Release Of Dollars By The Us Treasury: The Gsa Sale
Because of the size and weight of the dollar coins, they circulated minimally throughout their history, except in the West As a result, the coins were generally shipped to Washington and stored in the vaults of the U.S. Treasury at times these stores numbered into the hundreds of millions.

While still relatively expensive in circulated grades, uncirculated examples can be had for a modest amount over common dates.

Sacagawea gave birth to her son, Jean-Baptiste, in a fort near the Hidatsa-Mandan villages in North Dakota, where the expedition wintered over. They departed again soon after, and Sacagawea carried her infant son slung on her back, Native American style.

Are They Illegal To Own
Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States Code titled Mutilation, diminution, and falsification of coins covers the legality of plating and colorized coins. This law provides criminal penalties for Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States. The statute continues to focus on the intent of the individual must be fraudulent. In other words, if you transform or change the appearance of a United States coin and disclosed to the buyer when you sell it as a modified or altered coin, you are not trying to deceive or defraud anybody. However, if these marketers tried to sell these as solid gold coins when in fact they are only plated, that would be a violation of the law because they are trying to defraud you.
Even though plating coins is not illegal, the United States Mint does not actively endorse plating, colorizing, engraving, or performing any other modifications to coins. The mint has in the past sold coins mounted on spoons, Christmas ornaments, or jewelry. The key difference here is that the coins are unaltered and are not being sold with the intent of defrauding the public.

Liberty Head V Nickel
This coin is not quite as old as some on this list, but that doesnt stop it from being among the most valuable. In fact, its among the rarest coins around. The U.S. Mint struck the Liberty V Nickel from 1883 to 1913, but just a reputed five coins were minted in the final years vintage.
Since the year 2000, specimens of the coin have hit the auction block a handful of times, and have fetched multiple millions of dollars. One version reportedly sold for $4.15 million in 2005 and then was flipped for $5 million in 2007. Another specimen hit the market for more than $3.7 million in 2010, while still another traded hands at a reported price of $3 to $4 million in 2018.

The 2000 P Cheerios Dollar Coin
The 2000 P Cheerios dollar is a special edition dollar coin that was issued only in boxes of Cheerios during the first release promotion of the Sacagawea dollar, the United States Mint partnered with General Mills to put 5,500 coins into boxes of Cheerios as a promotion for the new dollar coins.
Some of these dollar coins were later discovered to be different from the rest of the 2000 P dollar coins there have only been a small amount found of these special Cheerios dollars.

Design Of Type 2 And 3 Dollars
The Type 2 and 3 gold dollars depict Liberty as a Native American princess, with a fanciful feathered headdress not resembling any worn by any Indian tribe. This image is an inexact copy of the design Longacre had made for the three-dollar piece, and is one of a number of versions of Liberty that Longacre created based on the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture then on display in a Philadelphia museum. For the reverse, Longacre adapted the “agricultural wreath” he had created for the reverse of the three-dollar piece, composed of cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat, blending the produce of North and South. This wreath would appear, later in the 1850s, on the Flying Eagle cent.
Art historian Cornelius Vermeule deprecated the Indian princess design used by Longacre for the obverses of the Types 2 and 3 gold dollar, and for the three-dollar piece, “the ‘princess’ of the gold coins is a banknote engraver’s elegant version of folk art of the 1850s. The plumes or feathers are more like the crest of the Prince of Wales than anything that saw the Western frontiers, save perhaps on a music hall beauty.”

Sacagawea Defends The Expedition Against Attack
William Clark, in the journals he kept during the expedition, credited Sacagawea’s presence with preventing the hostile actions of the native people they encountered. Because Native Americans couldn’t even imagine the notion of a war party traveling with a woman and a baby, they automatically assumed that the expedition came in peace. It is almost sure that her presence prevented many attacks and likely saved several lives.
The Life Of Sacagawea
Sacagawea was the Shoshone Indian who assisted the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. From 1804-1806, while still a teenager, she guided the adventurers from the Northern Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean and back. Her husband and their son, who was born during the trip, also accompanied the group.
At about the age of 11, Sacagawea was captured by a Hidatsa raiding party and taken from her Shoshone tribe. She was later sold into slavery with the Missouri River Mandans. They then sold her to Toussaint Charbonneau, a French-Canadian fur trader, who made her his wife.
Hired by Lewis and Clark
Charbonneau was hired by Captains Lewis and Clark primarily because of the skills his wife, Sacagawea, possessed. Sacagawea was only 15 years old at the time and already six months pregnant. Despite these possible limitations for such an arduous journey, she knew several Indian languages, and being Shoshone, could help Lewis and Clark make contact with her people and acquire horses that were crucial to the success of the mission.

Civil War And Recommissioning 18611879
Secession and Confederate seizure
The New Orleans Mint operated continuously from 1838 until January 26, 1861, when Louisiana from the United States. On January 29, the Secession Convention reconvened at New Orleans and passed an ordinance that allowed Federal employees to remain in their posts, but as employees of the state of Louisiana. On February 5, 1861, during the proceedings of the Convention of the State of Louisiana in New Orleans, the committee appointed by the Convention to take an inventory on February 1, 1861, of public property in the hands of the officers of the late Federal government reported that the Sub-Treasurers vault at the mint contained $483,983 in gold and silver coins. The National Archives records in Rockville, Maryland, indicate the $483,983 consisted of $308,771 in gold coins and $175,212.08 in silver coins. The only gold coin produced in January, 1861 was the $20 gold double-eagle. This means 15,438 $20 gold coins were minted by the New Orleans Mint during January, 1861. Mint coinage records for the $20 1861-O gold double-eagle indicate only 5,000 $20 gold pieces were minted by the Federal Government in January, 1861. This discrepancy is explained in a Numismatist Journal article.
