Buying 14k Gold: When Is It A Good Choice

How Much is 14 Karat Gold Worth?

14K gold is quite affordable compared with 18K or 22K pieces, and this is what makes it so popular among buyers. It is also relatively more durable than the purer and more expensive pieces.

If money is no object and you are not going to wear your gold jewelry every day, you can safely buy a piece that has a higher karat. An 18K, 20K, or 22K item is also very unlikely to cause a nickel allergy.

If you are looking for something more affordable and are concerned about durability, however, consider 14-karat items.

Pick 14K jewelry if you are going to wear the piece often, especially if it is a ring or bracelet, i.e., an item that has higher potential to be damaged when worn.

Also, if you are allergic to nickel and the jewelry you are buying is not nickel-free, do not go below 14 karats .

The Real Situation In The Pawn Shops

First of all, you shouldnt expect to walk in the pawn shop and get the amount of money you previously researched or determined to claim. It is more complicated than that.

Also, keep in mind that the pawn shops wont offer the same gold price when selling and buying jewelry. It is always significantly different, and you will need to fish out for the best price. To be sure you are not tricked for the real gold ring price, you can always ask to see their license to sell and buy gold.

Be aware that the pawn shop owner needs to make money out of your gold, and you will never get 100% what you have expected.

The fair price you can get is 55 to 75% of the particular rings estimated value. Keep in mind that the given prices are always for a simple ring without a gemstone.

When you want to make the final price for more complex rings, you will need to calculate all parts separately. It is quite a challenging job if you are not a professional. However, you can always ask around or check the details.

After comparing the price of 14K gold per gram that the pawn shop offers with its value on the market, you will notice a big difference. Even though one gram of 14K gold is $36 on the market, the pawn shop will provide you with only 13$ per gram for the ring with the same number of karats.

What Is A Karat

14k Gold Hugs/Kisses BRACELET 5mm wide, 7.25 in.L SALE ...

A karat is a measurement of the fineness of a piece of gold. The fineness of a piece represents theweight of fine metal that it contains in proportion to the total weight, including alloyed metals andany impurities. Diamonds and other gemstones are measured in carats per 200mg, meaning forevery 200mg of diamond, the higher the carat.

Gold uses karats. With gold, a karat is a fractional measure of purity for gold alloys, measured per 24parts whole. Pure gold that has not been mixed with any other metals is therefore the highestpossible karat, 24 karat gold.

Whilst more valuable, pure gold is rarely used for jewelry pieces because of its softness andmalleability, and tendency to scratch and mark. Therefore, it is usually alloyed with base metals foruse in jewelry, altering its malleability, color and other properties.

Which Gold Is Most Suitable For Engagement Rings

Shopping for an engagement ring? Theres more to picking the perfect ring than just choosing the right diamond and setting. The type of gold used in an engagement ring can have a huge impact on its appearance, feel and durability. We recently helped two readers find rose gold engagement rings. One reader went with this bold 14K setting while the other went with this, subtler, 18K setting.

Most importantly, making the right choice can help you get the best bang for your buck overall. Take this ring for example. Depending on which metal you choose, the price difference is $400. The most common gold purity levels are 10K , 14K, 18K and 24K. Each level of gold purity offers its own range of advantages and disadvantages, from hardness and durability to the risk of certain levels of gold purity contributing to skin irritation.

What Do The Stamps Mean

Whilst it is possible come across some pieces of gold that are not stamped with purity, most gold, especially jewelry, will come stamped with what is known as a “hallmark” as a reference. Mostauthentic gold jewelry is stamped with some form of number or letter to indicate its karat and goldcontent. There are some common ones which can be helpful to understand when looking at goldthat make up the vast majority of the gold stamps.

Authentic gold jewelry should have a stamp to indicate the purity of the gold in the piece. This markcan be in several different formats. For example: 585, 14kt and 14K all mean 14 karat gold. All ofthese formats are easy to understand, except possibly the 3 digit number format.

There are also three digit numbers tell how pure the gold is as seen in the table above. They aremeasured in the thousandth, so if you want to know the purity percentage, just move the decimalpoint in one space. For example: 750 is 75.0% pure gold .

Other stamps that can be included on gold pieces can indicate whether a piece has been plated withanother metal or not, e.g. GE, which stands for Gold Electroplate. This means that the base of apiece is made of one metal, usually brass, and a certain thickness of gold has been deposited on thebase, giving it a gold plating.

What Is A Hallmark

If youve shopped for jewelry in Europe, or even imported pieces over in the U.S., chances are you’ve come across a few strange images on the jewelry which may or may not be accompanied with an actual purity number stamp. These are called hallmarks and do not need tobe accompanied by a specific purity stamp. If you know the hallmark, you will know just which purity is being guaranteed.

The symbols you will come across will vary by country and time period. Not only are hallmarks great for identifying the gold or precious metal used in the piece, they also help date the jewelry.

Here are clues to look for:

  • An octagon shape in the hallmark shows gold.
  • If the hallmark includes a three-digit number, this is most likely the purity of gold. For example, if the number 585 is stamped inside the octagon, this shows that you have a piece of gold that is 14K, or .585 in purity.
  • Other symbols stamped into the gold show which company submitted the piece for hallmarking, and which assay office tested and stamped the hallmark of approval. Hallmarks give you peace of mind that the gold you bought is genuine and has been tested and certified.

What Is 22k/ 18k/ 14k In Gold

Now, how pure is this 22K gold? Lets do a simple mathematical calculation:

24K gold = 100% Pure Gold

Thus, 1K Gold = = 4.167% Pure Gold

Thus, 22K Gold = = 91.67% Pure Gold

Lets talk about 22k Gold Purity and other factors. Out of the 100%, only 91.67% is pure gold in 22K gold. So, what does the other 8.33% consist of? These consist of metals like Silver, Zinc, Nickel and other alloys just as we explained earlier. The addition of these metals make the overall mixture a little harder and thus helps in making the jewellery more durable. This 22K gold is still not hard enough. Though it can be used for plain gold jewellery, it is not strong enough to hold diamonds & gemstones in studded jewellery . And thus, generally studded jewellery is manufactured in 18K or lower, like 14K, 10K, 9K, etc. Based on the calculations already explained above,

18K Gold = = 75% Pure Gold

14K Gold = = 58.33% Pure Gold

10K Gold = = 41.67% Pure Gold

Are we making sense yet? We certainly hope we are. Carrying on, there are two things to be understood here First, the hardness of the metal keeps increasing as the percentage of gold in the metal compositions goes down. Second and one of the other important aspects which we havent yet discussed, the colour of this metal composition starts getting duller. It must also be understood that purity can sometimes be mentioned as a combination of 3 numerals. For example

24K = 99.9% Pure = 999

14K = 58.3% Pure = 585& so on
