What Is A Polki Diamond

EternaGold Disco Diamond Cut Band Ring, 14K Gold on QVC

Polki is an Indian word describing a raw, uncut, and unpolished diamond in its natural state. The art of using raw diamonds in jewelry dates back to more than 2,500 years ago as part of the culture and traditions of the Mughal people.

The Rajput, an upper caste of the Indian subcontinent, later picked up and popularized the art of using uncut diamonds, especially in their wedding jewelry. Eventually, the use of polki made its way to Indian royal families. The tradition is still alive and well, with the state of Rajasthan being the biggest marketplace for handcrafted jewelry adorned with raw and uncut diamonds.

Today, making polki jewelry has been updated, and the diamonds resemble modern diamond cuts such as the round brilliant, cushion, and princess cuts.

In the past, polkis were used in their natural, unfaceted form. But, many of those used in modern western jewelry-making are laser-cut to proportional pieces, polished, and faceted lightly. The result is more brilliant and clearer polkis with fewer inclusions than the traditional ones.

The three types of polkis are Syndicate, Zimbabwe, and Khilwas. Syndicate is the highest quality polki. Zimbabwe polki comes in second and refers to diamonds coming from Zimbabwe in Africa. The lowest quality polkis are known as khilwas.

What Are Diamond Cut Grillz

Diamond cut grillz are a style that has been around for a while. They’re typically made by adding small diagonal cuts into the piece in a criss crossing pattern to make up the unique diamond cut pattern on these grillz. While most people get gold front teeth to look like the rappers, we prefer getting the more unique Diamond cut and diamond dust grillz to stand out. This combo we dubbed the pineapple cut grillz. It’s a unique combination that stands out as much as an iced out piece, but at a fraction of the cost.

See The Difference Between A Perfect Cut And An Inferior Cut In Action By Comparing These Gems:

By clicking the images, you can actually view the diamonds from all sides and see how they differ in light reflection. The one on the left is within super ideal cut proportions and exhibits a lot of sparkle. The diamond on the right however, looks much less lively and exhibits considerably less sparkle.

Another important factor in deciding how well the light will reflect back to the viewer is the pavilion angle. If its too shallow or too steep, it will then cause less light return.

Apparently, everybody wants brilliance and fire in a diamond. But if for instance, you have a preference for fire, you can deliberately choose one that maximizes fire. In such a case, you would have to find a so-called fiery ideal cut diamond.

Take a look at these 1 CARAT G-VS2 EXCELLENT CUTs below:

The diamond on the left exhibits much more fire than the diamond on the right. The second gem looks great, but it is maximized for brilliance and not fire. Of course, you will only be able to see the difference if you view them from all sides just as you would in real life.

What the examples above are meant to show you is how much of an impact the diamond cut has that it should be your absolute priority in choosing a diamond. You may compromise on everything else, especially on color and clarity, but you should never compromise on cut!

The Visual Appeal Of Marquise Cut Diamonds

The marquise is a variant of round and pear shaped diamonds and, like the oval, is a perfect complement to long, slender fingers. But, as we mentioned, it can also create this effect thanks to its shape. The long-thin body and pointed ends draws the eye up, so your fingers will look longer and thinner when you’re sporting this stone in your engagement ring. But there are benefits for your ring as well as your hand.

This diamond shape’s elongated body can make its appearance larger than its actual carat weight. So you’ll be able to buy the same carat weight and have your stone look bigger than someone who purchases, say, a round brilliant diamond. For brides-to-be who prioritize the size of their rings, this is a major draw of the unique marquise cut. But size isn’t the only concern if you’re looking to commit to this diamond shape in your engagement ring.

Old European Cut Diamonds: Visual Characteristics

14k Gold Plated 30â? Diamond Cut Cuban

Old European cut diamonds have several unique visual characteristics that set them apart from other antique diamonds. These include:

  • A relatively small table. Old European cut diamonds have a small table the top surface of the diamond. According to the GIA, an old European cut diamonds table needs to be less than or equal to 53% of its total diameter.
  • A large, visible culet. Old European cuts have a very large culet in relation to the total size of the diamond. In larger old European cut diamonds, you can sometimes view the culet from the table of the diamond with the naked eye.
  • A bruted girdle. Old European cut diamonds have a bruted, or frosted, girdle a small, circular rim that connects the diamonds crown and pavilion. This gives the girdle of the diamond an opaque appearance, unlike the faceted girdles of many modern diamonds.
  • A high crown, with long bottom facets. Old European cut diamonds appear much taller than most modern diamonds , with a crown angle of at least 40 degrees and long facets below the girdle that account for at least 60 percent of the diamonds depth.
  • 58 facets. Just like the modern round brilliant cut, old European cut diamonds have 58 facets. However, these facets are typically larger and chunkier than those on a modern round brilliant cut diamond.
  • Imperfect symmetry. Because many old European cut diamonds were cut before the use of modern diamond cutting technology, they may have small imperfections when it comes to shape and symmetry.

Rare Vs Readily Available

Practically speaking, even finding an old European-cut diamond can present some issues. There simply arent very many of them, so few appear on the market at any given time. In addition, the ones that do appear are more likely to have chips, due to their age. The quality of these diamonds can also vary tremendously from one to the next.

