How To Clean New Earrings

The cleaning tips below can be used on most new earrings or for general earring maintenance. Follow these steps to learn how to clean your earrings properly:

  • Wash hands thoroughly.
  • Find a small glass or plastic container and place the earrings inside.
  • Create your own earring cleaner by filling the container halfway with hydrogen peroxide and let sit for twenty minutes, or overnight if they are heavily soiled.
  • Remove the earrings from the solution and use a small jewelry brush to remove any leftover grime.
  • Rinse earrings carefully under warm water and place them on a clean cloth to dry.
  • If the unthinkable should happen and you drop one or more of your earrings down the drain, call your local Mr. Rooter for fast, reliable plumbing services to retrieve it.
  • Use Aluminium Foil And Baking Soda For A Deep Clean

This deep clean method is perfect for cleaning heavily tarnished gold plated jewellery. It will work wonders in restoring its brilliance and removing severe cases of tarnish. Not only that but this method is gentle on the gold plating because it doesnt require abrasive contact with the jewellery. The chemical reaction between the solution and the jewellery will remove any tarnish whilst not being harsh on the gold plating.

    • Line a glass bowl with aluminium foil. Make sure the shiny side of the foil is facing upwards
    • Add one tablespoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of salt to the bowl.
    • Add enough hot water to the bowl so that the powders dissolve and ensure that there is enough of the solution to fully submerge your jewellery.
    • Submerge your gold plated jewellery in the solution and leave for several minutes
    • Youll begin to notice black and yellow flakes float away from the jewellery. This is the sulfur, which is what caused the oxidation of the gold in the first place. These flakes will be attracted to the aluminium and will float towards it.
    • Once the tarnish has mostly come off the gold plating, remove the jewellery from the bowl and rub with a lint free cloth.
    • Rinse the gold plated items in warm running water and dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.

Cleaning Jewelry : How to Clean a Gold Necklace

While jewellery cleaning is do-able at home, you need to be aware that cleaning jewellery is complex, depending on the surface you’re working with.

Diamond, gold, silver and pearls are all different types of materials with varying properties and reactions to substances. As such, you’ll need to clean your various types of earrings differently, rather than adopt the same approach for every pair.

Sound complicated? Just follow the instructions set out below.

Pearl: To clean pearl earrings, you’ll need to be quite cautious isolating the pearl front from the metal back. You can’t immerse pearl earrings in water as soaking them will weaken the material. To remove dirt, you’ll need to use a disinfectant on the metal back and a paste-like mixture on the front. To create a paste, you should take a jewellery cleaner and add a drop of water to form a thick solution you can apply with a small, soft-bristled brush or toothbrush. This method can also clean gemstone earrings or costume earrings that have various elements. If in doubt, use this isolated method as it doesn’t require earrings to come into contact with water or harsh chemicals to get clean.
