There are two types of gilding: water gilding and gilding using leaf size or adhesive. I have never tried water gilding, its a more complicated process to do. I use a gold size for applying leaf, Pebeo gilding paste or Japanese gold size.

If gilding on top of dry oil paint I use Japanese gold size adhesive because it is oil based. For most other gilding purposes, I use Pebeo gilding paste which is water-based and suitable to apply on top of acrylic paints.

Since ancient times, people have been hammering gold into very thin sheets that can be applied to other surfaces. Its been possible to do that because of golds extreme softness and malleability. In the ancient world, pure 24-karat gold was sometimes beaten into leaf. Over time as more sophisticated manufacturing processes have been developed to produce gold leaf, it has become possible to use lower-karat gold, and even alloys of gold combined with other metals that have included silver. And then we come to modern times, when colorings have been introduced to create gold leaf sheets that contain very little real gold at all.

If you come into possession of a quantity of unused sheets of gold leaf, what are they worth? It depends on two factors . . .

    • The nature of the metal itself its karat classification. To determine how much karat gold it really contains, send it to a qualified gold refinery like Specialty Metals Smelters and Refiners.
    • The weight of the gold leaf. Because only a few ounces of gold can be beaten into enough gold leaf to cover many square feet of other surfaces, even a packet of several hundred small sheets of gold leaf can weight very little.

Gold leaf, sometimes called gold foil, is gold that has been beaten into a very thin sheet that averages about 0.12 microns in thickness. For comparison, copier paper is around 130 microns, and human hair around 60 microns. One ounce of 24k gold would make a coin of about 33mm in diameter , and could be flattened in to gold leaf that would cover the ceiling of 10 x 15 foot room.

Gold leaf is so thin that when holding it up to a bright light, the light can be seen through it. Blowing on a gold leaf will disturb it, and touching it with a finger will destroy it. Because of its thinness, a sheet of gold leaf rubbed between your hands will virtually disappear, leaving only a slight sheen.