In contrast, modern round brilliants are readily available. You can easily find a good quality one, too.

Tips For Buying An Old European Cut Diamond

  • Focus on personal preference, not just the certificate. While we recommend paying close attention to a diamonds GIA certificate for modern cuts, buying an old European cut diamond is much more about personal preference. Focus on diamonds that look attractive to your eye, as a lot of the appeal of an antique diamond is its sense of character rather than optimal cut quality, color or clarity.
  • Pair it with a vintage setting. The best settings for old European cut diamonds tend to be custom made. To match their origins, many buyers of old European cut diamonds opt to mount them in Edwardian, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco era settings.
  • Consider a yellow or rose gold setting. Many antique cut diamonds have fairly low color grades, such as J, K, L or M. This is because these diamonds were often taken from mines that produced warmer-colored diamonds. Its also because many colorless and near-colorless old European cut diamonds have been recut over the years into round brilliants and other modern diamond shapes. As a result of this, they tend to look more attractive in colored metals such as yellow gold than in white gold or platinum. Colored metals are also a more period-appropriate choice for classic and vintage-inspired engagement rings.

Visible Differences Between Cut Grades

Diamonds with lower cut grades usually look worse than diamonds with higher grades.

Here’s how each rating differ:

Exhibits optimal fire and brilliance as virtually all the light that enters is reflected by the diamond to the viewer’s eye.

Very Good

When seen from the top-down view, it can show an asymmetrical pattern of light and dark spots. It can also show dullness.

Good Cuts dont reflect light as much as the higher grades because their fire, brilliance, and scintillation are not up to par.

This cut grade doesnt retain the light entering the diamond, so the perceived fire and brilliance is greatly reduced.

Poor Cuts are dull even when seen without magnification tools. Its completely worthless and is a bad value for money.

Note: Fair and poor cut grades are so disastrous that most shops don’t even sell them!

Another thing you have to bear in mind is that there can be considerable differences between diamonds with the same cut grade. Check out the comparisons below!

Diamond Brilliance: What Makes Sparkle

When diamonds are found in the earth whether as alluvial deposits or within rough, they are certainly not the well-cut shining gems that we see in jewelry. When found in the earth, diamonds actually have an opaque and rough skin on top. When polishing and cutting a diamond, this exterior skin is removed. In addition two important factors are considered. First is the refractive index of the diamond which is responsible for the brilliance of the diamond. And second is the dispersive power of the diamond which allows it’s ability to split white light and reflect back additional colors. The term scintillation brilliance is applied to the number and arrangement of light reflections from the internal facets that shows of sparkle as the wearer of the diamond moves around. A diamond’s fire is determined by the cut’s crown height and angle and the size and number of facets on the diamond. Therefore, the angles, cut and faceting of the diamond are all essential in determining the beauty of the diamond. When considering cut, be sure to also look at the proportions of the diamond and it’s measurements. This can oftentimes help you decide between two diamonds in the same cut range.

Fire described flashes of color resulting from spectral separation or dispersion of white light into primary colors. Fire is the reason you see blues, oranges, reds, purples, etc. in a diamond. The more colors, the better. This is similar to how light produces a visual rainbow after or during rain.

Pros Of The Old European Cut

  • Unique and one-of-a-kind. Because old European cut diamonds are cut, measured and polished by hand, each one is completely unique. This gives old European cut diamonds a special quality that many people appreciate.
  • Impressive inner fire. Although old European cut diamonds arent as brilliant as more modern diamond shapes, they have something that antique diamond enthusiasts refer to as inner fire. Inner fire is the bright and dark, checkerboard-like flashes of light that can occur when an old European cut diamond is viewed from above. Less intense than the fire seen in modern diamonds, its a unique feature that fans of antique diamonds appreciate.
  • Good value for money. Old European cut diamonds and other antique diamonds are often available at a lower price than modern cut diamonds, making them a good value option if youre a fan of how antique diamonds look.
  • Environmentally friendly. Because antique diamonds have already been mined, their impact on the environment is usually lower than that of a new diamond.
  • Perfect for antique engagement rings. As an antique cut, the old European cut is an excellent match for antique engagement rings, which are experiencing something of a resurgence in recent years.

Diamond Carat Weight Measures A Diamonds Apparent Size

To put it simply, diamond carat weight measures how much a diamond weighs.

A metric carat is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 points. This allows very precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place. A jeweler may describe the weight of a diamond below one carat by its points alone. For instance, the jeweler may refer to a diamond that weighs 0.25 carats as a twenty-five pointer. Diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals. A 1.08 carat stone would be described as one point oh eight carats.

All else being equal, diamond price increases with diamond carat weight because larger diamonds are rarer and more desirable. However, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values depending on three other factors of the diamond 4Cs: Color, Clarity, and Cut.

While now you know what carat means, its also important to remember that a diamonds value is determined using all of the 4Cs, and not just carat weight.

This short video explains carat weight and shows how diamonds are weighed in GIAs lab on an extremely precise electronic scale.
