How Did The Discovery Of Gold Shape California
On January 24, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold while overseeing the construction of a sawmill on the American River. Up until this time, experts assumed that gold was likely to be found, but there were many false claims. This discovery didnt make headlines until later that year when President James K. Polk confirmed Marshalls discovery. This announcement sparked what became known as the California Gold Rush.
The California Gold Rush quickly became one of the largest migrations of people across the United States. In 1849 alone, over 100,000 people began arriving in California from all over the world. By the end of the Gold Rush, that number had reached nearly 300,000 people to make the journey.
Finding gold was more difficult than many of the eager prospectors imagined. As a result, very few actually became rich. It is estimated that prospectors removed nearly 12 million ounces of gold from the ground during the first five years of the 1849 Gold Rush. This amount equates to about $16 billion today.
Instead, other services and ventures became very lucrative. The arriving gold miners needed supplies such as shovels, mining equipment, and work clothing. Towns began to pop up across the state as settlers built boarding houses, schools, general stores, and saloons.

Known Placer Gold Areas Of Southern California
Randsburg The Rand district is Southern Californias largest historical gold producer. Today the area is popular with prospectors and prospecting clubs own claims that can be used by members.
Holcomb Valley and Baldwin LakeHolcomb Valley and Baldwin Lake districts are on the north side of the San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear.
Acton The Acton district is just south of Lancaster. Townships 27 0040N 0130W and 27 0040N 0120W are the center of gold activity today.
Frazier Mountain The Frazier Mountain district is in the northeast comer of Ventura County in the general vicinity of Frazier Mountain. With over 50 historical gold mines, this is one of Southern Californias more significant gold districts.

California Gold Country is a region of the State where gold was discovered in the mid-1800’s. That gold discovery was largely responsible for California’s rapid growth and influx of immigrants from around the world. It should be called the International State because of the variety of people and languages you’ll find in California, thanks to the Gold Rush.
Much of the public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management Mother Lode Field Office is open for the filing of mining claims under the Mining Law of 1872. Under the Mining Law, the claim holder has exclusive rights to valuable minerals which may be found on the claim. Currently there are roughly 5,000 mining claims on the public lands administered by the Mother Lode Field Office. Persons who wish to stake a mining claim should contact the BLM State Office in Sacramento to find out if a site is already claimed or not. The BLM must be notified prior to the use of mechanized equipment on a claim. Mining claims may not be filed for the purpose of living on public land.
Directions:Travel northeast on State Highway 32 from Chico, 20 miles to Forest Ranch, then southeast on Doe Mill Road , three and one-half miles to Butte Creek trailhead.
Butt Valley And Quincy Districts
The Butt Valley district is located on the North Fork of the Feather River in Plumas County. The district location is described as an extensive area that lies between Lake Almanor on the north and the Virgilia-Twain area on the south and southwest.
The Feather River and its tributaries were mined for vast amounts of placer gold during the Gold Rush years starting in the 1850s.
The center of the Butt Valley district is the once prosperous gold mining town of Seneca in township 21 0260N 0080E . Seneca is now a ghost town but this area remains an active placer mining center.
The Quincy district is centered on the town of Quincy, county seat of Plumas County. Township 21 0240N 0090E ranks 27th with 48 placer claims.
