The California Franchise Tax Board is responsible for the distribution of the stimulus payment. It issued the first batch of payments a couple of weeks back. Most recipients are expected to get payment through direct deposit by October 15.

The CFTB has updated its website to help taxpayers track their coronavirus stimulus check. Those who filed their tax return after the August 20 deadline can expect a delay in their stimulus payment. This is because it would take up to 45 more days to process their tax return.

  • You were never married and never entered into a registered domestic partnership.
  • You received a final decree of divorce, dissolution of registered domestic partnership, or you filed a Notice of Termination of Domestic Partnership with the California Secretary of State and the six-month waiting period for the notice to become final passed. A petition for divorce or dissolution of registered domestic partnership is not the same as a final decree. Until the final decree is issued, a taxpayer who is married or an RDP remains married or an RDP.
  • You received a final decree of legal separation from your spouse/RDP. A petition for legal separation, an informal separation agreement, or just living apart from your spouse/RDP is not the same as being legally separated under a final decree.

How Does Eligibility Differ For The Golden State Stimulus Check From The Payments Made By The Federal Government

There are two main differences in the eligibility requirements between the two types of direct payments.

The first is based on income. The checks sent by the State of California are going to workers making $30,000 or less, while at the federal level the cap for individuals was set at $75,000.

The second difference relates to the types of identification needed to qualify. To receive a stimulus check from the federal government, one must have a Social Security number. This left immigrant residents in California without federal aid.

Rather than requiring a Social Security number, California requires a recipient to have an individual tax identification number , which workers use when filing their taxes. The decision was made to use the ITIN numbers to support immigrant and mixed-status families to receive benefits that they were unable to claim from the federal government. Some advocacy organizations have stated that they appreciate that these changes were made but highlight that much more could be done by state lawmakers to fill the gaps faced by these workers and their families.

Adults earning between $30,000 and $75,000 will get $600 if they do not have children and $1,100 if they do.

Again, people without kids who received a check from the first Golden State Stimulus program will not receive another check.
