Has No Resale Value

White gold has a lower resale value than yellow gold. The reason white gold is worth less than yellow gold is because alloy cost less but it also means the purity of your gold jewellery is diluted. Another big no-no is to invest in white gold. Buy it if you like it and can afford it, but not to invest in it.

Are Diamonds Bulletproof

Why is platinum jewelry more expensive than gold ...

It doesnt seem unreasonable to wonder whether diamonds are bulletproof, since diamond is the worlds hardest natural material. Diamonds are not however bulletproof in general, as while they are hard, they are not particularly tough and their brittleness will cause them to shatter when struck by a bullet.

Platinum Vs Gold: Color

Color is the most distinguishable difference between platinum and gold. Platinum is exclusively white, and most people associate gold with yellow. However, gold comes in many shades with white gold being the closest to platinum in appearance.

White gold contains alloys of durable metals like nickel, zinc, and copper with a rhodium plating. Platinum, on the other hand, has a pure 95-98% platinum composition with minimal alloys mixed in.

With white gold, you have a rhodium plating that gives it a bright silvery-white color and protects your ring. But, over time, the rhodium plating fades away and gives the white gold a more yellow appearance. When that happens, you can have it replated by your jeweler to restore its white color. Platinum, on the other hand, will never turn yellow as its color occurs naturally.

Both gold and platinum have a lustrous surface, but platinum maintains the shiny look longer than white gold. White gold will lose its brilliance after a few years and need polishing and replating.

Platinum: The Strongest And Most Durable Alternative

Platinum is a dense, but malleable precious metal. History suggests that it was first mined in Ecuador about 2,500 years ago. At that time, indigenous people used it for decorating figurines and making jewellery.

In the 1700s, platinum made its way from South America to Europe where scientists spent years experimenting with it before it began to be used for household items and decorations.

In the late 1800s platinum began to be popular for jewellery. It was used for rings, bracelets, necklaces and even a crown. This crown was made for Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to use for her husbands coronation. The entire frame of the crown was made of platinum and then covered with close to 3,000 diamonds.

Platinum jewellery was almost forgotten during World War 1 and 2, but in the last few decades, it has been steadily regaining ground in the jewellery market. Once again brides and grooms are exchanging platinum rings that represent the strength and endurance of true love.

Is pure platinum used in jewellery?

No. Pure platinum is too soft to be used for jewellery. However, platinum only needs to be mixed with a very small amount of other metals in order to be hard enough for jewellery.

The most common metals to be mixed with platinum are palladium, rhodium, iridium and other platinum group metals, as well as common metals, such as copper and cobalt.

How Do I Know What Kind Of Metal I Am Buying

If you are buying your jewelry from a reputable jeweler, it is relatively easy to check to see if the jewelry you’re buying is platinum or gold. All jewelry sold in the U.S. must be stamped with a common quality mark that shows the percentage of platinum or gold used in the metal.

These marks are, most commonly: Platinum, Plat, or Pt. followed by the percentage of platinum used, for example: Pt. 1000 , Pt999 .

Other common platinum alloys are: 950Pt which is 950 parts per thousand platinum and 50 parts other metals 900Pt which is 900 parts per thousand platinum and 100 parts other metals and 850Pt which is 850 parts per thousand platinum and 150 parts other metals. Any jewelry item containing 950 parts platinum or better could be marked with only Platinum or Plat.

Gold jewelry can be identified by the following hallmarks:

Pure Gold is 24-Karat and is always 100% pure.

18-Karat gold or 750

refers to 41% pure gold in the content.

The higher the percentage of pure gold, the more expensive the jewelry.

It Comes Down To Long

Why Platinum Turns Dull Faster Than White Gold

Gold has long been popular as a financial asset and for its aesthetic value. Platinum is another precious metal that’s used in jewelry and also has industrial applications. Both can be good investment choices, but there are differences in terms of long-term stability and price fluctuations.

Why Polishing Too Much Hurts Your Platinum Ring

Polishing a Ring

One of my new clients had been married for six months and gone back and had her platinum wedding band polished up six times. Her little band was thin to begin with and I explained that if she kept polishing it, it would get too thin after a while.

