What Is The Rose Gold American Express Card
The Rose Gold Amex is a special color of card that was issued when American Express refreshed the Gold Card in October of 2018. It was discontinued for over a year before recently being made available again.
Amex Gold 4x Points At Us Supermarkets
The Amex Gold Card offers 4x points on the first $25,000 spent every calendar year at U.S. supermarkets, and after that youll earn a single point per dollar. This excludes superstores and warehouse clubs, so dont expect youll be able to earn those bonus points at Sams Club, for example.
This is one of the best credit cards for grocery store purchases.
I Had The Old Amex Gold Charge Card Can I Now Sign Up For The Credit Card
Yes. Whilst existing customers will retain the charge card, new customers will automatically be granted the Amex Gold credit card. If you already have the charge card you can actually cancel that card and sign up to the new credit card and receive the first year free. Worth thinking about if youre paying £140 pa although wed usually recommend most people cancel before paying the annual fee! You wont however receive the new joiners sign-up bonus.

$120 Annual Dining Credit
One of the benefits to the Amex Gold Card that needs to be considered when weighing the $250 annual fee is the $120 annual dining credit. The credits are split up in $10 monthly increments for charges at GrubHub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruths Chris Steakhouse, Boxed & Participating Shake Shack locations.
It is a use it or lose it credit: If you dont use the $10 in a given month, it doesnt roll over.
I value this benefit at face value as both GrubHub and Seamless offer food delivery service where I live. Ordering lunch or dinner once a month from either of these services hasnt been an issue and I used my $10 credit each and every month of my first year with the card.
Total Benefit Value: $120
Redeeming Membership Rewards Points
The Amex Gold Card earns Membership Rewards points. This is one of the four major transferable points currencies and is a favorite points currency for many. While I love Membership Rewards, Id say that not everyone should be earning these points. Let me explain who should and shouldnt earn Membership Rewards points.

Does The Amex Gold Card Get You Access To Airport Lounges
Unfortunately, no. While the American Express Gold Card comes with a variety of travel benefits, you would need The Platinum Card from American Express in order to gain complimentary access to American Express lounge networks. If you’re open to getting a card from a different credit card issuer, then the Chase Sapphire Reserve will offer you a ton of luxury travel benefits that more than compensate for the card’s annual fee.
The Amex Gold is part of the Amex trifecta and pairs well with the Amex Platinum. You can compare the Amex trifecta vs. Chase trifecta rewards side-by-side to see which card combination gets you your preferred travel benefits.
The Amex Gold Card Is Right For You If:
You can take advantage of the high rewards rate and spending credits it offers.
Since the American Express® Gold Card has so many benefits, it can work well for many different types of consumers. If any of the following are true, you should think about applying:
- You’re a foodie. Whether you like going to restaurants or picking up your ingredients at the grocery store, you’ll have the opportunity to earn lots of bonus rewards.
- You like to travel. This card has useful travel perks and flexible points you can transfer to several airlines and hotels.
- You find the variety of credits valuable. The Uber, hotel, and dining credits can add up if you spend in these categories.

Should I Get The Amex Gold
While the Amex Gold Card could be a winner for almost anyone, there are specific consumers it would benefit more. There are also certain cardholders who might be better off with a different credit card altogether.
Here are some points you should consider before signing up for the Amex Gold Card, as well as signs that you should look elsewhere:
Up To $10 Per Month In Uber Cash Credits
The newest benefit offered by the Amex Gold Card is up to $10 per month in Uber Cash credit, again up to a maximum of $120 per year. Once you add your Amex Gold Card as a payment method in your Uber account, it works just like the Uber credits on the Amex Platinum card. These Uber Cash credits can be used toward eligible US Uber rides or Uber Eats purchases
You can redeem Uber Cash toward Uber rides or Uber Eats food delivery in the US, but it won’t roll over to the next if you don’t use up the entire credit each month.

