Weigh your item and note its weight in grams. Next, place your container on a flat surface and half-fill it with water. Record how full the container is in milliliters. Carefully lower your item into the container so the water doesnt splash over the sides. Write down the new water level. Then subtract the first measurement from the second to find out how many milliliters of water your item displaced. This gives you the items volume.
To find the density of your gold item, divide its volume by its weight. For example, if your item weighs 40 grams and has a volume of 2.2 milliliters, its density will be 40 / 2.2, which is 18.18 g/mL. Since the density of gold is 19.3 g/mL, the chances are your item is mostly real gold. Of course, other metals have a weight similar to gold, so this test is a good guide but not completely foolproof.

Heat The Stone And See If It Shatters
Diamonds are made of incredibly strong material and will be unresponsive to high heat.
To test this, grab a drinking glass and fill it with cold water. Use a set of plyers or fireproof gloves to hold the stone. Heat the stone with a lighter for approximately 40 seconds, then drop the stone directly into the cold water.
If the stone shatters, it is made of weaker components and is not a real diamond. A true diamond will show no reaction.
This method tests the quality and strength of the stone. Because of the quick expansion and contraction of heat, weak materials like glass or cubic zirconium will crack and break. Think of a glass or Pyrex dish you use for cooking. If you pull the dish out of a hot oven and try to wash it immediately, the shock in temperature change may shatter the dish.

Real gold has a particular density. The density of a gold item will vary according to the purity of the gold.
14-karat yellow gold has a density of between 12.9 and 13.6 grams per milliliter. For 18-karat yellow gold, the density is between 15.2 and 15.9 grams per milliliter.
The density of white gold varies more widely, because of the range of different metals the gold is mixed with. A piece of 18-karat white gold can have a density of anything between 14.7 and 16.9 grams per milliliter. All 22-karat gold has a density of between 17.7 and 17.8 grams per milliliter.
Checking the density of your item can therefore enable you to see whether it matches the density of gold. And as long as you have a measuring cylinder and an accurate enough weighing scale, its easy to do.
Your cylinder needs to have markings in either milliliters or cubic centimeters. The more gradations there are on the scale, the more accurate your result will be. Your weighing scale needs to be able to show you the weight in grams.
First weigh your item and record the measurement in grams. Now half-fill your graduated cylinder with water. You want to leave enough space for the water to rise without overspilling when you place the item inside.