Unlike the microdents and scratches platinum gets when hit or ground against a harder surface, when your platinum ring is professionally polished, we need to even the surface to hold the high shine. The polishing wheel and technique remove platinum from your ring.

Platinum Vs Gold Skin Sensitivity

Both platinum and gold in their pure form are hypoallergenic. That means that you wont have to worry about jewelry made of platinum or high purity yellow gold triggering skin problems.

The other metals added to white and rose gold, however, can cause irritation for some people with sensitive skin.

With white gold, the chance of problems occurring is reduced by choosing jewelry thats been plated in rhodium. Rhodium is hypoallergenic.

But note that the rhodium plating will wear off over time. Precisely how long this takes depends on how often the jewelry is worn. You can extend the life of the plating by removing rings when gardening or doing housework. Its also sensible to avoid wearing them next to other jewelry, which can abrade it.

If you have sensitive skin, youll need to have your white gold jewelry replated as soon as it shows signs of wear. Platinum will be a much better option.

And if you choose yellow gold, youll want to choose gold with high purity. Some people with skin allergies will find a 10-karat gold piece of jewelry causes itching and a rash. Those same people may have no reaction from a piece made of 18-karat gold.

Hallmarks On Gold And Platinum Engagement Rings

As you look for the perfect engagement or wedding ring, it is important that you be aware of the hallmarks located on the inside of the rings band.

Hallmarks are small symbols that guarantee the purity of the precious metal used in the ring.

The number of hallmarks that a ring has depends on its country of origin. The United Kingdom, for example, requires hallmarked rings to have three symbols, while here in Belgium we usually only put one.

The three most common hallmarks on a ring provide the following information:

  • Sponsor The symbol of the person or company who submitted the ring to be hallmarked. Along with other possibilities, the sponsor can be the rings manufacturer, an importer or its retailer.
  • Assay Office The symbol of the assay office that tested the precious metal and gave the ring its hallmark.
  • Standard of Fineness This symbol is the hallmark that is primarily used here in Belgium. It is perhaps the most important hallmark of all because it indicates the fineness or purity of the precious metal. The standard of fineness measures the purity of the precious metal content in 1000 parts.Platinum rings generally have a greater percentage of platinum than other metals. Their standard of fineness mark is usually 950 parts of pure platinum out of a total of 1,000 parts.

The symbol used to represent the year of the hallmark is always a letter. S represents the year 2017, T is for 2018 and U represents 2019.

Platinum Vs Gold: Appearance

Platinum and White Gold vs Silver for Your Engagement Ring ...

Platinum and white gold look very similar to each other, but platinum will retain its appearance for longer because of its purity and strength. White gold will have to be re-plated every few years which isnt a big deal but its slightly more work.

If youre not married to a white-colored metal, yellow gold is a great option for a number of reasons. It requires less maintenance than other shades and, if youre shopping for an engagement ring, you can opt for a slightly tinted diamond.

A diamond with a tint will be noticeable against a white metal like platinum. However, a slightly tinted diamond will contrast well against yellow gold and appear to be colorless.

Red, pink, and rose golds all have different mixes of copper and silver with the gold to alter the color. This can be a great option if you like the rosey color and want a durable piece of jewelry thats also affordable.

Rose Gold: The Modern And Romantic Choice

How is rose gold made?

Copper is used to transform naturally yellow gold into beautiful shades of rose. Darker shades of rose gold are made by mixing 75% gold with 25% copper, while the lighter shades are made by decreasing the copper and adding in a small percentage of a white metal, such as silver.

What are rose golds advantages?

One of rose golds best advantages is that it has a contemporary beauty and modern style. It is also great because it never loses its colour and is strong to resist scratches and deformation.

Does rose gold have any disadvantages?

Similar to yellow gold, there are some people who may have an allergic reaction to one of the components in rose gold, but this is rare.

What type of care does rose gold require?

It doesnt require any special care and only needs to be cleaned and polished occasionally.

Rose gold is particularly feminine and when combined with pavé set diamonds, it creates especially romantic engagement rings.
