Getting More From Your Xbox

If you’ve just got an Xbox, you may be confused about what Xbox Live and Xbox Live Gold are. In short, Xbox Live is free to use and gives you basic online functionality, while Xbox Live Gold has a monthly fee that lets you play games online and comes with special bonuses.

Things get a little more confusing when you learn about the Xbox Game Pass, but it too is straightforward. It’s a monthly subscription that unlocks a vast library of games for you to play right away.

Xbox Live Gold Changes: What’s New For 2021

Microsoft just rolled out the biggest changes to Xbox Live Gold since launch, in turn shaking up the value proposition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners. The drastic policy shift changes up a subscription that’s gone untouched in years, now opening previously paid features to any Xbox console owner. That chiefly includes dropping the Xbox Live Gold requirement on free-to-play multiplayer titles, plus opening multiple social features to all on Xbox.

Xbox consoles have required an Xbox Live Gold membership to access online multiplayer since their inception, but changes introduced this April drop that mandate for free-to-play games. You no longer need to pay the monthly fee on many popular titles, including Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Apex Legends, to name a few. While all paid Xbox games still require Xbox Live Gold, those with zero-cost entry are now entirely free on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

The platform has also lifted the Xbox Live Gold requirement on Party Chat and Looking for Group on Xbox consoles, two popular social features for multiplayer. The former, Microsoft’s staple voice chat system for Xbox, finally goes free and opens communication among all players. The LFG system also provides a platform to search for teammates and like-minded players across the Xbox network, filtering users by game and various social preferences.

How Much Does Xbox Live Gold Cost

You can subscribe to Xbox Live Gold in four different increments of time. One-month subscriptions, three-month subscriptions, six-month subscriptions, or annual subscriptions.

Obviously the cheapest up front will be the one-month subscription. But there is more value in going for the longer offers. As theyre priced to make it less per month than simply subscribing month by month.

Doing month by month gives you more control and the knowledge that you werent wasting any money if you were to ever cancel. But If you are certain you will be utilizing the membership every month for a set period of time, youre much better off subscribing for a longer period of time. Because you save money in the long run.

One-month subscriptions will be $9.99, three-month subscriptions will be $24.99, six-month subscriptions will be $39.99, and annual subscriptions will be $59.99.

Sometimes these will go on sale and you can pick up subscriptions for cheaper than normal. So its a good idea to keep an eye out for sales on the annual membership. As sometimes you can find them on sale for less than the six-month membership.

Microsoft also recently reported that the prices were changing. However it received a lot of backlash from users and media. So it decided not to change the prices from the amounts listed above.

Initial Unveiling And Launch

Prior to the official unveiling, a rumor had circulated that the next Xbox console would be an “always on” system requiring a persistent Internet connection, though Microsoft had not confirmed this. This had drawn some concerns from consumers, which were heightened when employee Adam Orth stated in a message in April 2013 that said, “Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console…Every device now is ‘always on.’ That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit”. Orth’s message drew further ire towards Microsoft, with concerns about and practices against the sale of used games with an “always on” unit. Orth opted to leave Microsoft a few days later due to the backlash. Despite Microsoft’s statements following the situation, denying the rumors, the mood it created lingered over the next several months.

In response to these pre-launch changes and a belief that Microsoft’s initial decisions for the console were in poor judgement, journalists and consumers jokingly gave the Xbox One nicknames such as the “Xbox 180”, in reference to the Xbox 360 and Microsoft’s decision to reverse its controversial decisions, and “Xbone”, suggesting that the company was “” to consumers by making these changes.

Xbox Live Gold Surprises Subscribers With Free Xbox Exclusive

Xbox Live Gold has surprised subscribers with two free games, both of which are Xbox 360 games, and one of which is actually an Xbox exclusive. In addition to January’s free games, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can currently download Splosion Man for free, however, there are some hoops to jump through as the game is free through Xbox Live Gold Brazil. You don’t have to be in Brazil to download the game nor do you need another Xbox Live Gold subscription, but you will need to get an Xbox Live Gold account for the region.

Splosion Man — developed by Twisted Pixel Games and published by Xbox — debuted back in 2009 via Xbox Live Arcade and as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Upon release, it generated a very respectable 84 on Metacritic and to this day is widely held as one of the best Xbox Live Arcade games. Dark Void is another Xbox 360 game, but developed by Airtight Games and published by Capcom. It was released a year after Splosion Man in 2010.
