The price of gold seems to move around quite a bit. What are some things that cause changes in the gold price?

Gold is a commodity that can have very rapid price changes during periods of high volatility and can also have very little price movement during quiet periods of low volatility. There are many different things that can potentially affect the price of gold. These issues include but are not limited to: supply and demand, currency fluctuations, inflation risks, geopolitical risks, and asset allocations.

Gold is viewed by some as a safe-haven asset for it is one of the only assets with virtually no counter-party risks . This is why golds value may potentially rise during times of economic instability or geopolitical uncertainty.

Isnt the price of gold too volatile for most investors?

Gold can, just like any other commodity, become volatile with rapid price changes and swings. The gold market can also, however, go through extended periods of quiet trading and price activity. Today many financial experts see gold as being in a long-term uptrend and that may potentially be one reason why investors are buying gold.

Does Gold Fluctuate Too Much To Make It Worth The Time Of An Ordinary Investor

While youll find major players investing in gold constantly, from big banks and governments to investors like George Soros, it is not too volatile for the ordinary investor to use. By knowing the spot price of gold and historic gold prices, you can track the movement of the metal and make smart investing decisions. Many ordinary investors choose to put a percentage of their wealth into gold simply to protect it from paper dollar devaluation.

Gold is a store of value investment. This means that while the gold price might change daily, or even hourly, the value of the gold does not. It protects the money you put into it. This is more important during challenging economic times than it is during the course of normal events.

What Is Quantitative Easing

How Much A Ounce Of Gold Cost Today May 2021

Quantitative easing is a monetary policy tool used by central bankers in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The tool was first used in Japan but became a widely used term punned QE after former Federal Reserve chair Ben Bernanke introduced the concept in the U.S. in response to the fall of major investment bank Lehman Brothers. Bernanke purchased bad debt off other major commercial banks in order to prevent them from defaulting, while simultaneously increasing the money supply. Since then, other central banks have implemented this tool including the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan.

QE has risks including increasing inflation if too much money is created to purchase assets, or can fail if the money provided by central bankers to commercial banks doesnt trickle down to businesses or the average consumer.

These shares are unallocated and work directly with a Gold Fund company who then backs up the Gold shares or stocks, and thus takes care of shipping and storage. With that, the Gold buyer does not have to worry about holding the tangible asset. However, Gold investors who prefer to hold and see their investments do not care for this option.

Gold Price Prediction Chart

Ive compiled gold price predictions from a number of banks and precious metals analysts.

The table below shows the gold price prediction from various consultancies and independent analysts. Not all gave a forecast for both time periods, but Ive listed what theyve stated publicly. Heres what they think is ahead for gold.

You can see that most analysts predict gold will exceed $2,000 per ounce in 2021. Two project it will average in the $1,900-range. And of those I found, all are very bullish long-term .

A couple interesting points to highlight from these analysts

CPM Groups projection is lower than most, but if gold averages $1,922 in 2021, it would represent an 8.2% increase over 2020 and a record annual average. They also state that we expect prices to rise sharply at some point in the future, to new records significantly higher than $2,000. Such an increase would be expected to be caused by investors buying increased volumes of gold in a future economic and political crisis the period 2023 2025 is perhaps the most likely time period to expect such.

Meanwhile, well note that analyst Ross Norman has won first place in the LBMA gold price survey nine times. He predicts gold will rise 20% this year.

Last, the average 2021 gold price forecasts from these analysts is $2,228.

So what is my 2021 gold price prediction? To answer that question we have to look at the various factors that are likely to have the biggest impact on the price, both positive and negative.

Gold has a lot going for it this year and its not only ...

The US dollar is the standard for international trade, and gold is always traded in US dollars. Even if youre buying in another nation, the dealer will likely have paid for the gold in a close equivalent amount of US dollars, and then simply translated the price to the currency of the nation in question. For instance, a dealer might offer an ounce of gold in British pound sterling, and you might pay for that gold in British pounds; however, the dealer often originally paid for many of their gold bullion product inventory in US dollars. All gold transactions hinge on the value of the US dollar, no matter where the sale is taking place around the world.

The Gold Futures Market

Gold futures are exchange-traded, standardized contracts in which the buyer takes delivery of a specified quantity of gold from the seller against a predetermined price in the future. Market makers and gold producers hedge their investments against the volatilities in the market by using gold futures, and as an easy way to make quick returns based off of movements made in the market.

A gold futures contract is a legal agreement for delivery of the precious metal at an agreed price in the future. These contracts are used by hedgers to minimize their price risk on the sale of physical gold or an expected purchase. Hedgers also provide opportunities to speculators to take part in the market.

Two positions can be taken: A short position is for making delivery obligations, while a long position is for accepting delivery of physical gold. Most gold futures contracts are agreed prior to fulfillment of the delivery date. For instance, this happens when investors switch position from long to short before the delivery notice.

Worldwide Jewelry And Industrial Demand

In 2019, jewelry accounted for approximately half of the gold demand, which totaled more than 4,400 tonnes, according to the World Gold Council. India, China, and the United States are large consumers of gold for jewelry in terms of volume. Another 7.5% of demand is attributed to technology and industrial uses for gold, where it is used in the manufacturing of medical devices like stents and precision electronics like GPS units.

Therefore, gold prices can be affected by the basic theory of supply and demand; as demand for consumer goods such as jewelry and electronics increases, the cost of gold can rise.

The gold-to-silver ratio shows you how many ounces of silver it would take to buy an ounce of gold. If the ratio is at 60 to 1, this means it would take 60 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold.

Investors use the ratio to determine whether one of the metals is under or overvalued and thus if it is a good time to buy or sell a particular metal.

When the ratio is high, it is widely thought that silver is the favored metal. When the ratio is low, the opposite is true and usually signals it is a good time to buy gold.

On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said nonfarm payrolls increased by 943,000 in July, above the 845,000 new jobs forecast by Dow Jones.

While gold has since recovered some losses, Dhar said it was “difficult to remain bullish on the precious metal,” given the hawkish outlook for U.S. monetary policy.

The Federal Reserve is expected to dial back monetary easing and slow its stimulus efforts as the economy recovers from the pandemic. The U.S. central bank has held rates near zero, but officials have signaled that hikes could happen soon, especially with inflation running hot.;

But Dominic Schnider, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, predicts that real yields will “go less negative” and that means more downside for gold. He told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia” on Wednesday he expects outflows from the gold exchange-traded funds and futures markets.;

When real yields go up, gold prices go down, and vice versa. In such a scenario, the opportunity cost of holding gold, a non-yielding asset, is higher as investors are foregoing interest that would be otherwise earned in yielding assets.

“A stronger US dollar combined with a gradual increase in US 10 real yields suggest that gold prices should trend lower,” Dhar wrote.