Is The Amex Gold Card Worth It
The Amex Gold Card is a great card for anyone who spends a lot of money on food , and who is looking to earn Membership Rewards points. Furthermore, Id argue that the card has been improved even further, as it now offers up to $240 in annual credits, between dining and Uber Cash.
For a long time, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® was the undisputed champ when it came to dining, but this card is now even more rewarding for dining.
Just to give a bit of context, let me share some good complements to the Amex Gold, as well as other cards to consider.
Is Amex Gold Card Right For You
The American Express Gold Card is great for a frequent flier, restaurant lover, or home chef. The perks and points are valuable if you use them, but if not, the $250 annual fee may be steep with limited benefits.
It might take a little extra thought to maximize the value of your points, and its less straightforward than cash rewards, but its possible to get more value than even top cash back cards if you do it right.
Youll be able to redeem your points in a number of ways, including gift cards, merchandise, and travel or entertainment options via the American Express site. Or you could transfer the points to one of American Expresss travel partners to get optimum travel savings. These frequent flier or hotel rewards programs can double the value of your points.
You can also redeem points for a statement credit, but you may lose some value in the process. You wont be able to redeem for a check or cash as with some other existing rewards cards.

Advantages Of The American Express Gold
The biggest long-term advantage of the American Express Gold is its superior earning rate at U.S. supermarkets and restaurants worldwide. With no foreign transaction fees , this should be your go-to card for dining at restaurants everywhere you go. In fact, those bonus categories are so strong that it may be worth holding this card even if you only ever use it for dining and groceries.
Given that this is very much a food lovers card, it comes as no surprise to see up to $120 in annual statement credits are available for select dining spots as well. You can earn up to $10 in statement credits each month when you pay with the Gold Card at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruths Chris Steak House, Boxed and participating Shake Shack locations.
But thats only the half of it. The Amex Gold also now comes with both a complimentary Uber Eats Pass membership for up to 12 months when you enroll by December 31, 2021, and $10 in Uber Cash each month. Uber Cash can be used either for Uber rides, or on food delivery orders made with Uber Eats.
Add it all together, and youre getting up to $240 in credits every 12 months. Since the Amex Gold has an annual fee of $250, if you can use all the credits, youre effectively paying only $10 for the card each year.
And the Amex Gold also comes with trip delay insurance, meaning if your trip is delayed more than 12 hours due to a covered reason, you can earn up to $300 in unexpected expenses reimbursed.
Is Amex Gold A Good Card To Use When Travelling
Yes, to the extent that you receive double Membership Rewards points when using the card abroad.
However, because Amex adds a 3% foreign exchange fee, you might want to get a separate free credit card to use abroad.
Unfortunately there are no credit cards with 0% foreign exchange fees worldwide which earn airline or hotel points. One option is to get a free card from Currensea. Currensea is a simple but clever idea. You pay abroad with your Currensea Mastercard debit card. Currensea translates the cost to Sterling with just a 0.5% fee and withdraws the money from your bank account. You can find out more about Currensea by clicking here. Currensea is free so there is no risk in giving it a try.

Who Is This Card For
If youre a foodie and eat out frequently, this card is a no-brainer. Thats because it earns 4 points per dollar at restaurants, including takeout and delivery with services like Grubhub or Seamless. If youre a home cook, this card also earns 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year . Thats potentially a lot of bonus Amex Membership Rewards points that you can maximize for travel and other redemptions.
Cardholders also receive up to $120 in annual statement credits toward dining and up to another $120 per year in Uber Cash toward U.S. Uber rides and Uber Eats orders after enrolling their card. Together, those bring the out-of-pocket cost of the cards $250 annual fee closer to a mere $10.
In short, the Amex Gold is great for anyone looking to leverage their everyday spending for excellent rewards while also enjoying useful statement credits for things like dining and ride-hailing services.

How To Maximize Your Rewards
Using your card everywhere you buy is the first step. Be especially attentive to using only this card in the categories for which it offers the richest rewards, such as dining and groceries. Try to concentrate your food shopping at supermarkets over alternative retailers that sell food purchases at superstores and warehouse clubs do not earn rewards, nor does food bought from convenience stores. Try, too, to buy non-food items you need at the supermarket, since all purchases made at supermarkets qualify for the 4-points-per-dollar rewards.
When it comes to using your hard-earned points, consider skipping the generally pricey redemption options offered by Amex in favor of transferring your points to partners. Making the most of partner programs means not only joining them, naturally, but familiarizing yourself with their conditions and staying abreast of any changes to them, including time-limited specials or bonus opportunities.
If you have a flight or hotel stay coming up, check for itineraries with Amex’s partners and compare what it would cost you in points or miles to the cash price. Make a rough calculation of the comparative benefits. If you can get more than a cent per point or mile out of the redemption, it’s more than you’d get from the point rewards youd earn by booking directly through Amex.
