Collecting Kennedy Half Dollars

RARE PRESIDENTIAL DOLLAR COINS WORTH MONEY – GOLD DOLLARS WORTH MONEY!!

The Kennedy half dollar series doesn’t only appeal to collectors of modern coins. It also attracts those who admire John F. Kennedy and the nostalgic Camelot period marked by JFKs tenure in the White House from 1961 through 1963.

While the series lacks any major key dates or pricey rarities, it is nevertheless a big draw for collectors of high-end coins. Many of the business-strike issues are conditional rarities in grades above MS-66 and especially beyond MS-67.

A complete, basic date-and-mintmark set of business strikes and proofs can be built for less than $2,000. Add varieties and other unusual offerings, including the 2014-W gold half dollar, and the price can quickly approach $7,500 or more.

Those who wish to build a set in the highest-known grades can quickly run their costs into the high five figures. In other words, the skys the limit with how challenging one can make the Kennedy half dollar series.

Given the extraordinary popularity and versatility of the Kennedy half dollar series, there are plenty of options for collectors who wish to pursue this set. Completing a collection of Kennedy half dollars offers exciting avenues for everyone. It’s also within the financial reach of most collectors. Yet the myriad opportunities for advanced collectors to customize their sets and include premium-quality examples and unusual varieties offer challenges to even the most advanced numismatists.

The Rise Of The Gold Standard

The gold standard is a monetary system in which paper money is freely convertible into a fixed amount of gold. In other words, in such a monetary system, gold backs the value of money. Between 1696 and 1812, the development and formalization of the gold standard began as the introduction of paper money posed some problems.

The U.S. Constitution in 1789 gave Congress the sole right to coin money and the power to regulate its value. Creating a united national currency enabled the standardization of a monetary system that had up until then consisted of circulating foreign coin, mostly silver.

With silver in greater abundance relative to gold, a bimetallic standard was adopted in 1792. While the officially adopted silver-to-gold parity ratio of 15:1 accurately reflected the market ratio at the time, after 1793 the value of silver steadily declined, pushing gold out of circulation, according to Gresham’s law.

The issue would not be remedied until the Coinage Act of 1834, and not without strong political animosity. Hard money enthusiasts advocated for a ratio that would return gold coins to circulation, not necessarily to push out silver, but to push out small-denomination paper notes issued by the then-hated Bank of the United States. A ratio of 16:1 that blatantly overvalued gold was established and reversed the situation, putting the U.S. on a de facto gold standard.

Value Of Sacagawea Dollars

Sacagawea gold dollar coins were minted first from 2000 until 2008 and again with different reverse designs starting in 2009. These are popular coins but well over a billion have been minted since 2000. There are a couple of special varieties that are collectible like the 2000-P Cheerios coin. However, your regular strike Sacagawea coins are still just worth $1 and will likely only be worth a dollar for the foreseeable future. A moderate exception would be that some of the older rolls do sell for a very small premium over their face value. All Sacagawea coins, while gold in color, have absolutely no precious metals value. They are made of copper, manganese, brass, zinc, and nickel. Despite their limited collector value, Sacagaweas are still a fun coin with a lot of history.

Our guide at the bottom of this page lists the mintage figures and historical information about all the various Sacagawea coins from different years. Here are some quick facts that collectors might find of interest:

Educate Yourself Watch Out For Fakes

Coins are both a hobby and investment, says Warren Zivi, head numismatist and president at American Rarities, a coin dealer based in Boulder, Colorado. You have to make good choices in what you pick.

For those getting into the field, its important to understand what your goal is to have a good time with your collection as a hobbyist or try to make some money as an investor.

Either way, says Zivi, you want to know what youre doing. His motto for new entrants to the field is Buy the book before you buy the coin. The book hes referring to is A Guide Book of United States Coins, known among experts as the Red Book. He also recommends a subscription to Coin World, which includes current information on the state of the industry.

Zivi says that theres a lot of misinformation on the internet now about coins, with scammers taking a common coin and trying to sell it as a valuable coin on an auction site.

There are tons and tons of fakes, he says, so its important to get access to expert knowledge, especially as youre starting out, so that you know what youre buying is indeed authentic. Still it can be difficult to spot a fake, even for the pros.

Recently I had two individuals send us coins that were graded by a nationally recognized grader, and they turned out to be fake, says Zivi.

Its easier than ever before to get an opinion on authenticity and valuation, says Zivi. Buyers or sellers can send in pictures or even whole collections.

Nine-year-old Zack Everhart of Frederick is all smiles as he displays the new gold-plated Pokemon trading card he got at the Burger King in Westpointe Plaza Monday night. The series of cards went on sale Monday at Burger King.

When the children howl for the new gold-plated Pokemon trading cards on sale at Burger King, their parents will shell out $2 more in Frederick County than at the chains other restaurants in the region.

