Theres no annual fee, but you can only get the card if you are an Amazon Prime member. Youll also earn a $150 Amazon gift card upon approval, which offsets the price of your $119 in your first year.
The card earns 5% cash back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods, plus 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores, and 1% cash back on everything else.
Are Metal Credit Cards Better
No, not necessarily. They are more durable than plastic cards, but they aren’t necessarily better than traditional cards when it comes to benefits and perks. Whether they’re “better” depends on what you’re looking for.
Metal credit cards are often marketed to those who travel extensively and have significant disposable income. They can have annual fees in the hundreds of dollars although they often also come with fantastic perks such as free airport lounge access, elite status in loyalty programs and travel statement credits. If you stay close to home, though, you may be better off with a plastic cash-back card.
Bottom line: don’t choose a credit card simply because it’s metal. If it otherwise fits your needs, consider the metal factor an added benefit.

Bottom Line On Metal Credit Cards In Canada
Most metal cards offered in Canada are still generally exclusive to high-income earners, big spenders and investors. Most of these cards offer big rewards on travel and dining, concierge services, airport lounge access and incredibly comprehensive insurance packages, however, there are plenty of other credit cards in Canada that offer similar features with much lower annual fees not to mention the eligibility criteria for these cards are actually attainable for the average person.
If youre scratching your head in disbelief at the eligibility criteria for most of the above metal credit cards, youre not looking to pay a high annual fee for a charge card from Amex, or you missed out on the Koho metal card, you might want to consider other rewards credit cards.
A metal credit card represents prestige for good reason. On average, the heaviest credit cards weigh around 15 grams, come with a high annual fee and offer premium perks. Getting one of the heaviest credit cards could be worth considering if youre looking for a premium travel option. Just make sure paying the annual fee is worth it. Otherwise, itll just weigh down your wallet.
If you think a heavy credit card or metal credit card may not be a good choice for you, but you still want premium perks, compare the luxury credit cards until you find the right fit for your wallet.
Can I Swap The Amex Gold Card For The Rose Gold Amex
If you havent applied for the Amex Gold Card, you can request a rose gold version from the start. However, if youre already a cardholder with a traditional gold version of the card, you do have some options.
Since American Express has made the rose gold version permanent, all you have to do to change your card color is request a different version over the phone or via American Express online chat. Just tell the customer service representative that you want a rose gold version of the Amex Gold Card you already have, and Amex will send you an updated version of your card in the mail.
Tip: Its important to note that when you switch from a gold Amex Gold Card to a rose gold one, it is logged as a product change. That means while you keep all your points and the same account, your card number will change. In addition, you should make sure you are still receiving any introductory offers you qualified for on your original card. One of our editors, Emily Sherman, didnt automatically receive her welcome bonus, because she switched from gold to rose gold in the middle of her qualifying spend period. Her points were eventually restored, but it took several phone calls and Amex-led investigations to get to the root of the problem. If you do switch, keep a close eye on your intro offers, benefits and promotions to make sure everything carries over.

Hotel Credit At Eligible Properties: Up To $100 Per Stay
Another perk that I’ve used in the past is the hotel credit at eligible properties. When you stay at a property that’s part of The Hotel Collection, you can receive a $100 hotel credit to spend on qualifying dining, spa and resort activities.
To qualify, guests must book a stay of at least two consecutive nights through American Express Travel at over 600 Hotel Collection properties. Cardholders may also receive a complimentary room upgrade, early check-in and late check-out, when available. This perk can be used on multiple trips, providing you with the ability to maximize savings.
When I visited Arizona in 2019, I chose to use my $100 hotel credit on food at the resort’s restaurant. During my entire stay, I was able to get all of my meals for free!

How To Get A Metal Credit Card
If you desire a metal credit card, you should treat the process of choosing one the same way you would any other financial product.
- Look at the spending categories. First, browse metal cards to see what’s available and get a quick sense of which ones might match your spending style.
- Make sure you can qualify. Then, consider your own credit status, such as your current credit score and income, to determine if you have a chance to qualify for your card of interest. In many cases, metal credit cards tend to require strong credit since they often have an annual fee or require a higher level of spending to access the benefits.
- Read the terms and conditions. Once you deem a particular card a good fit for you, give a closer look at the terms, benefits and fees to make sure you’re ready to apply. Then, simply head to the issuer’s application page and fill out the form to get started. You may also choose to apply from an application that is mailed to you, or by calling the issuer.

Amex Gold Card Benefits
The Amex Gold card comes with a variety of perks that make using the card worthwhile. While benefits like trip delay and baggage insurance are helpful, I’ve never used them and prefer to focus on perks that have a clear value. Here’s a breakdown of all the major benefits with their estimated values.
The Platinum Card From American Express
The card comes with notable perks such as $200 annually in Uber Cash, up to a $100 credit on a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee, a $100 Saks Fifth Avenue credit, and access to global lounges such as the Amex Centurion Lounge and Delta SkyClubs . Amex has introduced new perks with the fee hike. Those include a $200 hotel credit as an annual statement credit for prepaid bookings through the Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection properties made through American Express Travel, $179 annual statement credit for a Clear membership, $240 in annual statement credits on purchases or subscriptions with Audible, The New York Times, SiriusXM and Peacock, and $300 in annual statement credits on select Equinox memberships or a digital subscriptions to Equinox+, an on-demand fitness app.

The card’s earn rates remain the same:
- 2x the points on eligible travel purchases

And as the card earns Membership Rewards points and there haven’t been any changes to the program since May the redemption side of things remains the same.
Milestalks Review Of The American Express Gold Card
The American Express Gold card is one of the best and it unseated my Chase Sapphire Reserve for the #1 spot when I got it. I have it in my own wallet and use it for all of my supermarket spend. Most of us spend a ton at grocery stores and 4X on up to $25,000 a year means that I can even pick up some store brand gift cards from time to time and add that to my grocery order, gaining 4X points on those as well.
For dining, at 4X Membership Rewards, this credit card is second only to the $495 annual fee Citi Prestige card, though of course that card wont help you if your goal is earning Membership Rewards.
The annual fee is basically covered by the statement credits. With the Uber Cash credits and the GrubHub/Seamless credits you are getting $240 in dining credits total, making the net annual fee just $10.
For that, you earn 4X on all restaurants and US supermarkets + 3X on airfare. Not bad at all!
With this card, youll have all of your airline tickets covered and youll have your food covered with 4X Membership Rewards points for charges on groceries and eating out / dining in but you wont have other every day spending covered. Consider a card like the Citi Double Cash which earns 2% cash back convertible to Citi ThankYou points to use on non dining/supermarket/airfare spend, or use the at Your Best Credit Cards to find other cards that match your spending habits.

$200 Credit On Every Onefinestay House Rental
This is potentially very interesting. You will get $200 cashback each time you spend $200 or local currency equivalent on The Platinum Card on a onefinestay house or apartment rental.
I thought this would come with a catch, but it doesnt. I have spoken to Amex and you will get the cashback on each and every booking. The nearest thing to a gotcha is that you must opt-in to this benefit via the American Express website when it goes live on 11th June. If you forget to opt in, you wont receive your cashback.
The only snag is with onefinestay itself. Most of their houses require a three night minimum stays not all of them, but most. Looking at a low cost country such as Thailand, the cheapest place I could find is $185 per night in Koh Samui with a three night minimum. The cheapest with a two night minimum is $450 per night although you are, of course, getting a monumentally large Koh Samui villa for this! If you think that you will be able to book yourself a cheap $200 property and essentially pay nothing due to the $200 cashback, you will be disappointed.