In fact, the countys Burger King franchises charge $1 more for the card than the Burger King in Manhattan.

The national television ad campaign priced the cards at $1.99 with a value meal.

When she complained, the cashier told her, Thats the price. You either want them or your dont, said Ms. Rebert.

The Thurmont woman felt like the victim of a bait-and-switch scheme.

They had me over a barrel, said the mother of four. My kids knew Burger King had the cards.

The president of the countys Burger King franchises, Gary Giangrande, said the franchise agreement allows him to set his own prices, regardless of what Burger King Corp. may advertise nationally.

The price of the trading card varies throughout the country, he said, adding that the high cost of doing business in Frederick County necessitated a wider profit margin.

He suggested contacting Burger King restaurants in the region to demonstrate the price range. He also guessed a gold-plated Pokemon trading card would cost as much as $5.99 in New York City.

The 1922 Peace Dollar Production

Almost 45% of Peace Silver Dollars ever minted were produced in 1922. Among 109,577,279 coins made during fifteen years, from 1921 to 1935, as many as 84,275,000 were minted that year.

In the 60s, most of them were melted. However, their number is still huge. According to professional estimation, over 15 million of them still exist, including approximately:

  • 10 million 1922 with no mintmark of 51,737,000 minted in Philadelphia
  • 3 million 1922-D of 15,063,000 minted in Denver
  • 2 million 1922-S of 17,475,000 minted in San Francisco

The question is why the US Mint made so many Peace Dollars in 1922. The reason was a World War I silver law. The government got permission to melt 270 million silver dollars in 1918 through Pittman Act, but the requested condition was to replace these dollars after the war.

Minting started in 1921 with 86 million Morgan dollars, and the silver dollars production continued with over 84 million 1922 Peace dollars in 1922 and 56 million in 1923.

How Many Cheerio Dollars Are There

Some years ago, some experts from a third-party grading service opened a sealed box of Cheerios that contained the Sacajawea dollar. However, the dollar contained within the package was a regular Sacajawea dollar without the enhanced tail feathers. The cereal box appeared to be authentic, and There was no evidence that anybody tampered with the card carrying the Sacajawea dollar. Therefore, it is impossible to know exactly how many boxes of Cheerios contained a Sacajawea Dollar with the enhanced tail feathers.

According to an official statement from the United States Mint that was released on June 17, 2007 by spokeswoman Joyce Harris: 5,500 Golden Dollars of a high detail feather variety were manufactured and shipped to General Mills as part of the Golden Dollar promotion in October 1999, under a detailed arrangement that they not be released until January 2000. Prior to manufacturing the coins for release to the Federal Reserve in 2000, the feather detail was softened and the center tail feather was recessed to solve a die manufacturing issue. Recessing the center tail feather gives the illusion of a 13th feather, but that was not the intent.

Peace Silver Dollar Value

The US Mint began devising the new Peace design for silver dollars to commemorate peace after WWI. The chosen designer Anthony de Francisci used the high relief method initially, but such design caused many dies to break under the increased stress.

Therefore, the US Mint changed this idea, and coins produced from 13th February 1922 to 1935 are made in low relief.

As a result of massive production, these coins dont worth much. Their price is usually from $18 to $50, except for a few unique pieces. For example, it is known that mints produced only 35,401 high relief Peace Dollars in 1922. All of them were melted except one, which value is estimated to $137,776.

Additionally, only 11 of a couple of dozen high-relief matte proof 1922 Peace Dollars made in January and February that year survived. There are indications that a few more were discovered recently, but it is still not confirmed.

The estimated price of each piece is probably over $100,000. Believe it or not, one of them was recently sold at auction for $329,000.

Another hugely valuable coin in the Nationwide arsenal is the Pre-1933 $20 Liberty Double Eagle. The batch minted at the New Orleans Mint in 1856 is particularly valuable due to the manner of pressing, creating especially eye-catching details. This pattern was originally struck in 1849 and used in commerce from 1850-1907 until it was replaced by the Saint-Gaudens double eagle in 1907. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt pulled gold coins from public circulation in 1933, millions of Double Eagles were melted, making the remaining existing coins some of the most valuable to add to your collection or portfolio.

Numismatists believe this version of the 1964 proof Kennedy half dollar is the first to have been struck. President Kennedys wife, Jacqueline, felt the hair detail was too strong on this variety. She requested a softening of the hairlines, which is how most 1964 Kennedy half dollars were produced.

On the Heavily Accented Hair variety, the hair stands over Kennedys right ear are particularly pronounced. Moreover, the lower left serif of the letter I in LIBERTY is virtually missing.

There is no known mintage for the 1964 Heavily Accented Hair half dollar. However, its estimated that less than 5% of the entire proof mintage is of this early variety. Of a total mintage of 3,950,762 pieces, 5% is approximately 197,500 pieces.
